McLaren - Prices released!

I wish I was in a position to go out and spend £200k on a fun car. I would have an awful lot of enjoyment choosing between the 458 and the McLaren. To my eye the 458 is the better looking car and carries far more emotion but clearly the McLaren is the faster.

I think the McLaren team should be congratulated for building a fantastic sports car that delivers on so many fronts but it is a bit cold and clinical just like McLaren. However I think the Chris Harris review is very good and makes you think about the issues. Where is all of this going and how much faster can the cars get because I cant use the performance I already have when on the road. In a few years am I just going to be a controller of electronic devices that pilot the car for me? If its a second car I want it to make me feel good every time I get into it and I want it to be great fun to drive. If its the only car then it has to handle the inevitable compromises involved in commuting etc.

However I look at this it makes my GT 3 look like great value for money as its half the price of the McLaren but the McLaren is not twice as fast or twice as much fun. The premium you have to pay for that extra performance is considerable. If money was no object I would want to spend it on the extra performance and I would agonise over the decision on where to spend it but reality stops me from having to deal with that difficult choice. If I could afford the McLaren/458 would I just want the Zonda?

I think if they'd made the McLaren look more like a Zonda then it would be a much closer contest.

Pagani are really the only recent manufacturer to jump straight into the supercar arena and give Ferrari and Lamborghini a run for their money on the wow factor.  A Zonda would be my ultimate car for sure but for the total impracticality of getting it down UK b-roads, where the majority of my weekend fun is had.

This is where Porsche 911s shine - they are perfectly sized for b-road fun (although the 991 is supposed to be getting bigger) and have the premium badge to be in the same stratosphere as Ferrari and Lamborghini.  The McLaren is a bit too Noble/Nissan GT-R/Honda NSX for me.

I'm sure exclusivity comes into the equation with owners of cars in this rarefied atmosphere.

What's the feeling on motors like the Ascari and Gumpert then?

Regards,

Clive

I agree with Alex - and both could go under at any time.
My money would be saved for a Carrera GT then either a Zonda or retro with an F40/F50.

Well, my vote would be a McLaren F1 - at least it's not left hand drive!

At £25k for a 6000 mile service - I think not! [&:]

Ferrari F40/599 GTO/Enzo at least offset the costs by their appreciation in value... Zondas hold their value well too I believe.

Good point well made Clive!

Only caveat however is we all know how you (very rightly) like to put a lot of miles on your fun cars. So if you bought an F1 now and ran it for a few years, I don't think you would make a profit :)

599 GTO? That's a marketing joke! I wouldn't hold much hope for that to appreciate.

Now an an F1LM in Papaya orange? *wibble*

Word is Ron turned down a £5m offer for that one in his foyer and he has promised it to Lewis once he has won his third world championship. [;)]
