measurements sought

Hi Guys

A plea for info from any 951owners who may be currently working under their car. A while ago I mentioned that I was thinking on relocating my air filter's position to somewhere more accessible and with more room for a larger filter as the one that I have currently is too small. The place that I would like to fit it is behind the central lower intake under the number plate. I want to fit as large a filter possible behind the intake, it will most probably be a cone style filter which should give me the maximum intake area for this position. Now I can't get my own car on the ramps as my son is flat out with work so don't have the use of his garage to allow me to take proper measurements of this area which I suspect is pretty large so I thought why not ask if any of you guys might be currently working underneath your own 951's and if so could you measure what area there is to play with. The largest K&N cone that I've seen is 8" at it's widest and 6" long so this is the type of area that I need, if I can find a bigger filter I'd probably go with it if there's enough room....the filter will be connected by a metre long length of 3"ID flexible hose which should reach easily enough.

over to you chaps..:)

Pete

I've heard of people cutting the headlamp bracket off to enable mounting a larger filter there, combine that with a cone filter with an open end positioned close to the opening in the wing, and I think you'd have enough air intake. Big air filters mounted in front of the radiator are a bit too 'Ricer' for my liking.

if you recall Paul my air filter is outside of the engine bay in the wing but difficult to get too or see how dirty it is....I want to keep it outside in the cooler air but move it to the front of the engine directly behind the lower central intake... you can buy flexible intake hose designed for this in various lengths with solid alloy ends.. a meter will be fine and it won't look like a ricer as you won't be able to see the filter or hose or at least you'd have to know it's there to spot it...the filter that I currently have is fairly large but clearly not able to deal with the induction forces involved at full bore, remember last time I took a look the filter had been more or less halfway sucked into itself.....I need a bigger filter, much bigger..:)

Pete

I don't remember your setup Pete, are the pictures lost now. I thought it was some sort of induction kit that collapsed ? Going back to the cone filter behind the headlamp, I've seen flexi hose taken from the bumper to a hole cut underneath where it would sit.

hmmm.. well I've been having fun...not... over the last few minutes trying to first download my lost image from photobucket and second embed it in this post...failed miserably and I suspect photobucket have added something to stop you moving images to other hosts...I've done it before with no problem but now can't get the image to work on Imgur...the link seems to work though?... Anyway this is my current setup....this filter which is fairly large was sucked in to half it's size last time I took it off to clean. I have tried to resist going full bore as I could feel the engine pulling back a little which I thought was either because it wasn't yet tuned for the new mods or it needed the larger injectors that I still haven't fitted. However I'm now thinking it's purely down to the engine being starved of air?...in all other respects the engine runs great, it doesn't need full bore to be lightning fast and so I was happy to wait until I fitted larger injectors and re-tune. Now I'm convinced that it's as simple as requiring a larger filter and why I want to test my theory and fit as big as possible and in a better position to monitor it's state.

Paul I did have an issue with a viper venom ram air intake system where the bonded filter was sucked out of the housing and into the engine, again, clearly such a system was not capable of dealing with the amount of induction present, I did later discover that mine wasn't the only car to suffer a failure from the venom system. This happened some years ago and a long time before the engine was stripped for it's rebuild, I knew the car was down on power, I just didn't know why...result was destroyed intercooler, turbo and engine internals...such is the life of a highly modified car enthusiast...:)

Maybe look at some way of reinforcing the inside of the filter to stop it collapsing Pete ?

Hi Pete, i will Be doing a similar thing as in I want and will be making myself a custom air cone of some sort but I’d like it in its own department sucking the air from the duct in the wing and I was and am also going to hook up pipes from the lower intake vents your talking about under the numberplate and I’m going to have two forced sources of air, but I have Not yet decided on where ? or how large I will make the cone? What I do know is I think I will make the material from a k&n standard shape air filter insert which I have as I ran one of this for a minute time until doing some of the larger mods where I needed to change to a cone filter. I will most definitely make it solid metal construction abd intend to make it indistructable as not to have what happened to you happen.

This wont be till the summer though, engine needs rebuilding first and putting into the car again.

i can’t get the picture link to work, will try again later.

look forward to seeing what you come up with and any felt improvement??

Don't think that would help Paul..first off it wouldn't be addressing the problem of too small an area for the air to get in, second, even if possible it would further reduce said air intake...a nice new bigger than big seems to fit the bill...more so when you realise that IIRC none of the normal range of K&N filters or other makes for that matter are rated beyond 350bhp which is one reason why I've been looking at race car filters too... of course 'cost' is an issue for me these days so we'll see what I end up with...just fitting something larger will be a step in the right direction.

Pete

Hi Daniel.. sounds like a plan sir... I can't remember which part of the country you are in but if you need any help during the rebuild and if not too far away I'd be more than happy to pop over for a few hours to lend a hand....

cheers

Pete

Thanks Pete, that’s very kind of you.

Im sure at some point I may have a few quiries on the IASA piston rings and few bits like that ?? I’m up in Hertfordshire near to Enfield /harlow Essex ect , don’t know if you know those areas? I’m in nazieng which isn’t far from iether if those two, most people seem to know of them better than saying nazieng as they are sighned on the m25 and not far from me.

If if you don’t find one to buy, why don’t you make one like me.

I actually have a huge stainless big big air cone that i used to have in my 944 non turbo ( bit that had the room whereas the turbo doesnt unless we go to drastic measures as it seems we are going to.

personally I liked the idea of using 1 or 2 or even 3? of the k&n flat filter as it would be ideal as it could be washed , i have even thought of not making a perfect cone shape if it comes down to the space where I end up wanting to put it , I may even make it box/cone shape if you get what I mean just to fit where I choose to put it. Iether way it will be base on 3 factors

*as large as I can make it withought interfearing with anything else and getting a solid fixing braket ect

*it must be made to allow x2 forced ducting from the arch and also the lower air duct you are talking about, so the shape may end up based around these to get the complete flat of the duct pipe to touch the filter flush and not escape into the engine compartment but in hope to get most air sucked into the filter.

*it has to be assesable to remove and clean/oil ect

I have also thought of totally boxing in in as to try and keep the heat away whilst driving around town to hopefully get some cooler air whilst not gunning it on acceleration butsts or on motorways? This is another subject I’m sure but something I need to try to satisfy my itch. ??

Sounds like you've been giving it plenty of thought....I have a simple reason for not making one myself....I have a steam engine to finish which is at least ten years from completion...no time sir...the locomotive is my first priority these days.....:)

Best of luck to you Dan, but with normally aspirated road bike engines making 200 bhp per litre, drawing air through a small panel filter, you may be over thinking this. Porsche figured it out years ago with the 968 RS.

Hi blade,

i hear what your saying too! Probably overkill, but I’d like to try it so that when I finally get the car set up by the wizard maybe I can pay for a few runs and try both normal and my custom set up although this won’t really work out as on the road the forced air will be different than a fan blowing on the engine than at speed of course.

If it wont hurt my engine and I have it in my head, the problem with me is I always do the crazy ideas I have in my head if I think there’s a good pissability it could make a difference which I think it could with all my new mods, but understand what you are saying.

My cars are approaching the 400 or already over after I rebuild so I think it could possibly do it good rather than a waste of time hopefully anyway!

I had the same issue PSH, could not download my library from photobucket

i found a Linux pearl script which downloaded every image well over 1000

then I uploaded them to amazon free S3 storage, you can link to your pictures there and then use the img tool to show then on here

you get 5GB free storage with amazon

do you buy chance have a 'link'...I had been replacing images in some of my online build threads by right clicking the broken image and opening in another tab. then I could see the image, find it again and replace it with the image from another host.....this of course took time and I only got about 30% of the images done this way...now that I can't open the image to see it anymore I can't replace it....damn photobucket...must be the most hated online service ever....lol

Going back to the original topic, I think you're going to have to remove the front bumper Pete. All will be revealed then [:)].

nah... I reckon that on ramps with under tray and batwing removed I could fit the new air filter pretty quickly, I just need to know how much room is there so I can buy the biggest filter possible ready to fit...:)

Ramps, on your drive? Stuff that this time of year :(. I've got a couple of pics from Rennlist where someone went straight down behind the headlamp, into the bumper area where the brake ducts are.....

nope not on the drive...just need my son to have time for me to get the car on his ramps at work...I can't do this just to take a look though hence why I need to know what space is available so I can get a filter ready for when he's free...
