Mesh Grilles 996

Hi All,

I know this topic is well documented but ALL posts, pics & DIY procedures appear to be on 997 models.

Has anyone with 996 C4S or Turbo tried to install mesh grilles?

These models do have a rather different design on the air intakes on front PU compared to 997's...

Image attached.

Many thanks,

Paul

There's a C4S DIY from a chap on RennTech here: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?/topic/15145-mesh-screen-for-front-bumper-grilles/page__view__findpost__p__75432

I have mesh fitted to my Turbo. Get some Halfrauds black (or aluminium if you're feeling bling) mesh, cut it to size with tin snips and bond it to the back of the PU. Simples (or was when I got my specialist to do it).

A chap a few houses down from me has a newish Boxster and I saw recently he had installed some of that plastic honeycomb grill - thye type you get on the new Golf GTi or Leon Cupra R. Obviously it was a proper produce as it is not the sort of stuff you can buy and cut to suit and they looked really good, as if they were supposed to be there.

A Region 10 friend installed Halfords black competition mesh grilles on my 986 for me. Took about three hours I think, but he has a lift which helped significantly. Parts are dirt-cheap and its well worth doing if you have the confidence (or a friend!) to do it.

Mine has the Aluminium mesh fitted & you'd be surprised how mush muck & leaves are stuck to it after a run in the country roads,
well worth fitting.

Thanks ALL for your views, I may purchase 2 new grilles then play around with them to see what's best & securing options.....

So want to get them done as it appears an accident just waiting to happen!

See you at Modern Event perhaps.....

Hi Folks

I'm looking to put the grills inside the front PU on my Turbo. Decisions, decisions - which to buy - there are several choices. Halfords talk about a black "stretch" diamond mesh and Demon Tweeks don't say much about their mesh at all. Any specific recommendation would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Chris

For info, this in the 997 section

http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=613041

I paid an arm and a leg for some grilles that were (supposedly) shaped for mine from Design 911 but wish I had just bought a sheet or two of black diamond mesh and shaped it myself!

Definitely worth doing though

Before you remove your bumper make sure you note the gaps between the litronics and the bumper. I spent hours trying to close those gaps, not realising that they were originally there! Good luck!

Thanks for the replies, folks. Which is the best mesh to buy - the Halfords stuff or should I look to Demon Tweeks or perhaps someone else?

Cheers
Chris

I used the Ripspeed Competition Mesh (in black) from Halfords. You can't quite get the 3 pieces from one sheet, so you have to buy 2 at about £25 a sheet.

Hi there, Richard

Many thanks. Have just reserved two sheets at our local Halfords store and will pick 'em up this evening. Black diamond - I guess you went for the silver?

I'm going to get Northway Porsche to fit it for me when I have the car serviced next week. They reckon it's around a three hour job, so not going to be cheap! <groan> Wish I could do these things myself!

Cheers
Chris

Hi, Just fitted mine on 996 C2 and looks the business. Had to replace one of the radiators after being hit by stone so had to be done soon anyway. Bought 1 x sheet of black mesh from Halfords (£22) and, with my son. took a couple of hours to remove bumper and fit. 1 sheet is just big enough (cut into 3 pieces) and installed it using self-tappers on the raised part of the bumper so they didn't come through the other side. Can't send photos as not yet up on complicated things like that but when I find out how, will post on here. While bumper was off the car, I noticed many stone chips so will have to get resprayed when can afford it. Also this was a good time to clean all of the bodywork inside the bumper. Cheers, John

Has anyone got pictures of what this looks like? With mesh I mean. I can't imagine it?!
Picture of mine - 997 I know but the effect is the same!

Thanks very much to the chap that pm'd me with links to pic of this. Kept meaning to email back and forgetting, very rude [&o]

Not sure whether its a visual improvement but done nicely like on your cars it's certainly not offensive and well worth it to stop the radiators getting clogged with leaves/smashed by stones.

Thanks all. Hopefully now my car wont sell so I can keep it and do it [;)]
