Modern Fuse Relay Board Replacement

Hi ive had a few issues lately with the fuses in my 1984 944 Lux, like tail light's flickering, window's stop working and electric mirror's etc not working and my mechanic say's it's to do with the old style fuse's getting too hot and has suggested I look for a modern type fuse box replacement if there's such a thing.
He say's there available for other German 80's car's like the VW Scirroco, BMW E30's etc has anyone ever done or know of such a thing for the 944.
Another question is can a later model 944 fuse board 1986-92 [FONT=arial"]Part No. 944 610 110 00[FONT=verdana,geneva"] be used to replace the early model board.

Hi Ferg,
I think trying to update to the later fuse board you mention would be a lot of work - it's a big lump and its designed to fit where your battery tray is, you'd have to move the battery to the boot like in the later cars, and then trying to map all the circuits to the loom plug connectors under the new board would be a nightmare. Maybe the VW route would be easier, or just search the internet for "vehicle fuse board" - there are generic blade fuse items available with different numbers of fuseways.

Thank's for the reply I never knew that they were so different the two fuse boards, id be interested in a modern up date of the board or perhap's a good auto electrician can take a look at mine and sort it out.
The mechanic I use suggested to up date the board like a VW Scirroco, BMW E30.

Hi Fer, I’ve been around these cars and worked on them for almost 10 years and have never heard of this. The fuse board itself is a pretty rudimentary item and just serves as termination points for the wiring.

Rather than change the fuse board for - I’m not sure what as I don’t believe a viable alternative exists - it sounds like a 12v feed issue or a grounding issue given it’s having an effect on different fused circuits, so I’d look at those areas first.

But a modern style fuse board could be fitted where the existing one was, it would just need the same or more number of fuse ways. Having said that though fuse boards are pretty simple so if the connections are clean (contact cleaner and fiberglass brush) and suitably springy there shouldn't be any issues. The contact area is possibly bigger on a blade fuse than the plastic 'bullet fuses'

Thank's guy's I'll keep in mind your good idea's and get it checked out by an auto electrician, I don't personally think the board need's replacing as it look's in good shape to me but yes possibly does need a clean up ( it is 35 year's old after all).

I'll take a better look at it over the weekend.
