MOT Fail (CO emissions and handbrake)

Pete,

It did pass on emissions (>cough<). It failed on the handbrake, which I re-built and it later passed.

I'm doing something about the emissions because I feel slightly duty-bound to do so! (And I'd rather it was running as it should.)

Update: I've changed the Fuel Pressure Regulator (replacements seem to be both expensive and hard to get hold of.) This, combined with the new coolant temperature sensor and re-aligning the wiper on the AFM, should have solved the emissions problem. I'll take it back to the MOT place and have the emissions checked when I have time.

I've also removed, cleaned and re-fitted the cam cover (sprayed it black at the same time.) I put a thin bead of silicone along the underneath of the rubber seal to try and make sure any oil leak there will be stopped. I'm not confident that that will cure the problem (it used about 300ml of oil in the last 200 miles - far too much) but it seems like a reasonable place to start, given the oil traces on the side of the head and block.

I'll keep this thread updated with results as I drive it more ... thanks for your input.

Dave,

Yes, it has the Promax S2 chip in it. But I put that in 3 or 4 years ago, and it has passed MOT's with it before.

Why do you ask?

OK, update on this; I've just taken it back to the MOT place and they have re-checked the emissions, and it's as it should be. CO at idle is just under 3.0. So, although it passed a while ago, it's now running as it should be.

As a point of reference, I put some redex injector cleaner in the fuel tank, adjusted the wiper position in the AFM and changed the fuel pressure regulator. Oh, and I changed the coolant temperature sensor as well. I don't know what made the difference, but I am glad that one of them did.

So, all is well. Thanks for your input chaps.
