Straight through the MOT again [:D]

Not bad for 156664 miles, and quite handy given that the last one ran out on the 2nd Nov [:)]

- and the garage know the guy who's bought Leda - could be a very useful contact come re-build time.
 
Excellent a brilliant feeling when your car passes an MOT, I sometiems get nervous thinking what did I miss out when checking the car to make sure it'll pass and if I did will it be expensive and so on.
 
edh, I have seen 4 successive passes on my car - most recently at 133k miles. Its a great feeling for sure.
I would be conscious the testers are intrigued by our old motors which are so well engineered. I always ask is there anything I should look out for before next year, and (apart from rear tyres perhaps), nothing[:)].

It's a good feeling. I remember the first time I took my S2 in for an MOT ... went to the usual place that I have been to for many years with a series of VW golfs, and spoke with the usual guy - a surly old Turk who usually only ever grunts. He is the owner, so I guess I can excuse this on the 'His gaffe his rules' basis ...

However, this time he met me like a long-lost brother, shook my hand, asked me whether I wanted a cup of tea (I declined - you should see the cups there) and pulled up a chair for me to sit on while he did the test. It turned out that he owned a 951 many years ago, and deeply regretted selling it, and was delighted to get the opportunity to look at another one! I offered him a drive (once it had passed, natch!), and he declined - but with regret in his voice, and only after having looked at the long list of other things he had to do that day ...

Funny you should say that....

I've taken my Turbo S to the same place two years on the trot. On both occasions the very friendly asian chap has been very interested in the car and impressed with the care I've given to the car.

So much so that last time, he could actually have failed the car because it kept blowing light bulbs and fuses on the N/S light - I took it home with a pass, he with the reassurance I'd fix it = broken wire in the loom to the pop up light = common fault on all old 944's & 924's

Currently the Road Tax system is based on CO2 emissions as determined by the manufacturer, not on real life actual emissions as determined by a tester. In this week's budget there was no mention of changing the system beyond expanding the number of catagories but still using the same manufacturer established emission figures.

Cars registered before the March 2001 introduction are still rated on engine capacity, not emissions - so you're still stuck with the catch-all "over 1549cc" band which is now £185 since last Wednesday.

Congratulations of the MOT pass.

However, has your car been 'de-catted' as the CO emissions, although within the 3.5% limit, are very high for a 944 with a Cat. Mine are always a fraction of a percent,the MOT in February was 0.002% and last year, literally 0.000%. HCs were 8 and 12 repsectively.

Can anyone advise whether the ECU and Lamba sensor will automatically adjust the mixture if I de-cat the car or will it need to be reprogrammed.

That certainly explains the higher CO reading which, in the circumstances, is perfectly OK.

I have been wondering about removing the Cat to try to achieve a slightly more sporty exhaust sound such as I used to enjoy with my old Lux. Sad, I know, but when I hear Beaky's, or Wuf's, exhaust I get very jealous!

Grahams Cabrio had the cat removed and it does make the tone slightly fruitier.

You will not need to alter anything else. The ECU adjusts the mixture at idle to protect the cat from an over rich mixture. It will still do the same without the cat

Oil is the bane of my life at the moment, having spent the thick end of £500 to get one leak sorted, I have found that it masked another leak....

I keep getting clouds of oil smoke from a leak dripping into my exhaust, I found it coming from my cam cover so had the gasket changed when it was in for it's MoT/Service, of course it is not advisable to re-tension an existing cam belt, so having had it done last year, I opted to have a new one, and oh, would sir like a new water pump whilst we are at it?

Got the car back and whilst the rate of smoke is much reduced, I know think I have a leak from my head gasket...which could be an altogether much more expensive caper to fix....

I have to balance the cost of having it done against the risk of my head gasket getting worse and affecting the water/oil mix (it won't get any better!), the embaressment/smell of smoke pouring from under the bonnet in traffic jams and the small cost of keeping the oil topped up.....

So another new cambelt will be fitted when the head gasket is done ?, not sure I understand why a recent cambelt can't be correctly re-tensioned. It's your money and up to you how you spend it but there does come a point when maybe a better car would cost less in the long run.

No, the new cambelt needs re-tensioning at 1500 miles, so I will have the work done co-incident with that

Makes sense, wasn't a dig at you just wondering what TWG had advised, as for the better car comment that's just my opinion, if a car has a succesion of issues I lose all enthusiasm for it and usually change it.
 
The difference in cost between having the original cambelt taken off and put back on to change my cam-cover gasket versus having a new one put on was only about £80-100, the Water pump was an extra £200.

I can't sell it in it's current condition, I need to get this issue and a murmuring bearing done...at that point it will be a fantastic car and I will want to keep it!!

One of the previous owners, about 5 years ago, had a succession of 4 bills each between £2000-2800, so I think that less than half the car is 22 years old....
