Great News Stu.. You have another year of motoring in VJ one of the iconic 944's on this forum ![;)]

Loved seeing Paul's face as you whizzed by at Stowe... Us telling him he should never have sold her [:D]

Just got a fill of home heating oil ... about €500 ... I was whinging..
I replaced the belts myself in August at about €500 ... Once I drove the car all was forgiven !

 
Mine was perfect on Monday evening over a 40-mile trip. Tuesday morning dead as a dodo, not the slightest glimmer of power. With it getting dark early and now snowing I haven't even looked for a problem yet; it's not the glovebox light as that's now disconnected! [&:]
 
Mine's having an MOT today. As it has only moved around the workshop at Daytona Coachworks since May, and has had all the interior in and out since then, I am keeping my fingers crossed that everything still works... we all know they do not like being 'hangar queens'.

 
Rule out the battery first Paul. Theres a test to see if the battery itself will hold the charge. If teh battery is in good nick then one of these is a great job for finding issues like this one..! If you can lend one even better !

Bonnet open - Key out - Doors closed - Fusebox open

Start at fuse 1 and move along fuse by fuse until you find the circuit that has the current drain. Lets just say its circuit 11 thats the interior light, cigar lighter and clock.. Scout around them to see if sommits left on.. boot light is a prime suspect.. Circuit 12 points to the alarm system.. 36 or 39 means the radio ... Just keep hunting like this.

Be methodical ..Gather the evidence Never assume .. As said before if you assume you make an ass of u and me....!

Melv, a lot of these cars are used day in & day out in all weathers and some have intergallatic mileage, unlike some RS cars that only see summer track days [;)]

It's the feeling that you might be about to find out your pride and joy has thrown you a bill you can't afford, and the MOT could often cost more than the value of the car. [&o]

I guess it's one of the wonders of the Porsche Club that we have members like myself who could be forced to scrap a car over a a grand of unexpected bills, yet others spend that much valeting a car worth hundreds of times what our cars are worth. It's the Club's greatest strength IMO, we all respect and love the cars from a rusty 924 up to the Carrera GT.

Of course, there's also the satisfaction that a 944 worth £1500 is arguably more fun on UK roads than any other Porsche, given the traffic and speed restrictions that limit the way you can exploit the car's abilities. And they're obviously more economical to run, by a very large margin, than any 959, 997 GT3 RS, Spyder, 356 etc.

Even on track, a mildly tuned turbo will keep most modern cars at bay. A seriously tuned turbo is easily a match for modern GT3s except on top speed, at a cost of probably £20K. As a race car it's a perfect starting point, ask Mark Koeberle how his first season went!

The 944. Clarkeson loves it and so do I. Despite mine being a dead lump of metal that won't start it still looks great out there in the snow! [&:]

Re: emissions, normally if that is all the fail is, they will give it a couple of minutes at high revs and then re test for you.
 
I always set off for an MOT 45 mins early and give the car an "Italian tune-up" taking the scenic route to the garage, never had an emissions problem yet (touch wood).
 
AS has been said, hot engines produce much lower emissions than cold ones. If it was cold and your tester realised this was why it was high then he was decent enough to warm it up and re-test. (Which is kind of him - some would just fail it.)

Was decent of him for sure. It was done at the place (Tanvic in Corby) we use for our work fleet. Only £30 too which is even better! [:)] (Special work rate)
 
It's fitted with Pirelli 'ditch-finders' so he wouldn't have worn the tyres out - they're just too hard! [:D]
