Motorsound Airbox

I am sure this has been discussed before here, but against "dont waste your money" advice I shelled out 60 odd quid on one of these and am amazed how good it sounds. I know you can just drill your own but what other genuine P part can you fit yourself and makes an audible difference. From 4k it makes a great sound and even from 2k in 4th is the audio is "enhanced" and I know it is all in my mind but the car seems to pull better from low revs as well. Maybe I dont need those RSR after all (joking!). My car is a 1995 Pre-Varioram, stock exhaust.

Alan - you too [:D]

Fitted one of these a fortnight ago, £67. Cannot believe the difference, and has the benefit of being unnoticeable at pottering speeds but when you open the tap, the sound is just fantastic. I am also in a Pre-varioram on standard exhaust, and no wish to upgrade now!

I also have the above ftted. I agree with the comments on the great sound, it almost makes a supercharged whistle near the top end !!

Easiest mod you could ever wish to make David. A couple of clips and the cover lifts off and you can then put the new one on. The motorsound box come with the rear section of the filter housing as well but that's just the same as the one that's on just now, so no need to replace.

I've never actually heard one on a car and always been a bit suspicious of how it could make any improvement in sound but I think I'm going to have try it for myself. [8|]

I Have heard one where the airbox has been drilled that certainly sounded different to mine. Do these come with instructions?? Anyone got the link so I can order one for my 1995 c4? Tks

It is easy enough to drill out your own but this has a nice chrome effect intake [:)]. Available from your OPC or any Porsche parts supplier. Mine was £65inc. postage.

I think the general view is that you won't get any power increase but the engine will sound better. As long as you're buying it only for the audio effect and don't expect a power increase then you're not likely to be disappointed.

Kind regards
Anton

thats fine but is there a chanve i will unsettle things by switching to the motorsport one even for the sound improvement?

The "˜Motorsound' option (fitted from new on my car, which included the large oval chromed exhaust tips - with standard exhaust boxes) does just what it says - i.e. improves the sound, but I doubt if it gives any more power. The airbox simply has the additional drilled holes and the chrome intake to distinguish it from the standard one. Uses a standard dry air filter, as far as I know. Sounds better than standard, though[:D].

Since you're just changing the airbox I'd be very surprised if you 'unsettled' anything. I've never heard of that happening but perhaps others who have it fitted could put your mind at rest.

Kind regards

No, David, I'd say it was better to spend your money on something else. The standard induction system will flow plenty enough air .. the box is an audio accessory.

Oiled filter elements can also give rise to problems unless scrupulously maintained.

cheers, Maurice [:D]

Am i reading too much into Maurices comments as per above then/

I think Maurice's comments were in respect of the claims of better throttle response and power increases David. All the motorsound airbox does is let you hear the the air going into the engine better via the additional holes. There's a muckle opening in the standard housing and Maurice means that there is more than enough air getting in there for combustion purposes.

It certainly shouldn't upset the engine management or anything else.

In conclusion, fit the Motorsound airbox if all you want is a bit of extra noise, put the sixty odd quid to a re-chip or some other proven power mod if you want extra power.
