Motorsound Airbox

Maurice is right, stear clear of any air filter that u need to oil.the problem is small amounts of that oil u put on the filter get sucked tru the air flow meter, and tiny amounts collect on the platinum wire, which is what mesures the air flow into the engine and controls fueling etc.so you might get a small power increase when u first fit it (which is why some of the power graphs from the filter manufacturers are able to show a power increase over the stock Porsche air filter) after a few weeks the oil build up on the platnum will give a incorrect to the fuel computer and u will end up losing power.i have seen a couple of cars fail the mot on emissions because they have been running oiled type filters, cheers

Ok many tks for this. I'm assuming that the motorsound airbox doesn't require oiling so I can go ahead and fit with no concerns,

Thanks for the above enlightenment, I must admit I had been tempted to buy one of those oily jobbies before now.

It uses the standard filter element so no oiling and no problems. You can fit with no concerns. It's a cheap and simple mod that makes the engine sound better with no difference in power. It was available as an optional extra from the factory when the 993 was new.

The "˜Motorsound' option (fitted from new on my car, which included the large oval chromed exhaust tips - with standard exhaust boxes)

True for the RoW cars.
For the '96- US cars however, the "Motorsound" option included the air filter cover, slightly louder mufflers and chromed squarisch exhaust tips. The big ovals were again optional.

Hence the confusion for some.

I advertised in the wanted section on here for a standard cover, bought it from a fellow owner for about £10 I think. Then copied the hole drilling as per the photograph. Still got my original one if I want to put it back on ! Only thing you don't get is the chrome intake.

I concur with Maurice, no power increase just louder induction noise.

Reference the K&N type filter, my car had one fitted when I bought it but took it out and replaced with a standard OPC supplied unit. My understanding is that small globules of oil from the filter can be drawn from it in the intake air, this can play havoc with the Mass Air Flow Sensor which is just upstream of it. These are not cheap so I didn't take any chances.

Fitted a motorsound airbox at the weekend and it sounds brilliant. As said, no power increase but the sound track is much improved.

Love the growl from 4000 to 5500 rpm!
