moving from 993 to 944T ?

hi all - new on this forum ...

i am considering selling my 993 C2 to free up some cash, but still want a daily usable Porsche - ive come up with a 944 turbo as option - anyone any views on moving from a 993 to 944T ? they dont look far different in terms of performance on paper ...

I would see if you can talk to Nick as he has experience with both. He'll probably be along at some stage on this one. Having been in his 993 I actually really liked it and would love to get a nice example one of these days but they look like they fetch a lot of money nowdays and are getting rarer by the looks of them.

you're right - I don't think the 944 is all that much faster - until you up the boost a bit [:D]

Sorry, couldn't resist that [;)] - I don't have anything constructive to add - although I think you'll find the Porsche DNA is still strongly evident in the front engined cars.

944T?

What about a nice S2? Much better machines.

<Blast! Failed again!>

Oli.

P.S. I don't know anything about 993's, apart from the fact that they look prettier than Lucy Liu in her underwear and therefore I love them. I don't know much about 944 Turbos - commonly called 951's, either. I'm sure someone who can genuinely help will be along soon ...

yes i love my 993 - it looks and drives superbly, but then then 944 turbo on the surface looks such good value for money at the moment ...

Gordon Attar has both a 944T and a 993T so he would be good to ask. I'm sure he will be along or you could PM him from his profile.

Having loved my 964 of a few years ago and now playing with my 944t, I would say that the main thing I miss from the 964 is the engine[8|]

Mine had a cup pipe on it and sounded glorious as you wound the revs up.

That flat six engine also had grunt (technical term[:D]) from low down in the rev range, whereas the 944T is pretty lethargic off boost, or perhaps feels it as the transition to full boost is so dramatic.

Would love a 993 at some point, but not until I have enough pennies to spec it and upgrade it as i would want it

Just my thoughts...[:D]

you're absolutely right Nick - the noise is very disappointing (and the one thing I'd change) - Not only is the noise very ordinary, there's also not much of it. My car measured a pathetic 85dB on the noise meter at Oulton recently

Straight 6 would have been the way to go IMHO - or maybe a V10 (the Carrera GT sounds fantastic when it's wound up [:D] )

Having only driven a 993 (Targa) vs owning an S2, I was going to mention the noise too.... 993's sound gorgeous whereas the 4-pot in the '44 is pretty uninspiring aurally.

944s dont have the stupidly offset pedals, so you'll spend the first while pressing the brake instead of the clutch [:)]

944 more "chuckable" with a naturally better balance, and whilst it doesn't have 911 levels of traction it's pretty good for a rwd 50/50 weight distribution.

its tricky - i have a feeling id miss mine if traded to 944 - youre right about the sound - mine has the factory motorsound option (different air box and rear pipes) - it does sound superb ! guess i nedd to get a test drive in a 944 ...

The 944 engine is not inspiring, and you don't really buy a 944 for the engine, or so the usual saying goes.

All the best with your decision. If you happen to find yourself in East London and fancy looking at a 944 (S2 admittedly, not a Turbo) then drop me a line and I'll happily show you 'round mine.

I'll be the voice of dissent ...
I haven't owned a 911 but have driven quite a few in various states of exhaust tunes and I definitely prefer the ushed sound of the "vulgar" 4 banger. Whenever I hear a flat six and regardless of its age, it always sounds like at least one cylinder is missing. IMO it sounds just plain wrong, whether it's a 997 idling or a 914/6 storming down the Mulsanne straight.

I've a 944Turbo cabriolet and a 993 4S
both are great cars but very different
performance on paper not dissimilar but you need to work the 944 much more to keep it in its power band and the turbo spinning. the 911 you can be much lazier with as it has tons of torque and doesnt care too much what gear its in. Its ultimately I think more demanding to drive very fast but the limits on both are very high.
north of 120 mph the 911 feels to me much more solid but I can't say thats an issue very often!
The really neutral balance/handling on 944 is great and I actually like the noise it makes. you will surprise any number of modern 911 or boxster pilots who think they will leave you for dead when they find that is not that easy.
I think a 944 Turbo is fabulous value for money if you can get a good one. Overall money no object I'd takethe 911 but value for money right now a 944T is very attractive

You have to also consider that 15 - 20yrs on 944 turbos and S2's are showing signs of rust along the sill and bottom of the wings. They corrode from the inside out so you can check all you like externally when looking at a car but you wont really know what the true condition is under the skin. My car is a daily driver and the bodywork looks as fresh as it did the day it rolled off the production line - especially since it had a full all-over machine polish to restore it from Guards Pink to Guards Red - however i'm into my 5th year of daily driving and my car is now showing signs of rust along the passenger sill. I don't like the idea of getting the affected areas patched up so am now considering a full respray and two new wings and sills - probably starring down the barrel of £4k. So if you factor this into the cost of the car a 944T is not such a bargain - still alot of performance car for relatively little money, but not quite the deal you thought you were going to get.

I don't want to put you off, but you need to go into this with your eyes open. The only 993 i'd trade my car in for is either a TT (just love the boost) or one that has been breathed on by 9M with those billet cylinder heads.

Other than that the car has been 100% reliable, has cost me relatively little money to run (mods asside), goes like absolute stink, is lushious to drive and though the engine note is not quite as spine tingly as a 993's, I actually don't think it is that bad - it's a very smooth 4 cylinder purr with nice transmission whine - I find it quite inspiring.

thanks for all the good feedback from all ...Im still undecided at present, and if money were no object I would certainly stick with the car ..we will see !

Mike, anyone who ever had a 911 will lament its passing, but a good 944 turbo is a better car. (You just need to make a few tweeks to the chip and boost control)

The 944 Turbo is a seriously addictive car, so add at least 30% to your purchase budget for "improvements & maintenance", more if you decide to chase a genuine 300bhp. Oh, and don't forget about the.... laaaaaaggg [:D]

I haven't driven a 993 but a friend has a 996 (3.4 C2) and my 944 pulls away from him quite cleanly when on boost (of course he p*&ses off into the distance whilst I wait for the boost to arrive [8|] ). Handling wise, well one is 6 years old and the other nearly 20 and things have moved on. Having said that, the 944 is well balanced if a bot rolley through the bends - which can be cured by liberally applying more cash [;)] (the KW V3 fund is not looking too healthy at the moment [&o])

951's don't have to have lag or at least you can shorten that. Having said that, I like a bit of lag actually. Makes me know I'm in a turbo car. As for the on-off switch syndrome, I think that's way over exaggerated. The noise of the 4 banger can also be improved out of sight...or sound should I say.
From what I see the 993's fetch over $20k in the UK (sorry no pounds sign) so buy a nice 944t for 5k and spend another 5k on it and you've got 12k in your pocket and a rocket in the garage.
Oh, and don't listen to Oli. S2's are nice in isolation but aren't in the same league when compared back to back with the 951. [8D]

Naah thaat's foitin' talk, meestah!

I would agree the S2 is not as fast as the 250hp 944 turbo, but there is not much in it between an earlier 220turbo and an S2, only 9bhp and the S2 does not have turbo lag.
