Moving to the 964 from a Supra TT?

For £17k you will get a wide choice of 964's 95%+ of market and gives yourself £2k for the contingency fund.

Theres plenty of LHD 3.3 Turbo's out there for c£19k from 60k miles, if your okay with LHD, I've not had any real problems swopping over.

Cheers Gordon.. yes, I've since been looking at the 964 3.3 Turbo... it seems as if good rhd models start in the mid 20's. Gmund currently have 3 in (including one lhd at the exact price you mentioned):

There was a private 964 rhd turbo selling for £26k with only 38k miles in the 911 World classifieds, too - so it looks as though 25-26k would get one.

At the moment I'm weighing up whether I should go the extra mile or not; this will be the most expensive car I've ever bought, and to miss out on the ultimate example of the model for the sake of 4-5k when I'm already looking at up to £20k seems as though I would probably end up regretting it. It would definitely mean selling both the MR2 (anyone interested in only the third example of a 2l 3SGTE turbo conversion of a mk1 MR2 in the UK??? [;)]) and the Supra -probably netting close to £12.5k, a few grand saved up from now until september and then a loan of approx £10k-11k.... but it would be worth it to own the ultimate incarnation of the 911.

I guess I need to start looking at loan companies too; the best deal so far on loans of that amount has been through Directline, with an APR of 6.1% and £900 interest on loan of £10000 over 36 months - quite reasonable I thought (I only managed an apr of 6.8% and was charged £700 on a loan of £7k when I initally had the Supra imported).

Well spotted... nice looking car, decent miles and well priced. If I was after one right now I would definitely take a closer look at that. Just shows that the rhd models are out there and are reasonable.

I think you folks have probably sold me on a 3.3 Turbo 2....

Hi there Megatron, as a recent seller dont discount the 996 they are terrific value at present you can pick up an early car for £20k and thats not with high miles either, and it's probably nearer to the supra than the rest.
The 996 isn't without problems but a good car with history should be fine.

Good luck with your search

I've seen the white car at Finlay Gorham, and I must say that I thought it looked fantastic and very well cared for. I was in the process of looking for my next replacement car for the 964, but I was very tempted - even if it is white.

If you email me off line -I will send you a buyers guide (what to look out for) which has been compiled from a variety of smartgoup members opinions. However, I would regard a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) as necessary i.e. by a Porsche specialist with the relevant experience, not somebody that doesn't deal with Porsche.

Sincerely

Jeff

I'd be careful of naming and shaming any Porsche specialist especially when you haven't given any details of both sides of the argument. I've been on these forums as well as Titanic, Smartgroups and Rennlist for quite a while and have never heard a bad word about Autobahn. Without being too biased, it's where I bought mine and I consider my car to beone of the best in the country (it came with a warranty).

Sincerely
I

I'm sure that for every unsatisfied punter of Autobahn (or any dealer/specialist) you'll find several satisfied ones - hence why they are still in business. Buying any car from a dealer or specialist should mean a more carefree experience but unfortunately it invariably doesn't. I think you should approach all car sales the same irrespective of the seller i.e. do your own research, examine the car yourself or get your own independant examination of the car performed. Only then can you be as sure as possible that you are getting a decent car. The moment you start taking other peoples word for things is the moment things get out of your control. On this basis it is irrelevant who you buy your car from since you are satisfying yourself as to the condition of the car and not taking someone else's word for it. I also ignore salesmen and always ask to view the car without a salesperson looking over my shoulder. If a car needs selling I am immediately suspicious - if it's a good car it'll sell itself and a decent salesman will know that.

Anyway good luck with finding a decent car. Shopping around is half the fun so enjoy it!!

Well if you want that 'original wild Turbo feel' then the 964 was the last of the type and still looks very much like the original but better.
The mid twenties priced LHD 3.6T I would say due to its rarity will not depreciate and I was very seriously looking at one but a 'safer' 993TT fell in to my lap for just a little more.

What Slider said about the 964 turbo's power delivery is right. I have just bought one. (You can see my post in the turbo section).
However it is fine around town... as long as you are very light with your right foot!
Insurance can be pricey, but shop around, and make sure you have Cat 1 security. I got my insurance down from £1200 (ouch!) to £700.
