My 2008 hillclimb season in my Bitza

Good question!

1
PB's if there are no Championship results at stake.
This has been the whole motive this year after a relativly 'fun-less' season last year in the Championship (though good results)
You can let the aspirations of the others in the Class (to win win win) pass you by.

2
If you are after winning Class/Championship Class then there is every chance of a miserable time if those results do not turn up.

3
If you are an ace in an ace car then PB's = Class/Championship win.
Many dream of this, few (one?) achieve it.

Putting the past pressures of class wins aside this year, driving a car that is hopelessly out-classed (my Bitza) this year leaves just PB's and a good time because I am far more relaxed.
It has been a Good Thing, and a lesson learnt for me.
I am no driving Ace, and my cars are not Ace cars.

Driving the 911 yesterday around the sprint track was just simply great fun.
There were no Championship ponts, just a little Clubby event enjoyed by all.

I knew I had no chance against a Quattro Audi with 560 bhp, 4 x 4 and slicks weighing about the same as my taxed and MoT's road going 911, but I was still 'only' 2.2 seconds in a 35 sec run behind him......

His 64ft start times were about 1.9 secs (best traction of any car there)( 2.19 911)
Finish line top speeds were 108 mph (90 in the 911)

The hillclimb at Prescott was a real mixture, but the venue was ruined by the rain, grassy paddock and the clay under soil and it turned quickly into a bog.
Still, all was not lost, and on the first race run in the sodden morning I was pipped from FIRST IN CLASS by a pesky Morgan V8 and just 3/100ths of a second.
[]

As ever, the 911 balance of bhp (ie not many) the traction (ie a skip load of it) and great tyres (Kumho V70's) = a great time.[8D]
I love hillclimbing in the wet, always have in the 911. It is just so good a car in these conditions.[;)]

However.....the day dried rapidly and I ended up 5th in a class of 8, so not too bad for me, and some nice points. Beat both E Type Jaguar drivers, and by a good margin too not just a few 1/10ths. 4th place Morgan (another one) was only a few seconds away. They really are fast for such a crude design. Mind you, some say that about early 911's. Ha![:D]

Got drowned in a road flood of 12'' water driving home (the only road going car in my class), but slow-n-easy worked but the car got very very wet inside and the 3-2's ECU sits right on the floor...[&:]

Still ran on all six and without a sppllluttteutter of course!

I am so glad my Lola has one of these engines instead of a Pinto or a Rover V8.

Last hillclimb of 2008 this weekend at my very favorite of tracks, Loton Park (www.hdlcc.com).

Someone said a Tornado was arriving!
Should get a good time with such a tail wind.....................................[8|]

As ever, what a car it is.[:)] [:)] [:)]

Well, not quite the finish to my hillclimb season with the Bitza 911...
This weekend was to be the last hillclimb at my local/favorite hill, Loton Park.
Went to the track with some uncertainty, and needed to get back home asap on the saturday, so got dispensation to do my 2 practice runs one after the other pdq.

Threw the car up the twisty hill, it went like a scalded cat, and was great (as ever).
Didn't have the time to check the times.

Never got back to the track today due to my wife's mum passing away on saturday.
Sometimes Nature is very cruel how things are allowed to linger on, but she is at peace now.

So ends my 2008 season back with a fab car.

I cannot recall ever having so much fun at a hillclimb in the last decade, and the car has given just so much pleasure its un-true.

If the Lola is ready by March 2009 I will be enjoying a 3-2 in 500Kg of aluminium tub/space frame racing sports car, oh lord, it should be good.

If it matches this year I will be chuffed, but at 2 x the power to weight of the 911 Bitza...cripes, what an adventure!

Thanks for all the kind words and the encouragements and sometimes meeting some of you at the hills. If the Lola Porsche is not ready then I will be out in the Bitza.

When I set out on 2008 Trish thought it a good idea to celebrate 20 years of ownership of the 911. What a good idea it was.

So, back to the garage!
Happy fast and safe motoring,

Graham.[:)]

Sorry to hear the sad news Graham. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us over the year. Very jealous of the fun you have been having. These old 911s might be old and slow compared to newer cars but they do have soul in bucket loads. Hence the enduring appeal.

Good luck with your project for next year.

Ian.

Ditto thoughts, dear boy. And thanks for the season's reports - it has reminded me why I decided to
(a) get into Porsches, and
(b) join a motor club

nb could you stand being a celebrity, followed wherever you race etc etc?

Thanks for the thoughts everyone.

Shame for the year to end this way, but I've had 11 great events all over the place.

When I started out I knew I was out-classed, sometimes by Quattro's with 3.5 x the bhp of the 911. The plan was to get Championship points and not to come last!

I did achieve those goals, but the principle goal was to have some good fun.
The wheels have not been off the 911 since March. The underside is a bit mucky as a result..I checked the tyre pressures all of 4 times and they never changed, so I didn't bother again.
It has run on any brand of 2 star unleaded, and has used a litre of oil in 3000 miles.

It has never faltered, and has been perfect all year. It's pleased the crowd I hope, and especially the 7 marshals who were 'treated' to a helmets-free blast up Prescott at near racing speed, and then there was the zap past all the Splitty and Bay window Campers on the M5 one sunny saturday afternoon on open exhausts..showing off I must admit (some boy racers never grow up...)

Car makes you feel alive. [;)]
I wonder if I will still have it in another 20 years?
Might have a Porsche electric motor in it by then! [8|]
