My 992 C2S has gone but at last my GT4 has arrived!

the second is not to spec the smoking package and keep the cubby hole (which is what I have) as I've read that with the smoking package it is very easy to inadvertently actuate the cover with the elbow/arm whilst driving.

I think that's some sales talk from someone who didn't spec it [8D]

I've never accidentally opened it on either of my Caymans...

Hehehe.... I only have experience of a 'non-smoking' pack so can't comment if what I read holds water...:ROFLMAO:

You would have to have a very funny elbow or be a contortionist to accidentally open the smoking package.

Personally I think the salesman is wrong about the climate but it’s not really a big issue.

The gear ratio issue is in my view wildly overstated. Yes if you want to be howling at 8,000 rpm when driving at sane road speeds you might be disappointed but for actually making swift effective progress without sounding like a pillock the ratios work fine. There’s more than enough power and torque between 4 & 5,000rpm that in the public road you don't need any more. Drop to second for a very effective overtake.

Seriously, if you want to be thrashing the nuts off your engine on public roads you really need a car with less than 400hp.

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for your comments, like you say with Porsche you can go on and on ticking the options list. If I intended to keep the car longer, I would have ticked some more boxes as suggested.

I have tried to spec the car to suit me but also wanted to keep an eye on possible future value and my dealer talked me out of the climate control, Bose and the ceramic brakes as he didn’t feel that these would give me any more in terms of future value for the car in a years time.

It is the more involved driving experience that excites me most about the GT4 over the 992, you are right about the left foot though, whenever I drive my daughters manual Audi Q2, I often forget to depress the clutch and end up stalling it, much to her amusement.

Fingers crossed on the delivery dates and thank you for all of the information and knowledge that you share on the forum, I have found this invaluable (now that I better understand the search option).

Cheers,

Martin
I always find the way dealers spec showroom cars to be really strange...I got my 718 from Showroom stock and made some assumptions based upon years of high(ish) end cars that things would be there...I remember picking up the car in a car April evening and realising that I’d have to dim my own mirrors and thinking WTF i;ve not done that for over 20 years!

I was looking at a GTS in the local OPC a month or so again and was amazed to find that whilst they hadn’t spec’d climate or cruise they had ticked the box for different (black) door handles and spoiler and were passing on the options to the buyer at a crazy price....if i‘d been convinced to have the car I’d have insisted on the cruise retrofit and the contrasting parts to the be painted the body colour (Carmine Red)...likewise climate AC is fine but in this day and age climate should be standard, and I don’t I understand why a dealer would talk you out of it. Even in a small cabin the constant fiddling with the buttons is a pain....especially with a passenger who insists on fiddling with them every couple of minutes!

Simon,

I do agree with you and some of the other members that have kindly contributed to the thread. Perhaps I should also point out that when speccing my car I also had to have a regard on final cost, as I didn’t want to put any more cash into the acquisition of the new car, so ultimately managed to swap out of my 18 month old 992 C2S and into the GT4 by way of a cost neutral deal. After all, I had to get it sanctioned by the management who after 13 years at the same house is wanting a new kitchen too...

My dealer, also tried to talk me out of having cruise control, but I use this a lot and stood firm, in fact I even paid to have it retro fitted to my Boxster. I find it particularly useful on road trips where motorways are involved, given that I personally find that in restricted speed zones, it is easy to get distracted and inadvertently exceed the speed limit, so cruise control is great for me in this regard and it’s not exactly an expensive option.

As for the many comments on climate control, I will have to wait and see if this was a mistake, given the feedback on here it sounds as though it may have been, although my dealer still insists that the standard AC will be fine for my occasional use of the car as it’s not going to be a daily driver, either way, it’s too late now as the car is locked down. I’ll share the outcome good or bad in due course,

I‘m probably the only person who can’t wait for November to come, as I count down he days, especially as my 911 has now gone.

I couldn’t agree more Martin. Like you I wouldn’t spec a car without cruise control [yet another wrong call from the sales person!], and really it’s something which ought to be a standard fitment on all Porsches given the low cost. I reckon the term is very outdated nowadays - speed control would be a much more appropriate term - and I use it all the time, including built-up areas where it’s so easy to exceed the speed limit especially in a performance car and where various types of ‘safety cameras’ are prevalent.

According to this article it won’t be too long before it’s going to be taken out of our hands anyway:

Martin,

You share a new build experience many Porsche owners have gone through. Most of us have been in a quandary of some sort over the final spec before the lockdown curtain descends. As you say, you will have to live with your choices good or bad. We all have a budget to adhere to, and there are often other domestic matters to consider in the interests of peace and harmony![;)]

Regarding the GT4 gearing, as Graham has correctly pointed out for normal road use the gearing is absolutely fine. With the torque of the 4.0 six used intelligently, I am sure you will have no complaints at all about the road performance. On the race track the long gearing would be a disadvantage on tight, twisty circuits, though much less so on fast, high speed tracks. Probably, Porsche chose to keep the intermediate gearing long on the 982 GT4 to keep the emissions at a reasonable level.

Enjoy your new GT4. November is not all that far away.

Brian

Hopefully not too much longer to wait for my GT4, I have just heard from my local Porsche Centre that my car is due to come off the production line today. Fingers crossed I might have it by early November, subject to any further Covid restrictions... In the meantime, I’ve been busy treating my garage to a fresh coat of paint and a bit of a makeover in readiness for our new arrival.

Martin,

Best to check with your Dealer re the tracker but if you're looking for alternative quotes which include track days I can recommend specialist brokers ClassicLine and ManningUK. I've been happy with both and currently I'm with ClassicLine whose policy includes UK and European breakdown cover as well as approved track days [PCGB and other] for which you just need to notify them and they issue a cover note. The usual excesses apply and I don't think there's a limit on the number that you attend.

Jeff
Hi Jeff,

I just wanted to drop you a line to thank you for your recent insurance recommendation, it has been really useful and just goes to show the benefit of the forum.

Sadly ClassicLine weren’t able to help as the car is too new for their providers, however, Michael at ManningUK couldn’t have been more helpful. They didn't need a tracker, they cover track days as you said and the premium was £400 less expensive than Locktons (excluding the additional £200 cost of the tracker), although to be fair the Locktons policy did have some additional benefits that Manning don’t offer, however, I think that the Manning policy ticks all of the boxes that I need, so I have decided to go with them.

So thank you Jeff for your recommendation, your comments above have saved me £600!

I could have got the climate control or painted brake callipers after all... 😉😂

Cheers,

Martin

Hi Martin,

Result! Very pleased to hear that the information was useful and that you managed to get sorted with ManningUK. I haven’t used them for a while but always received a competitive quote, and although thankfully I never had to make a claim [always the acid test!] I always received good service from them and I hope you will too. The track day cover I’m sure will come in useful for the GT4 and seems to be the preserve of the specialist insurers.

Disappointingly you’re not the first person on the forums to receive an uncompetitive quote from Locktons despite the fact that they’re the Club’s favoured insurer. I have to say that I’ve not managed to get a competitive quote from them myself on the odd occasions I’ve contacted them.

After a difficult few days within our PCGB region 5, it was great to receive some nice news yesterday afternoon.

I finally got the call that I was waiting for from my Porsche Centre after what feels like an eternity, to be told that my new car has arrived at the port in Grimsby.

To say I’m excited is an understatement, hopefully not too much longer to wait now...

Can't see the point of climate control myself. IMO, GT cars should be simple, turning them into luxury cars makes no sense to me.

Decisions, decisions [:D]

Climate control always divides opinion Manny, and like many others I’m of the opposite opinion to you. The temperature in the Cayman’s small cockpit can change quite quickly, and who wants to be fiddling around with temperature controls when you can just set and forget?

More to the point, it shouldn’t be an option on a car costing £75k+ when it’s standard on cars costing less than half the price, and I think a lot of buyers - and some sales staff maybe? - don’t appreciate fully what they’re actually getting with the standard spec.

That’s good to hear Martin. Hope transfer to your Dealer and subsequent handover to you goes smoothly.

Keep us posted on progress.

I'm very glad of climate control given that both the front and rear windscreens are facing into the sun most of the time (when it's out). When you combine that with a 4.0ltr engine effectively sitting in the same compartment as you my opinion is climate control is a must, unless as Jeff says you like constantly adjusting AC and fan speeds on the move...

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for your message, fingers crossed it won’t be long now...

I hope to be able to share some pictures and join the long running AC debate once, I have experienced it. Either way I can’t wait to own my first GT car.

Yours,

Martin

At last I have received the call from my PC that I have been waiting for. My car will be delivered to the PC today and I can go to see it this afternoon on my way home from a business appointment. If everything goes to plan, I will pick it up on Tuesday next week it will then go and have a machine polish if required and Ceramic coating applied on Wednesday / Thursday next week. I don’t think that I am going to be able to sleep between now and then...

The government have announced that a ban on all private vehicle journeys will come into effect on Thursday 2 December..............[;)]

Enjoy - and don't forget to post the collection pics!

And here it is... The Eagle has at last landed. (Well the Crocodile 🐊) I managed to go and have a sneak peak after work today on my way home, and I’m absolutely delighted with it. Roll on next Tuesday!
