nice wheels, strangely familiar !

Those wheels have a different spoke pattern to the ones I have but they look good all the same, they're similar to the ones that were on my mates 993 before he sold it. How long have you had your car for?

I didn't actually do much of the the stripping down of the car for the respray (not enough time due to work) so I thought the rubbing strips clipped on. Be warned not only in taking it off of damaging paint, but if you park up anywhere and someone bumps the car, it has nothing to protect it, as I found out 3 days after I 1st got it back from the respray it had over the summer..
 
That does look good but sadly I have made a slight mess of them particularly the near side rear one as I went out for a drive and got dazzled by the sun and curbed them really not happy as I've only had them a week today.
 
That was partly why I didn't keep those wheels for my current car. They were in need of a refurb and frankly I couldn't justify the astronomical cost of refurbing split rims.
 
The cheapest reputable refurbers I found locally were asking north of £800 to do all four of those.
 
Ouch I've been given a number for someone who can do them so I'll find out what they will charge on Monday but it may be a while before I do them if £800 is a likely figure.
 
I think it was £200+ per wheel because they have to replace all those wee tension bolts with new, as well as dismantling to refurb each part separately.

The rubbing strips are jjust stuck on; no holes to fill. Be careful if you take them off that you don't lift the lacquer or even the paint under them.

I would think carefully about doing this. I did it on mine but in hindsight I wish I could find the things and refit them, in various house moves I seem to have lost them. The car looks better without them but the problem is at some point the car had a spray job on one side where they forgot to remove the strips, hence leaving a horrible step after taking the strips off. I tried rubbing it flat but the other problem is the paint is old in places yet fresh underneath the strips so it all leaves a bit of uneveness that ultimate would need a respray which I don't want to spend the money on. If one is serious and willing to put a lot of time and effort in to get a perfect finish then go for it otherwise don't bother.

I don't think Jon's wheels are real splitrims, so the screw heads are for show which would reduce the cost massively.
 
That may well be the case which would be quite nice cost wise. But with the tyres off, the top quarterish of the wheel was shiney and the rest a sort of white colour so I think they may well be real ones.

Just checked the oem bbs split rims on my beemer, there's only around 20 bolts holding them together.

I think I know the ones you're on about they were on the E39 and E36s I think as an individual option.

Standard 17 inch on the 328 sport I think, mine have been refurbed in the past but just the rim was machined leaving the centre painted.

That would make all sorts of sense. I was looking at the pics thinking "but the rubbing strips are still on the car..."

That being the case then my previous post should be taken to refer only to the side rubbing strips. The rear bumper insert I believe does have holes behind it. On the upside the bumper is just fibreglass so it isn't going to rust if you mess with it and it should be pretty easy to fill the holes.

The wheels look superb. Sorry to hear you curbed one. Hope this can be sorted relatively cheeply.

I have just picked up a 1991 - 944 S2 Cab from London this afternoon with a low mileage in white, so look forward to catching up at the next Region 15 meeting.
