My new (2nd!) 944 :)

ORIGINAL: david924s

944s have a habit of pulling in the exhaust fumes from the rear through the hatch seals, something to do with the effect the hatch and spolier have on the air when travelling, my 924S use to do this until I changed th ehatch seal and put new locks and pins in to hold the hatch down tightly.

Well you may have a point here! One of the boot pins is worn so often comes open, which is on the exhaust side - so it could be that. Although my last one had exactly the same thing (but on the other side) yet never had any smell.

Looks very straight and shiny, i love the early cars especially the dash, hope it serves you well and keep plenty of quality wax on it to keep that deep red look, as opposed to pink !

Cheers! I forgot to mention that it's had a recent full respray :)

I do love (and prefer) the square dash despite the cracks it gets, although interestingly something I've noticed is that the central panel (where the oil guage, clock, etc is) is a black colour not the usual silver colour. No idea why!

I'm getting there ... ish ... on sorting parts, will find out about the rest of them today then it should be in the garage for a few days next week. Whilst I'm there I'm going to get them to take a look at another issue ...

Recently it's not been starting up very well at all, well actually after the first week or two it's been like it since.

Turn the ignition, kicks in and the revs go up to just above the 1k mark, then they dip down (I'd expect it to sit at around 800rpm right?) ... but they dip down too much and it stalls. 4 times out 5 this happens.

Every time I start up now, I turn the ignition for a few seconds longer and dab the accellerator and away I go ... but it's annoying doing this and probably not doing the starter motor much good []

What should me and my mechanic be looking at?

Cheers!

My Old 924S had a black center console panel the same as yours and that was an 86 car so maybe common parts in those times.

Well done!! That looks a very special car[:)] I think you chose wisely in getting a decent one rather than trying to salvage the one you had before.

Hoohaa! I think I may have at last solved the petroly-exhaust-fumey smell creeping into the car.

I put new boot pins in and rubber seals (top and bottom) at the weekend, but unfortunately the nearside pin (coincidentally above the exhaust) still didn't hold down and kept popping out. Oh and I got the exhaust hole fixed, but of course the smell was as strong as ever.
Looking at the locking mechanism, one of the two 'lips' was no-where to be seen (that holds the pins in) ... so I took out the box and with jiggling the metal cable back and forth it free'd itself ... so added some grease and WD40 ... gave it some wiggling back and forth and it's now locking down tight and staying there! So far so good.

Now someone this morning told me to investigate the gear box rubber sleeves for cracks and holes as apparently they too can be a source of fumes creeping in, specifically the inner rubber sleeve.

Lo and behold there's a tiny hole on the inner sleeve, but was surprised it wasn't making a tight seal round chassis lip around the gear stick - basically just hanging there for no reason, so have fed that over the sides of the lip to make a seal. To complete the seal, the top of the rubber sleeve (its like an upside down funnel of course) that too was loose, but wasn't going to fit over the black plastic casing surrounding the metal gear stick so......

...I've gaffa taped it to the plastic casing lol! And guess what .... fume smell has gone! Gave it some runs and some welly, with windows open to try and recreate the air circulation as before (worse when windows open) and hasn't returned! I'll give it another go later.

However is the gaffa a very bad idea? I'm not sure what 'heat' comes up from underneath that that could also cause issues in itself? Porsche can get me the inner sleeve and shouldn't be more than £17 ... but I'm off on holiday first thing Thursday morning and it may not arrive in time, was hoping I wouldn't be choking to death the passengers ;) so if that's an ok enough fix for now then I can replace when I get back.
