Mystery battery drain

Can anyone help Tony with this?

I have a very good 1986 924S (79k miles, original Alpine White paint, tools, service book, handbooks etc.).

I am plagued by an elusive flat battery problem. In very cold weather I have only to leave the car untouched for a week to find its battery totally flat (wont even turn the engine over slowly).

The battery is newish, and my repairer (Porsche Strasse) have checked the charging and found it to be excellent; they have also checked for 'drains' on the electrical system - none found. Strasse's only comment was that the wiring at the front end of the car is hardening up and will eventually need replacing.

I originally suspected that the Sigma security alarm system was draining the battery, and tried leaving it with only the immobiliser in operation. This did not help.

Lacking any electrical power at the garage where I keep the car, I cannot unfortunately, use a trickle charger to keep the battery in life, so I am obliged to seek the root cause of the problem.

Your help in diagnosing the mystery ailment would be much appreciated.

Regards.

Tony

Hello Paul,I would dissconnect the battery lead and see if the battery held its charge first.

Good advice, It's pretty easy to disconnect the earth strap, and also an excellent anti theft device [:D]

Reconnect the battery after a week or two & see if it starts, if it doesn't then you know it's the battery simply not holding its charge.

I get exactly the same thing with my 944, plus it's noticably worse in cold weather. Battery is new, alarm is off, immobiliser is on, car won't start after about 5 days. I ended up getting myself a battery conditioner for xmas!
