N-Rated Tyres

Richard

Please give an example of what you mean by R compound.

Would this be as in 205/50R16 or am I looking for something else.

BTW cant wait to see why Hawkheads post has been held up!

The Michelin Cup tyre (picture below), Pirelli PZeroC and Corsa, Dunlop D98J or D01J, Kumho Victoracer, Toyo RA1, Yokohama AO32R etc. They are all sticky compound tyres with much higher grip (and faster wear), minimal tread pattern and less tread depth. My PZeroCs, for example look more like a grooved F1 tyre than a road tyre - much like the Michelin Cup tyre. They may have stiffer construction. They are essentially competition tyres with just enough tread to make them road legal and usable in the wet (but marginal in heavy rain).

This is the Yoko AO32R. Similar concept, different tread design. Big tread blocks and little tread.

Contrary to intuition, the R-compound tyres often wear better on track than harder road tyres as they generate much less heat (less tread block flex) and dissipate heat better (thinner tread ie., 4-5mm tread rather than 7-9mm). Some people even shave the tread down to 1-2mm to improve both these characteristics.

Lucky me the Michelins, as per the picture, I have on a 2nd set of wheels that came with the car.

Are you saying you haven' t used them yet????

Bolt those puppies on and try them out. The stick is awesome. They are worth often 3 or more seconds a lap and make roundabouts a whole lot of fun as well [:)].

Now that we are comparing eggs and eggs (I am aware of the tyres but hadn' t heard them refered to as R compound before).

I have heard all of what you say above and find it easy to agree with most but the idea of shaving (buffing) the tread to make it last longer dosn' t fit well with me. Logic says why not just let them wear down to that point.

Searching the web yesterday I saw that someone was offering an R tyre (I think it was the Kumho Victoracer) as normal, shaved and " heat cycled" .

I have heard good reports of the Dunlop' s apparently a lot cheaper than the Michelins and as good.

There is a bit of a saga there:

1) I haven' t looked close but I have a feeling the tread is a bit marginal for road use.

2 A friend is storing them for me until I get my storage sorted and I don' t want to muck him about, taking them in and out of his place.

3) Being the first track day in the car and having done all my other track days on road tyres I didn' t want to to introduce another variable. I have heard they' re no good in wet conditions and there was a possibility of rain on the day.

4) I had bought a set of 17" Cup 1' s with part worn S01' s and thought they would do the job hence (see earlier post) I' m stuck with the Avon ZZ3' s on the front and will soon have to find something to put on the back.
