Negative lead for jump starting

That is very kind of you Fen, and despite your claims that it isnt up to much I am willing to try anything! Let me know if you think it looks okay and i will transfer the postage funds your way as soon as I can. Ahh the prospects of a solar powered Porsche, who would have thought it![8|]
 
Would you believe I can't find it again? I'm beginning to wonder if I just binned it. I'll have a better look over the weekend. The sodding boiler is still leaking though.
 
Of course, it's always possible that the cigar lighter socket is protected against reverse current by a diode - they're intended to supply rather than accept current. This would stop the thing in its tracks. You'd need to check the car wiring diagram.
 
I tried one a few years ago. It didn't seem to work even though my volmeter could detect a minor change in voltage. I even sent it back to the makers who pronouncede it OK.

I think things have changed a lot in recent years so I think it might be worth buying a new one (as big as you feel you want to spend!).
 
Yeah, you won't see anything much on a volmeter. The car battery has an internal resistance approaching zero, so you can dump a few hundred milliamps into it without seeing the volts go up noticeably. You've got to measure the current to get a proper idea what's going on......

You have to use clamps to the battery in a 944 as the ciggy socket is isolated when the ignition is off.
 
I thought there was a 12v point on top of the bulkhead covered by a blue? cap - what's that for? The cap just pulled off and I'm sure there was 12v present when I checked it with my meter.

Seemed to recall this was mentioned on the Titanic site a while back.
 
yes page 1 of this thread, and it could be used, however there is more glass in the boot so it is probably the better option.

I use trickle chargers connected to the cigar lighter on my 944 and my 924S with no problems. I have a male connector with positive and negative wires connected to cocodile clips which in turn are clipped to a piece of wood (to keep them apart). The clips from the charger clip to these.
I don't know if the later 944 models have a supply to the cigar lighter when the iginition is off or not.
The other method is to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery as some cars 'drain to earth' which will eventually flatten the battery.
