New 944 owner signing in.

Evening all,

Just picked up my first Porsche, it was a bit of an impulse buy to be honest so I don't know a lot about the 944. I've spent the last 3 months looking for an early 911 but have only found expensive tat. No MOT but only requires a small repair to the rear passenger sill, the rest of the car is in VGC.

Anyway, here she is in all her guards red glory - and only £600.

That looks a great buy even if you have to spend a little on it for mot you could still be quids in[;)]

From what I can see its a very genuine, standard car. The last owner was an old guy, had it for 4 years. There is a small dink in the front spoiler and the rear sill rust but apart from that its in fantastic condition. Even the black pinstripe half leather interior is very good.

I've got to do some digging with regards the service history as the service book isn't with the car. Also need to sort a slight pull to the left when driving. Seems to drive ok apart from that, didn't go mad on the journey home though as its been unused for 2 years.

Anyway as I said, I know nothing about the 944 and what areas of trouble to check. I'm sure i'll know more by the end of the week.

Belts should NEVER be left more than 4 years. Check this before driving it or it could be a terminal failure...[]

Mine pulled to the left like mad when I picked it up, not in the test drive. Was only tyre pressures so hopefully yours is something simple.

Cambelt and balance shaft belt have luckily been replaced.

Good! Also worth checking the oil seals. My car had been laid up for 18 months and they had perished, leading to contamination of the belts costing me a secend balt change after 5000 miles. []

If you read back over the last 6 months or so of posts on this forum you'll learn everything you will ever need to know about the 944 in all it's guises. And a whole load you won't need to know! [&:]

If they're genuine Fuchs wheels and are in good condition they'll be worth £600 on their own.

ORIGINAL: flipatron

This is the passenger inner sill, doesn't look to bad

Yikes []

Get that sorted asap or it will be a major drain on the wallet that ends up much more than the purchase price was [&o]

Gotta love Fuchs wheels [8D]

Dangle the camera through the access hole then put your hand in to hold the camera then click away until you get the required shot. It took me 4 shots on each side to get the photo I wanted.

Thanks - will try that.

I should have probably added some constructive advice in my last post!

If your cills are not showing bubbling under the paint from the outside, then you might be ok. A bit of rust inside the cill might not be too much of a worry, but only if it has not rusted right through the metal. I would get some rust remover injected inside your cills and see what happens thereafter. You could use something like Dinitrol:

http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=8295&frostProductName=Dinitrol%20ML%20Cavity%20Wax%20(500ml)&catID=28&frostCat=Rust&frostSubCat=Dinitrol&subCatID=35

If there are holes in the metal the Dinitrol will probably come through the exterior paint, in which case you will need some repairs or at worst new cills. But if it is only surface rust inside the cills you'll be ok

Hope that helps. Your car looks great btw.

Thanks Phil,

TBH there is a little area where you can feel the metal is weak. I'm sure if I pushed hard enough my finger would go through. I'll try what you've suggested though, I may be lucky!

All the best with the car ... it does look like a good example.

I'd echo the comments from the other chaps on here - do a search on this forum for 'rusty sills' over the last 6 months and you'll see why. In fact, to save you the hassle of the search, here's the link to pictures of Peter Empson's waggon ...

Rusty sills can, and do, cause problems in 944's ...
