New 964 Owner

Hi,

My name is Nick Little, I live in Ware in Hertfordshire and I became the proud owner of my first 911 in November last year. I bought a 93 Polar Silver C2 convertible and have not stopped grinning since.

While the car is (in my opinion) immaculate the heater fan in the engine compartment is beginning to make a noise which is audible over the engine noise when ticking over (800rpm) and sounds like the bearings need greasing. Not being particularly mechanically minded I have investigated but the fan is encased so I cannot make a visual inspection as I do not know how to remove the casing.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there anything I can do myself to correct this? Is the casing easy to remove and refit?

Any advice would be welcomed ahead of seeking qualified assistance.

Regards,

Nick

The 'blower motor' at the LHS in the rear, it is a common problem, either packing up ar noisy, maybe just needs aligning as mine did, it was offcentre and blades hitting the side.
You can easily get to the fan and dismantle it so far, there are 3 bolts (arrowed) to remove the blower and the 2 large bits of air trunking (arrowed) held on by big jubilee clips and a plug on the lower trunking.
Just remember when you remove the lower trunking from the heat exchanger fill the large hole with a rag otherwise you will have to turn the car upside down to get your socket set back [;)]
If you find that the blower is shot, the best option is to buy a motor for the 993, this is a newer design almost identical but needs spaced differently.
Hopefully someone here who has done this may assist with this 964/993query

Hi Nick,

How would you describe the noise? I have an intermitent high pitched noise at idle and I suspected the alternator bearings (although I havent yet gone any further). I'd be interested to know how you got on...

Les.

Hi Les,

The noise is identified as the bearings in the heater blower. I have managed to investigate further by removing the cover. This confirmed that it was not an alignment problem which could apparently have been the other problem.

I first identified the noise as being related to the heater blower because it could be stopped by turning the heat dial to minimum and the fan speed to zero and after a short while the fan squeaked to a stop and the noise ceased.

Please bear in mind that this is the limit of my technical knowledge so far and also the obvious differences between my 964 and your 3.2 (as per your picture) in terms of the workings of the hearer system. The 964 being fully electronic so the same test may not be appropriate.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Hi Neil. Firstly, let me say congratulations bud [:)]

Can I just ask when you bought it ? As I'm still in negotiations with the seller as far as I was concerened []. I'll be nosy and ask how much you paid of course ? and if needed can tell you any faults/good points of it as the seller wasn't very informed but I inspected it to the Nth degree.

Cheers,

Mike

Well when the seller is happily negotiating back and forth I can't make things go any quicker can I ?

Thanks for your helpful and constructive comment though

Always one smart arse eh ? Hope I get the chance to return the favour someday . . . . . . . . now go be a tool somewhere else please

Hi Mike,
I'd seen the car 10 days ago but was unable to make a move as I had my white 944 to dispose of first. This eventually happened on Thursday afternoon and I was then able to approach the seller, asked for an appointment, travelled down yesterday and bought her. I've been looking seriously for a couple of months and this one just fits the bill perfectly for me.

I did negotiate the price down but perhaps not as much as you may think. The numbers suggested by club members in the other topic are spot-on I would say. Yes, if you know any faults with the car then that information would be much appreciated. It's very magnanimous of you to offer, thanks.

Oh, and good luck in your search, hope you find a nice one.

Cheers,

Neil

Well I'm glad at least it's gone to someone who's gonna use it - as the owner most certainly didn't. Just a bit pissed (not at you by the way) that I've been negotiating all week (which the seller was happy to do) and have drawn a large sum of cash which I'm now stuck with over the weekend. What time did you collect yesterday Neil ? Just wondering as the seller sent me an e-mail last night at half 7 to say he's thinking about my offer and will be in touch after the weekend ? Hence the reason I wasn't panicking as he didn't seem to be in too much of a rush.

You're gonna wanna check the corrosion under both sill plates, the jacking point (drivers side front) and seam splits by the rear engine mounts - all need work. Check the shitty repair of the NSR arch too, as it's been a very poor job. It's not worth doing until it comes through, but make sure you underseal it now (making sure it's dry first) and it'll buy you a lot more time. The guy didn't even know about this - as he just handed money over like a walking cheque book and never bothered to check ! One base seal is leaking too, but I don't think this is too bad. Think the rest of the points are in the other post.

I'm glad you've found one, and I don't think it's a bad one to be honest. It has it's faults but they can be rectified with some expenditure, so I hope you got it cheap enough.

As for my search, I think I'm done if I'm honest. I've spent far too many months being messed about in one form or another, so I fear me and 964's are through before we've started. I'm getting tired of wasting my time and effort and money.

Mike

Mike,
Thanks for the heads-up. I'd spotted the sills and engine bay seam but not the jacking point. I bought the car yesterday afternoon, say 1pm ish.

If I were you I'd persevere with the search, there are plenty more out there, and the market is waking up around now.

Well deffo not happy with seller now then - as he's just messing me about now. Cheers anyway, and yeah get that jacking point seen to - save it getting worse and turning into a bigger issue. There's also a suspension knock NSF somewhere - didn't get chance to look into it further but I know it's not shocks/mounts/droplinks, so start with a full front end spanner check mate.

Nah, I think I'm done with getting messed about thanks - I've had enough and wasted too much time.

Mike

Neil congratulations on your purchase, enjoy every minute [;)]

Hey Mike, really sorry for you mate. I can sense how pi**ed off you are. [] If you were that keen to get a 964, there will be one out there for you. Some people do take the pi**, but there are good folk out there that would be more than happy for there pide and joy to be bought by an enthusiast. I know you may well pay a bit more, but have you looked or considered buying from some well respected independants. You hang on in, i'm sure you'll find the right one. If its any consolation that one wasn't ment for you ....... yours is just around the corner!!

Thanks Paul.

Does anyone have any thoughts on my initial questions? (This thread seemed to go a bit OT[:D]).

my clutch bites about 1/2 way up but disengages about 3/4 down, but its 10 times better when warm than cold

clocks just pull out, but might need a bit of persuasion as the rubber grommets which hold them in can stick to the dash.. use some fairy liquid on them to put back and its much easier!

my brakes require a bit of a shove, but they are not at all spongy and you can comfortably heel and toe, so not that much force is required

i think clutch and brakes are on the same hydraulic system so might be worth spending 25 quid on for ATE fluid and a pressure bleeder and bleed both out; could cure both gripes..

congratulations on the purchase

I have just bought a 1991 964 Carrera 2 in black with black leather, tipronic, 125k but with full and extremely comprehensive service history, virtually every bill from new & MOT certs from 1998, Only 3 previous owners 1 of which only had it for 6 months as he was 'too large' to fit in it!

Air con, cruise control and electric sunroof, elec windows and mirrors.
Just had service, new brakes inc caliper slides all round and new tyres, had a body refurb and repaint 2 years ago to a high standard.

All keys and owners manuals.
Completely original apart from mint condition 996 alloys.

I buy and sell a few cars as a hobby and couldnt resist when i spotted this as i have wanted one since a child but would sell for the right price.

Sorry, forgot to say congrats on the purchase Neil it looks great.

I like the red but always wanted a black one myself after watching the 'Bad Boys' movie.

Neil,
You might want to check for "plate" lift;this affects all the calipers and is caused by the aluminium calipers corroding, which squeezes up the stainless steel plates that the brake pads slide in;this reduces the pedal feel, etc.

Congratulations Neil and comiserations Mike. I think both of you realise that most of the cars (because of their age) will need work doing. And the work never stops, you have to keep on top of them. Only today I took my headlamps off for the first time to put new, bighter bulbs in and found that I had to rebuild the units before putting them back [8D].

I guess Neil paid close to the asking price which is what I suggested in Mike's thread. It was a fair price IMHO. There's a similar car on PH up for £14,995 in Chester which might be worth a look [;)]. Also check the Peak Porsche website as the dealer (Andy) mentions a couple of cars that he's expecting in.

Neil, my brakes are phenomenal, far better than my boxster. It sounds like it would be worth getting them serviced, especially a brake fluid change as suggested by Ben. Maybe get the Clutch slave bled at the same time as that might help you with the clutch (mine bites about a 3rd of the way from the floor).
