New 964 web site

As a few of you will know, I, along with Steve Brookes (boxsey) and Kevin Senior (warmfuzzies) have been working on a new web site to serve the 964 community.

The justification came largely from the shortcomings of the PCGB web site in terms of the limited space available and, more importantly, from the lack of recent updates on John Miles' excellent site at www.porsche964.co.uk. John has moved on in his life and is now much more involved in photography rather than his Porsche and he just doesn't have the time to dedicate to the site.

With all this in mind, then, we have a new site at www.964uk.com which aims to retain it's vibrancy through constant updates relating to upcoming events as well as reports and photos from past events in addition to providing some in-depth reference material specifically for the 964 range of cars. All models within the 964 range are catered for, whether it be basic C2 or C4 or RS/RSR, Turbos and limited edition varieties too.

I won't go into too much detail about what is on the site other than to say that it's a constantly developing work and I'd urge you to just have a look and, pleae, comment about your likes and dislikes. I would draw your particular attention to the FAQ section where Steve, Kevin and I have wracked our brains in an attempt to cover many, if not most, of the common questions that come up on the various forums.

There are parts of the site which are not yet complete - some are not even started - but you'll get a good idea of what we are trying to achieve.

As with many sites of this type, the site is only as good as it's contributors and I would welcome contributions from anyone - whether it be photographs (preferably 1024 x 768 as a minimum) or documented "How Tos", reference material (like wheels, Rich!!) or anything else which will contribute to the usefulness of the site.

There is a "Contact Us" page on the site with an e-mail address and also a question/comment submission page. We would be interested to hear your views and reactions.

Regards

Dave

Dave,

I am not sure I agree with this I'm afraid, especially as you are the RS.

Surely you should be promoting the club website & forum as a one stop shop for all things 964? I have been told that, whilst it is quiet on this forum, there are other 964 sites which are more active. Whilst I tend to get the response I need when I post a thread, I do think it is a bit of a shame that a lot of potentially interesting threads peter out quite quickly.

If you look at some of the other forums on here, the 944 forum is the one I have most experience of, there is plenty of lively debate going on.

It would be great to see more going on here and I hope you will understand when I suggest that it is you who should be promoting this.

Hope you take this in the spirit in which it was intended.

Hi Colin,

It's good to have your thoughts on this. I'm sure Dave will come back to you on this but here's my response.

On taking over the Register duties Dave and myself wanted to get to work straight away on providing an information resource for the 964 members. This forum although quiet, already works well - as an example, I know both you and I got lots of friendly advice when we were looking for our cars. We were all set to fill the 964 section on the club's website with lots of technical and descriptive information about these cars but found that at the moment there is not enough space available. So we set about creating a dedicated 964 website to put it all. That's really the only reason for it. As you can see there is already lots of stuff on there and it will end up being very big when all the gaps are filled.

In addition to the website, there has been a lot of other hard work (especially by Dave) going on in the background which will become more evident in the near future. Suffice to say that we are doing these things for the good (we hope!) of the 964 register.

Again, if I may make a brief response in Dave's absence, he has and still is in contact with IT about this. In the hope of not turning this thread into a discussion of the club's new website, there is currently only the provision for a page of words on the model, a gallery and an events page. The first and third are only available via member login. We wanted to do more than that. Maybe we are just impatient.

Sorry I didn't get to see this until this morning but I think, in my absense, Steve had said it all.

I think the most significant thing is that the new web site does not have a forum - it's purely an informational site. There was never any intention to divert forum traffic from here, although as was mentioned earlier, there are other 964 forums.

The major reasoning behind the development of the new site was purely the lack of space and flexibility in the PCGB site. As part of the CoC, PCGB are constrained in the development of the Club web site in order to conform to the Porsche AG design model and it is this, more than anything else, which restricts what can realisticly be done. Anthony Shuker - the Club IT Director - has done a great job in bringing the Club web site to where it is with a very restrictive set of tools left to him from a previous Board. His priorities with things such as the Club Shop must come ahead of Register data and, to be perfectly honest, without significant assitance from the Register he would not be able to create the pages we wanted. Unfortunately neither he nor I can afford to spend weeks doing nothing else.

The Register section of the Club website is, as Steve said, limited to the Gallery for non-menbers and one additional page plus the Events Diary for members. Given that the new 964uk.com web site already has something approaching 100 pages and close on 20MB of data you can, hopefully, see how hopeless it would be to build it into the PCGB web site.

The new site is, consequently, independent and free from any restraints that the CoC would have imposed - but it is not a commercial site and makes no charges for anything. There ARE links to commercial sites as a service to 964 owners but there is no financial benefit to the site for doing so.

The simple fact is that without the new site there would be NO site - beyond the single page you can currently see at http://www.porscheclubgb.com/964/Default.aspx. And you have to log in as a member to get there!!

I'm afraid I can see no alternative.

Dave

Apart from the couple of reasonable concerns voiced above I've had a lot of positive responses from 964 Register members in response to the e-mail I sent out on Tuesday of this week.

One quite common request that comes out of many of those responses is for the new site to provide access to Running Reports - those reports created by the owner to document the events and happenings of their car over a period of time. It seems there is a considerable interest in this type of report although it's not a new idea by any means. However, what IS quite new is the fact that such reports - now, more modernly called "Blogs", are supported through standardised Internet facilities. One such site is www.blogspot.com and you may recall recently that Steve Brookes posted his encouragement for others to do as he has done - start his own 964 Blog. The great advantage of sites such as this is that the management and control of it is already in place for you to create what you want in a secure manner.

Steve's blog can be found at http://boxsey.blogspot.com/ to give you some inspiration. If you choose to set up your own blog by all means let us know and we'll be happy to provide a link to it (as we have done with Steve's) from the web site.

I've uploaded a fairly significant improvement to the menu system on 964uk.com today. Vastly improved response times on the menu selection and a few other small improvement along the way.

Still lots of pictures needed and still lots of content still to come.

Dave,

Keep up the good work, you work tirelessly to try and accomodate everyones needs, and IMHO do a damn fine job.

I'd just like to apologise for a slight "cock-up" today which may have prevented anyone entering the site. A case of trying to be too clever I'm afraid and a trial of a small hidden "hot spot" on the entry page - which Martin Molyneaux managed to find by complete accident - prevented the main site entry from working if you happened to be using Internet Explorer. The "hot-spot" has now been removed and normal service resumed.

The board, via Martin, have agreed we can use the PCGB logo on the site for links back to the main PCGB web site and the Forum (albeit without the official Porsche logo) so these have been reinstated and a direct link from the 964 Register page on the PCGB web site will now include a link directly to www.964uk.com.

Subsequent to Andy Bonner's post earlier today regarding the YouTube video of the Top Gear 964 piece I've included the first part of the video on the Carrera 4 page and the second half, on the 964 Turbo (Minty to it's friends), on the Turbo 3.6 page.

If anyone has any problems playing the videos please let me know at 964@porscheclubgb.com. I've found that Firefox and Google Chrome seem to cope with no trouble but Internet Explorer may have some difficulty, depending on your setup. Please mail me if you have trouble and I'll try to help.

Regards

Dave

John,

Feel free. I will do the same and put a link on the Turbo 3.6 page for you. It all helps to spread the word and I apprecaite your comments and assistance.
