New battery 997 GTS

I knew I spoke too soon above! The turbo has been in the garage for a few weeks on the Ctek - or so I thought. Late this afternoon I went to get it out for tomorrow's trip to AM. Door wouldn't unlock -uh-oh! Looked in and there was a red light on the Ctek. Unlocked the door with key and peered in - what the...
Dead as the proverbial. Now, under normal circumstances I could jump it of the other car, but being nose in the jump leads are not long enough. So, a quick call to Porsche Assist and the AA man turned up 10 minutes later - yes, 10 minutes! Started the car from his battery pack, ran it for 30 minutes and all is well. The problem was that the cigarette lighter connector wasn't connecting - I changed it for a spare one and away went the charger. Moral of the story? Don't just plug in the Ctek and walk away, make sure it is really connected to the car! Lesson learned. Top marks to Porsche Assist and the AA too.[:)]

Moll battery put back in for servicing - kept on a trickle charge

Hi,
Just wondered if I purchase a CTEK conditioner can I install it with the battery's terminals still connected to the car or should these be removed prior to connection?

The socket for the cigar lighter is normally live with ignition off, although on later models, the circuit immobilises after a fixed period to save the battery. This is only seems to apply to drawing current off through, as the socket remains live when charging is in progress.

I invested in a CTEK last winter after all the good press on here. The OEM battery situation is a pain. Although guys have managed 7 years out of them, clearly most people haven’t due to the maintenance required and demands put upon them with cars not being used daily.

I have the extended warranty as well and am due to renew, I’ve been told that having an OEM battery is mandatory, have to say the prospect of potentially replacing for another at circa £400 through an OPC is clearly frustrating. Interesting when I’ve asked the OPC about maintenance I was told none is required, but I realise it’s not a maintenance free battery, so this post has prompted me to go and check the levels. I always feel the cold weather at this time of year puts a noticeable strain on the battery and starting.
 
Cheers Paul & Clive ,I have been straight onto Amazon to purchase CTEK 50 plus longer cable and lead for cigar lighter so I should be ok now, also watched a video on You tube as it seems one can connect charger leads whilst the battery is fully connected to the car a thing I didn't realise was possible if the car had an ECU fitted. I got rid of my 996 Turbo because it seemed to leak it's charge in 2 weeks from a new Halfords battery (£120 one) but this 997 GTS loses it's charge in 4 days from Porsche battery!

I use the one in the passenger footwell which remains live ... still using the original 2011 battery

 
John, I have the Ctek fitted via the connectors to the battery terminals and can confirm you can attach the connectors with the main battery terminal connectors still in place but just take care.
 
Thank you for your advise,I have a fully charged battery plus a spare as I needed the spare when returning home from Spain I could not open the front bonnet on my turbo as it was stone dead had to connect spare battery's positive to fuse box terminal and negative on door hinge which is the standard way of opening the bonnet when the battery is totally flat.
I will need the CTEK as I am leaving the car again in the new year to obtain 3 months of vitamin D and just hope and pray it starts I will leave the bonnet open just in case it doesn't work.
 
Hi Bburn, exactly what I ordered and got it all a few days ago and stuck it straight on with no issues. Went out and started car today after it not moving for near a week and no slow cranking just perfect start!
 
hi all I had a problem with a flat battery just after I had my 997 turbo .used a slave battery to get the bonnet unlocked ,it was totally flat used the ctec charger .all was fine no resetting to do But I cannot get the tyre sensors to work now I have changed the sensors for brand new ones .but still will not reset .
any ideas chaps
