Has any one drive the SLK350 yet?
[] Yes my brother has a 350SLK and I suggest you go and drive one as soon as you can. Take the wife too as it was her suggestion. Then you will both realise just how "brillaint" Porsche are at making the Best Sports Car In The World.
On the other hand if you want a clever folding steel roof and don't care about the drive, handling, ride quality, residuals, luggage space, build quality & materials then go for the SLK it's a fine car but not the greatest or most brilliant in the market place. Good luck

I had a test drive in a Merc SLK 350 and was most surprised at how it differed from a Porsche Boxster, even the 'base' 2.7 version. The Porsche is in a different league; better made, better performance, more comfortable, cheaper [the Merc options are frighteningly wallet-busting] and the Boxster handles far, far better.
If image is important then a moving metal roof is, I suppose, something; but the smile when you look at your Porsche will be far wider than if you look at a Merc.
Go for a Boxster, save some money and/or spend the difference on those extras which will make your enjoyment even greater.
Good luck.

Make sure you go for a test drive, you will have a huge grin on your face when you realise what a poor contender it is to the Boxster.......you have to take what journos say with a pinch of salt, most of them think its 90% as good as the Boxster.......no chance!

The SLK is actually quite a bit cheaper (comparing S with slk350), I need to drive one ASAP. I now have no car!!!!!
This is a bit of an unfair comparison. If you are going to compare a 350 to anything, then perhaps you can save some money and consider a 2.7 Boxster which will still trump the Merc in every area already highlighted. Also, the residuals on a Boxster will be stronger than an SLK if the last 2 models are anything to go by.
To be honest Colin, if you are thinking about a Merc, then perhaps you should be thinking about a Z4 or a TT as an alternative, not a Boxster?
As a couple of people have said, you need to drive them both to see just how different the driving experiences are, and just how far ahead of anything the Boxster is. You may as well try and get a drive in the 997 Carrera as well, just to remind yourself not to spend an extra 20 grand over the Boxster!!
One more thing - my experience with Merc dealers is that they absolutely suck. The attitude I was shown was reprehensible when I was after details on a new SL500 a couple of years ago. My Porsche ownership experience for the most part has been faultless.

I've got PASM and 19"s on my car and I have to say that the PASM in normal setting is very comfortable, doesn't get crashy set in sport either, its a very good set up.ORIGINAL: colin smith
cool thanks for the replies.
Just one more question, has any one driven a boxster with PASM. The reason I ask is I've come across with that. Is it worth the money? Also the car has 19" alloys, does to make the ride too hard. I'm using the everyday and now I've turned 40 my backs not what it use to be!!!!!
Re the SLK contemplation, I would suggest that you visit a showroom to have a look at one before you actually drive one.
The build quality (IMO) is much better in the Porsche - really on another level, and you can eaily see some of the styling cues from the A-class in the SLK.
The SLK 350 engine is a peach, and the 7-speed auto gearbox is a gem too, but what you are looking at there is car more suited to boulevard cruising or motorway work than a true sportscar.
I looked into the SLK AMG aspect and came away with another new Porsche 987S, and I haven't given the Merc a second thought since (despite Mr Clarkson!).
PS - tandard ride on 19" Carrera S wheels is actually better than my 986S on 18"'s!
Happy test driving!

The fit and finsh seemed roughly the same, and one one thing porsche should nick from MB is the Neck warmer.
This is all starting to make my head hurt[X(]. Also just to confuse things my Audi dealer rang up and offered me a S4 cab, that V8 makes a great noise!!!
Also I have been doing some research and on piston heads forum, there seems to be alot of talk of rattle on the boxster ,is it true?
My car doesn't seem to - others do.
I don't see there is any comparison myself (although I think Daimler-Chrysler have done a better job of facelifting the SLK than Porsche did with the 987). The Porsche wins in almost every other area.
But I would say that wouldn't I?...[]
