New Dash!!!

ORIGINAL: homesea

Oh god I've found more, look at this:

Thanks.

Now my recurring nightmare is no longer going to be that it's finals at Uni and I haven't prepared for the exam, but that I wake up one morning to find my car's been "overhauled" to that.

The bit I can't wait to see are the beautiful 17" deep dish wheels. With the clearance of a front 924's wheelwell that'll mean either
a) The Full Formula Ford look, with the wheels several feet proud of chassis
b) Less that 2 degrees steering lock
I wonder which compromise they'll opt for.

This has to be the worst Porsche site ever!

How about a "911 fsr front spoiler" http://woods911.com/product_info.php?cPath=28&&products_id=55

"This stylish front spoiler will give your 911 a modern face lift, its only for a narrow body 911 although the one pictured is a wide body. "

Or a Porsche Cushion http://woods911.com/product_info.php?cPath=24&&products_id=52

"
Let all your friends know you're a serious Porsche enthusiast with this stylish Porsche cushion made from blue velvet. We have different shapes and colours, blue velvet in square or rectangular shape, or Black suede look material also in square or rectangular shape."

I think ebay may have been an easier way to sell this assortment of tat...

I love the way the site re-sized all the images - this one was my personal favourite...yellow 964

Do they do the 911 short wheel base conversion, like Dialynx did for the Quattro?

They have incorporated my pet hate "hand break" covers. Surely this whole site is a joke?

When I was seriously looking at that my intention was to explore filling the entire current dial space with a sheet of carbon fibre and then mounting the gauge unit in the midde of that. I didn't get far enough to measure the height to make sure it would fit so that may not actually be viable of course.

Talking entirely thoretically here (as I will never achieve the levels of development and power * that John and Fen have), I have always looked at things like those Stack displays with a slight cynicism. Yes, they look fine, but when you are devoting as much concentration to what is going on around you (namely, looking out of the windows), instruments need to be as big and clear as possible. And those rev counters are not exactly huge - smaller than the standard affair in the 944. And the digi numerals are distinctly hard to read.

I also have a preference for gauges over digi displays. Gauges give a qualatitive feel, namely a very quick glance gives you quite a good idea of what is going on. Numbers on a digi display don't have this property - you need to look at them and mentally process them to tell that 1- 2 - 7 on the MPH display is pretty brisk ...

I suppose the argument is that if you are on the track then the revcounter is the most important one, and that has a dial, and the rest (speed, temperature, fuel level, oil pressure etc) can all be fitted with alarms to warn you if they get to worrying levels. Maybe I'm just stuck in road-car mentality. Still can't see a good argument to change tho'.

* - The fact that S2's are much more powerful, suffer no lag and are driven by much better looking people notwithstanding, that is ...

Valid points. My reasons for wanting to go that route:

  • I'm a tart and the car is a track slag - it would be a sexy mod in light of those facts
  • The original gauges are inadequate fo the things I wanted to be able to monitor, and I have yet to see a good installation of additional gauges
  • I'm a tart and the car is a track slag
  • The dash datalogs, so you don't need to read the figures so much as upload them to a laptop afterward if you want to see how your IC intake and outlet temps varied relative to boost etc.
  • I'm a tart and the car is a track slag
  • They usually have a series of lights that can be programmed to come on at rpm points which I'd contend is much easier to see in the heat of battle than even a red needle on a black analogue dial.

As I've met him, and know what he looks like, I can confirm that Oli is correct. S2s are more powerful and suffer no lag. [8|]

first time that I have been truly speechless............[:(]

I think the most practical dash (guage wise) I have had was the Datsun 240Z many have copied none bettered imo

Paul,

Any time you want to join the S2 club, you'd be more than welcome. Having met you, I can confirm that you would be eligible to join the powerful, lag-free elite ... [:D]

Peanut, got piccies?

As one dashing chap to another, we can self-congratulate. He remarks upon my uncommonly good looks, and I return the compliment. It always used to be called good manners ...

Paul has always struck me as being firmly in possession of a Y-chromosone, therefore I have little interest in flirting with him!

........ lights that can be programmed to come on at rpm points which I'd contend is much easier to see in the heat of battle than even a red needle on a black analogue dial......

Ignoring Oli & Paul [:'(] I agree with Fens point 100%. I have a shift light from my Link engine management (and previously on the race car) and have found it invaluable.

I also had a digital speedo and, if anything, found it easier to read than an analogue one. The only point of a speedo is to moderate your speed relative to traffic regulations so are only interested during times of subtle change. You have a fair idea of the dynamic speed of your car - You don't see a bend ahead and think "that is a 50mph bend" and slow down accordingly. You know how fast the car will corner and are often unware of what speed that was.

A Tach works as an anologue guage as the numbers are almost irelavent - you know where on the dial maximum power is and you know where the red line is. That is all you need to know. With speed, however, the numbers are important so you look at the needle, see where it is pointing, read the numbers and work out how far between the numbers it is to establish your speed - it takes less mental computing power if you have the number staright away without having to work it out.

Stack dashes, and the like, often monitor many more parrameters than those shown on the screen at any one time. They show a warning light and throw up any interesting information as it becomes interesting and don't trouble you with it the rest of the time. You can, of course, scroll through the data at will.

Stepper motor Tachs are just fabulous and if I had an old 911, with proper guages, I'd have one in straight away.

I too have looked longingly at these dashes but at the moment struggle to justify the cost given there are still greater gains to be made for a similar investment elsewhere. I intend to fit one of the Eliptech shift lights when I get my car back, as they seem good value (although I was also tempted by the Armtech one at the Autosport show as it's even more discrete). I've been planning a full Alcantara covered dash for the car (hopefully I can gut some weight out of it too), so will see if I can neatly integrate it all together [:D].

I had an Armtech on the Westfield before the Stack and engine management driven lights.

Unless you go with a scale where the lights crash in the middle, like Formula One, I have my reservations over climbing scales. You can't quantify them in your peripheral vision where as a single light is a case of "Oh light!" - change. I still use the rev counter with the shift light as more of a warning if I get carried away.

I might still have the Armtech squirrelled away somewhere. If I can find it you would be most welcome to it.

Nice one, thanks John [:D]

I hadn't thought about the multiple lights being less clear, I suppose I could always integrate the sequential lights into the cluster and have a lone single repeater light on the dash top at redline for clarity.

I weighed an instrument pod for an oval dash car today and it comes in at a lardy 1.5 kg. I am terribly sad, I know! :ROFLMAO:
