New Engine

Hi Robin,
I did not extend the Porsch warranty that came with the purchase of a new car, mainly because I had expected that covering so small a mileage I was unlikely to encounter anything really major in such a high quality car - how wrong can you be. I had no hold over them other than the continued main dealer service history and the low mileage covered. Porsche also replaced the Rear Main Seal on that engine as a good will gesture earlier in its life. As it happens, had I extended my warranty by the three years to take me to were I am now I would be a whole lot more out of pocket !

I had an engine replaced at 19.000 miles and just under three years old with the same problem and without being covered by an extended warranty as, like you, I thought that I would be low risk with such a low annual mileage. This thread gives the details but essentially the engine was was replaced at Porsche GB's expense. This went a long way to restoring my confidence in the marque!

I'm glad its turned out well for you!

Thats very interesting Ivor, mine was also with Porsche Cambridge, very happy with thei service - car was with them for about 9 days in total, and does sound and feel differnt to the old engine. I asked the service staff if the new engine needed to be run in and they said "no it doesn't". Despite that advice I havent been pushing it hard since I got it back.

I had the same advice about not needing to run-in the engine but, like you, treated it like the original engine when the car was new - no high revs as advised in the handbook. The new engine certainly felt tighter and I missed the performance of the one with 19,000 miles on it. Only now, after 9,000 miles is the new one beginning to feel anything like similar in oomph. I remember going to my first Porsche Festival 4 weeks after taking delivery and an enthusiat with several years experience behind him saying that everything changes after the first 10,000 miles. It may just be my imagination but I agree.

On a club visit to Autofarm, the engine technicians thought it was probable that the new engine has the latest design of mounting for the intermediate shaft. They had both the old and newer versions on display - even to my untrained eye the latest one looked more substantial.

Let's now look forward to the legendary Porsche reliability......

Happy driving!

Your new engine isn't "new" It is a rebuilt unit.

New engines are fitted to cars during the manufacturers warranty period; rebuilt engines are fitted to cars out of the m/f's warranty.

I understand all ancilliaries are supplied with the rebuilt engine (not sure if those are rebuilt or new) including new plugs.

As explained to me by the OPC who replaced my duff engine under extended warranty[;)]

Hi Dave.
I know this is the story put out by the OPC but where would they get enough engines to rebuild as engines that are changed must be beyond help.
PS the car still looks great after your attention.

Thank you Lawrence[:D]

Engines for re-building?...I guess they salvage what they can and add in whatever's needed. I know mine had 3 split liners but rest was presumably OK, perhaps it was re-linered, cleaned and checked and put into service again?

Dave

it's probably no longer viable for opc's to strip and rebuild engines @ £90/hr and it's open to further warrenty issues further down the line. Far easier then to ship them back and have all the salvageable parts in one place. From all i keep hearing there is quite a few of them to work with!

Can you please explain this in more detail?
My Cayman goes in for its first 20,000/2 year service in December and I was planning to buy the warranty.

I think Howard is saying that he ran the car with no warranty for three years which saved him a couple of grand.

Aah! I see, he obviously bought a car that wasn't going to have any problems. I wonder if I could specify that on the options list when I buy the next one?

Alex I believe it's only available on the Boxster options list so unless you are thinking of seeing the "daylight" [8D][:D][8D] the answer is "No"

I bought mine with that expectation. The header tank is the only real item that has let me down in 7 years. [;)]
