new EU rules for car speed limiters from 2022

the EU plans to make it so that all new cars from 2022 have to have speed limiters which recognise the road you are on and limit you to that speed, either GPS or sign recognition. It doesn't stop there, also, existing models will have up till 2024 to comply with the new rules. The question for us is does this include classic cars, if not by 2024 I bet it will soon after or perhaps they will try to ban them altogether?... makes you think, doesn't it? one thing is clear, there will be absolutely no point in buying a new performance car from 2022, you could say, no point from now. this isn't passed yet by due to be voted through soon.....heard it for the first time tonight on Sky tonight and then looked it up, it's fact....

It appears drivers of cars currently on the road will be unaffected......

Edit - It appears autonomous emergency braking and lane deviation warning will also be required in these new cars as standard.
 
It will be enforced under our own legislation, as it will be enforced over here with or without Brexit. Main difference with cars is that we'll pay more for them once we leave!
 
I see our present-day classics, those that are close to the 40-year historic rule at least as being the last bastion for petrol heads....fingers crossed they don't change the current historic regulations. In 7 years time, assuming I haven't kicked the bucket, my car will reach the historic level and I'll be more than happy to drive through London with it's 'Electric only' rule (due around the same time as this speed limiter crap) and make some noise.....

curious thought - what about motorbikes then? can think of a few issues implementing all this euro-trash bulls**t on those.

I'm sure that quite a lot of anomalies will arise.

Apparently the AA thinks the system might have the unintended consequence of making drivers more reckless, not less and there was an amusing comment from AA president Edmund King: "Dodgem cars are all fitted with speed limiters, but they still seem to crash."

well fellas just wait, all non compliant cars will suffer a massive insurance excess, all electronic maps and software will suddenly become 1K to update, if you data is not upto date you will fail the MOT, and taken off the road

this is not about safety, its about money as usual,

and of course we will update the millions of old road signs that the system cant read, and the mortorist will have to pay for that too.

its just a totally ridiculous plan like most of the crap that comes out of europe.
 
I can't believe that the first thing we can choose NOT to follow after leaving the EU, the government have announced they'll follow the EU rules!

Kind of makes you wonder, as we agreed all the rules when we benefitted from membership as well. Not much point leaving, really....:ROFLMAO:
 
It would appear that the "black boxes" which come with this package will be more significant than the ISA (which will have an on/off switch anyway). If you have an accident they will be able to see what you've been up to.......
As I understand it the ISA will not physically intervene to prevent the driver from exceeding the speed limit but issue a warning. I have that on my Road Angel now!

If everyone's going at the same speed that isn't gridlock: it's smooth progress! Unless that speed's zero, in which case I'd rather the guy behind is also doing zero.....

Like smart motorways, where the reduced speed limit means you do a steady 40 instead of 80, followed by a 2-hour standstill whilst they clear an accident. These technologies aren't for people driving on deserted back roads, but for school zones or congested trunk roads.

Trouble is we all want to go faster than the next guy. That's why we see so much awful driving on motorways, so anything that stops the tailgating or lane-hogging idiots is fine by me! Speed is always contentious, but having a log in case of an accident is a great idea. Unless you caused the accident, I guess?

 
Trucks are all limited to the same speed now - and still manage to attempt to crawl past each other with a 1-2 mph differential based on different weight and drag, causing huge tailbacks. A practice know as "elephant racing” in Europe, where most countries banned HGV overtaking during peak hours, as well as complete HGV bans at weekends - two actually really good EU rulings that GB never adopted...
 
Apparently it can be overridden by foot in the floor to allow safe overtaking which was called for by a group of lobbyists and the main motoring organisations.

The death of the sports car, you never know they may leave us alone and our cars will be very sought after.
You can have the M4 sir at 55k or you can have the 318 model at 32k one looks nicer but they are limited to the same speed, sorry we don't sell the diesels anymore.
Or you can always opt for the scaleletrix model for 90k, it's very quick up to 70 mph but completely souless ??
