Hi everybody
Paid the deposit, hope to be the proud owner of a 96 993 targa tip S. by the end of next week Any info from those that have Targas or tiptronic cars would be gratefully received, particularly any problems with the roof or tip gears etc. The car is having a pre-purchase inspection this week, so anything to look for will be appreciated. Looks like the 968 sport will have to go, a fantastic car but just had to get over that 911 wanting feeling. Had an older 911 targa and missed that wind in the hair feel, the 993 has it but without getting out of the car, BLISS!!
Regards Steve B

good work...!

as for the roof, carry around some flexible tape and vaseline and you are good to go in all seasons.....

don't forget to post pics !

Hey Sundeep, I am a bit concerned that you carrry vaseline around with you! What do you use it for? I have a targa, but no vaseline.

Perhaps he smears it across the front of the car to stop the flies sticking when on track.

Hi Everyone
Well the car has today been to Steve Bull of Devizes Wiltshire for a pre-purchase inspection, and been given a clean bill of health, including the roof. He tells me that the tiptronic box is fairlly bullet proof. The colour is zenith blue, pictures to follow when i've picked the car up on the weekend ( hopefully) Any body else driving with tip? The car has also had new continentals and discs all round not many miles ago.Has anybody put 18in wheels on or are u happy with split rims, cant wait!!
regards Steve B

Steve,

Check out when the suspension was last changed, the standard Munro struts, don't last much more than 40K miles. It would be nice to know if they have been changed since new ? Otherwise it is £1000 for a new set all round. But most people tend to go for Bilsteins, if and when they need replacing. Look forward to seeing it next club night

Cheers
Charlie

I spoke to Steve Bull of Devizes and he assured me that the suspension was in good order, but could not say when it had been replaced. I live in hope. See you on club night
Regards
Steve

Stephen, I've had my Targa 4 months now & it's a fantastic car to own. (Touching wood) I've had no issues with the roof, so no need for vaseline. If this is your first air-cooled 911, don't get spooked (as I was) by a gurgling noise when you first start her up, it's just oil being returned to the tank.

As for the wheels - I believe that Cabs nor Targa were ever approved for 18" wheels, plus it's going to stiffen the ride & I think the split rim alloys look sweet anyway, but 911 ownership is such an individual thing.

Get some pics posted once you've got her.

Congrats.

Thanks Darren
It would seem that some love the split rims , and some don't . I will probably keep them as I like to keep the car in its original spec, as Porsche know best. But will have them refurbished. This is my 2nd 911 as I had a 911 sc a while back But the 993 is by far a better animal AND the last of the best (personal opinion) I look forward to joining the ranks of 993 owners. I will now have to sell my concours winning 968 which I have loved for the past 3 years. Ah well we move on, forever upwards!!
regards Steve B

Personally the thing that should be a priority is changing springs and dampers if they are still OEM, this will transform the car. Best place to get those is from Gert at Carnewal

This would then cover your first option of a geometry check.

Good luck

Damn good choice, Sam! Well done.

I'd definitely go for the geometry check - it made a huge difference to mine. Dunno about the springs and dampers thing - seems an expensive route to go if they're working fine as mine seem to be, but it'd be interesting to get some other views on this to guage opinion. Forget about the rattles and squeaks because they aren't going anywhere - just open the roof and listen to that engine (even better if you fit RSR's from Carnewal...!). Your stereo isn't going to be up to much and just changing the speakers will probably prove to be a disappointment. There are loads of options but if you don't want to spend stupid money then get new head unit, speakers and under seat sub woofer thingy such a sthe alpine SWD1600. This'll give you adequate bass where you probably won't have much from just the speaker and head unit change. If you move a couple of control boxes (alarm and something else, can't remember what (ABS maybe??)) under the drivers seat the Alpine will fit nice and snug right under you (but there's a metal mounting plate under there too which has to go if you go down this route).

I'd highly recommend the HID upgrade if you are going to use the car regulalrly at night as the headlamps are next to useless compared to most modern systems. I haven't done mine yet but it's on the to-do list. The clear lenses look good too and are relatively inexpensive.

Enjoy your car - I know you will! Let us know what you decide.

Sam,
Another welcome - you will not regret the choice of model.

Post a picture when you can.

I'm with the alignment suggestions (don't know about springs/dampers because I've not done this - yet). The alignment makes an amazing difference (if it's out) - and it's likely to be out unless you have evidence from the invoices that it's been done fairly recently.

...Dunno about the springs and dampers thing - seems an expensive route to go if they're working fine as mine seem to be..............

The reason about changing the suspension is that the original dampers (Munroes) fitted by Porsche are crap.

If you are new to a 993 it may feel OK as you get used to the car, but the truth is that it is either soft or very hard and not the compliant pointy feel as you push along A roads. The car is utterly transformed when proper dampers are fitted and then you can start to enjoy properly the joy of owning a 993.

HID's are also another thing to get done, but suspension is the main one.

Did you check when the clutch was last done?

William,
You have just spoilt your "Posts" count. I was about to suggest it was an ideal time for you to get back into a 993[:D]

On the springs/dampers front: If I do not want to lower the car or change handling from it's current, "fairly comfortable despite pot holes in Scottish roads" feel, what dampers/springs should I change to? I assume you changed them on your 993 - what did you get and did they lower the car?

Thanks
Mark

Mark,

My last 993 had M033 springs so was already lower than standard.

I fitted Bilstein HD's and H&R springs, this did not take it any lower than it already was, but I could gone a little lower if I had wanted. With this setup the car handled really well and stiffened things up so that it was a lot flatter in corners and I could carry more speed. For general use on our wonderful scottish roads was fine, this is why I went for this setup, did not want a track stiff car that shook the teeth out my head, although it is not recomended for driving on the Edinburgh cobbles[:D]

I got the kit from Carnewal and it arrived within 3 days. Gert who runs the place is also very helpful as well.

Would love to get back in a 993, but the reason it went was because of my left knee and had already had a tip 993 which was not as much fun as the manual[:(]

Roughly how much is the cost to change, William? I really can't complain about what's already on my car as it's reasonably compliant and yet wieldy already. I'd love to try one back to back with mine which has had the change - any volunteers?![;)]

Craig,

I did mine about two and half years ago but if you look on the Carnwal site that will give you todays price. Back then it was about £650 plus £200 for fitting
