New to Porsche, the forum so hi

Hi all, nice looking site, I have run the VPCUK (Volvo performance club UK) for the last 3 years so i am not new to the internet scene.

I have been looking for a project Porsche for some time and happened by chance to stumble accross a 944 S2 3.0 litre today in blue metallic, Just 8 miles from my home. It has cream leather, its a 1991 H reg.
The car has been stood in a field for the last 2 years and used as a dry store for all kinds of crap by a millionaire farm owner. I intend to restore her to her very best over the next year. Its a bit of a mess inside but drives fine apart from the following:

Juddery start as the clutch engages (is it a worn clutch/release bearing?)
Transmission seems to feel loose or not securely fitted, may also be the root cause of the above??

Other than that for her 133k she is quite well. I will try and get some pic's up later when she is clean (er) and look forward to some suggestions on the above. I do know how the search button works btw lol.

I'd start looking into the rubber centre of the clutch having broken up as a possible cause.

Hi.

One very important thing I've picked up in my year as a Porsche owner is - get the cam belts, rollers, chain etc done. There's quite a few sob stories around where people haven't done this in time. I guess it will be especially important for you car having been stood for a while.

Fen is right regarding the rubber centre of the clutch possibly breaking up. Unfortunately a clutch is one of the more expensive things to change on a 944 due to the amount of labour involved and the gearbox needs to come out also [:(] The gearbox mount could be the cause of your other 'loose' feeling so at least you could solve two problems in one go.

Main things to look out for are:

When were the cam and balance belt last changed? and also the water pump while you're in there
Has the camchain in the head ever been changed?
Has the gearoil been changed within the last 4 years

 
Yep all of the above. I hope you picked this up because you enjoy the restoration process as it could easily wind up costing you more than buying a sound one in the first place I'm afraid. There truly is no such thing as a cheap Porsche and the parts prices don't reduce in line with the car's depreciation.
 
Absolutely true wot Fen said. Your purchase sounds similar to mine (stood for a while, but cheap) and after replacing quite a few bits and pieces followed by the failed clutch - it soon adds up and I spannered all but the belt change myself.

That said, if you are able to do the work yourself then it's an interesting and rewarding (not financially) proposition.

Right i have been out there all day with her and done lots. First thing i needed to do was remove the plastic undertray that was dragging on the floor.

Then project clean up could begin, take the car back to the paint and remove all the field residue to see exactly what i have bought. The passenger footwell, driver and passenger seats were covered in oil, broken galss and old brake pads and disks.

That piece of trim is the drivers door pocket, the inside handle attaches to it so you can use it to shut the door.

Shafted as you can see, however with some simple re engineering, its now back in place securely.
I then decided to see if the electric removeable roof worked, it did so out it came, the seal is also good and doesnt leak even with a pressure washer directly on it

The last time she was taxed, however xmas 2005 was the last time she was run.

After 5 hours cleaning the outside started to show through the dirt

And the inside was transformed

The seats have been cleaned more after this and have come up slightly better, however this was just soap and water, as was the rest, that and elbow grease, no chemicals involved at all today.

Also found this whilst underneath, perhaps the root cause of the knocking and juddery clutch

The top arrow points to the anti roll bar, the lower is the rubber bush and housing it should be sat in

BTW i paid £800 for the car, is this good or bad ?
 
They scrub up nicely don't they [:)] It's the underlying quality of the components and materials they used back in Stuttgart when they put them together.

You'll possibly find more shrunken and dishevelled bits of rubber as you work round the car but once you replace them all the car will be transformed. Always try a Porsche Centre first for parts like this as the aftermarket places often charge a premium and fool the unknowing. A lot of us use Exeter Porsche Centre and deal with Chris in the parts department. He knows his way round the parts lists for our older cars and if you mention the club forum he will give a very good discount and generally free postage.

£800 will be a good price if you find no major nasties whilst getting her up and running. A truly mint S2 with excellent recent mechanicals, superb bodywork and a full service history will be worth £8k tops. A good and basically honest example will be circa £4k and a rattly, unloved lady with traces of rust will be under £1500
 
It doesn't look too bad - have you checked the sills for corrosion? If not do so immediately as you may find you want to break it rather than fix it if they are rotten. On the bright side it would break for a lot more than £800 if it came to that.

Assuming it isn't corroded excessively then it's probably a good enough buy - dependant on how well it scrubs up and what history it has to support the 133k miles it might be worth anywhere from £3k to £6k with MoT and tax. I doubt the clutch judder has anything to do with the ARB bracket, though you have found a potential knocking source. Those wheels are evil.

Thanks for the info for parts though, I will see what you think of the above first.

Prices for the car sound reasonable, i dont intend to sell her just yet, i have checked the sills, they are solid and rust free.

I think its a gearbox out and clutch replace, i have budgeted for this anyway, what should i be paying for a clutch fitted ?

The wheels are evil ???? Is that good or bad ? lol

No they dont have P6000's on, you have answered my last question.

I personally am not that keen, I may ebay surf for a replacement set, any suitable examples in jpg form i can see ?

Most Indies will charge between £800 - £1000 for a clutch. Its a £350 part plus a LOT of manhours labour [:eek:]

Thats fair advice, no one is perfect thats for sure, however i may give Chris a ring at Exeter, for major stuff and stick to the porsche shop for small items.

Does anyone know of any good specialists or dealers in the West Midlands that you have used or can recommend ?

If you're going to be buying parts from Porsche ( I use Exeter too), then it will be worth you joining the Porsche Club, as they will thne give you 10% discount. The money you'll save on the clutch alone will almost pay for the membership fee......
It can help to get discounted insurance too.

I cant find a contact number for these guys, does anyone have it please ?

Also i fancy a set of these alloys, will they fit and what are they called....i know so many questions :)
