New to Porsche, the forum so hi

Hmmm, ok. I think I'll change it all the same, just need a haynes book of lies and some bleeding knuckles now [:-]

£800 looks like a good price for that, do you know why it was abandoned all those years ago? If it was for a known fault, the farmer may know ...

Agree with the sentiments about cam belt and chain. The chain price is cheaper if it is all done at once, as you need to remove the belt to remove the cams to remove the chain (read that again - it does make sense!)

Another good place to find write-ups of common procedures is http://www.clarks-garage.com/. It has an american flavour, but you can read around that ...

Oli, i have no idea why it was abandoned, he had spent nearly £1000 3 months prior to it being left on brake lines, fuel lines, a new caliper and some other parts which escape me at this time, (reciepts at home) He has many vehicles inc a 996, range rover sport, 2 discoverys and a TVR. He must have just got bored with it. So much for farmers being skint and needing subsidies (no offence if your a farmer reading this)

Yes what you said does make sense, i had to read it again though lol,

Justin

Another question for you ... you run a Volvo enthusiasts forum and yet have just bought an S2?

What happened? A rare moment of lucidity overcame you? Seems like an odd change of course automotively ... 944's are actually fun to drive ...

All the best with the project!

Oli.

Lol, good question well presented.

Yeah i bought an ex police S70 T5 in 2000 and was bitten, there was no real Volvo scene as you can imagine on the net at that time so i bought a domain and went for it, since then Volvo have backed the site, we have changed with thier permission to what we are now called and it was a hobby. However i wasnt getting dirty so i am bored. A good pal of mine had bought a similar car some months ago for less than i did, it wasnt an S2 mind, and i have been drooling ever since. I have always wanted a Porsche, my father had several 911's etc over the years so i thought i was as good a car as any to have as a project, by chance this car came up through my pal and i handed over the money, i didnt even consider it to be honest.

Hence my background knowledge is being supplied by your good selves :):):)

Next question.....

Well I hope you get it back to its former glory. As Oli said, the 944 is great fun to drive, with the S2 giving great acceleration across the rev range. The turbos (or darkside...) must be fantastic to drive too, but I haven't driven one. Yet.

Forget the Haynes manual - waste of time. You can download the official Porsche workshop manuals online: http://www.eucc.dk/
Nice link - I didn't realise there were a couiple of manuals about the Cabriolet hood - they'll be handy for me. One sad note though: the end of life disposal manual. [:(] Lets hope we never need it. In fact, we should burn it on the barbeque at Ragley!

If the car hasn't had any cam chain service in 133k there is a very good chance it will need the whole lot replacing including cams. As I have said several times before you don't replace just the chain on a bike as a worn sprocket will just trash the new chain in no time and it has to be the same for the S2 cam chain.

You're looking at about £1k for the cams etc. - at least with my indie - exact price depends on the price of the cams from Germany as he gets then from the same place Porsche do without the markup.

Don't you have to have a monster first service with Hartech though, or is that just to go on their warranty-esque deal? Certainly they seem to have a good reputation though.

Where are Hartech based?

If you do need some cams, let me know. I have a contact who maybe able to get them cheaper than an OPC or an indy.

North West somewhere. I doubt you'll get cams cheaper than my indie, but let me know the price and I can check too.

Hi Fen, no - the monster first service is just to go on their lifetime maintenance plan. Even then, you don't have to have everything fixed at that service, it's just that anything you don't have fixed won't be covered.

They're just on the outskirts of Bolton, between the M61 and M65, so its a bit of a pig to get to from Coventry. They are very good though, they seem to get to know you as a customer, and they certainly know the cars! I was really impressed with the first service I got there, as I ended up with a huge report on the mechanics of the car (8 pages I think) where almost everything was classed as good. Gave me a nice warm feeling!

I will 2nd Hartech. Never had work done there but they have supplied me with a number of parts over the years. Always found them to be excellent in quality / service / knowledge and v.reasonable in cost. No complaints

Regards,

Ben

If Porscheshop is close by then so are www.twoplustwoltd.co.uk in Brierley Hill. They've worked on my Lux engine but usually have a busy workload so you may have to wait before they can see you. That in itself is a good recommendation.
