New Tyres

Thanks for the info Mike - sounds ideal for what I want. Everything getting a bit hairy on the run in to Christmas but certainly something to consider in the new year. Just thought - its my birthday in January and Laura is bound to ask at some stage what I might want........[:D][:D][:D]. Might have to bring her May birthday forward as well!!

Happy Christmas one & all

Charles

Welcome James,

I had Bridgestone S02s until a few weeks ago and, from my reading of posts here, the consensus seemed to be Michelin Pilot Sports. So I went for a set. First few miles they definately had less grip (when accelerating hard on tight bends - like leaving roundabouts) but have settled down nicely. Happy with them, but yet to see how they wear. Got about 11k miles out of the S02s, but I think I'm pressing the right pedal now more than I was...

Welcome....

I have Conti Sport N2 on......brilliant grip in all conditions.......

However...first set of rears lastet approx 4K.........had my geo set up at Tognola and this set seems to be lasting slightly better...however would be tempted to go for the Micheln jsut to see the wear rate !!!

I like p-zeros,but they do go "off" (loose grip)when they get 2/3 of age.
Ive heard good/bad reports about all the top brands,so i think you just need to find the best deal.
Pirelli/Conti/Bridgstone/Michelin&Dunlop.
My tyres and Black circles do fair deals.

Hi James,
I do not think you can call it consensus... it all goes to personal preferenses...
I used to have Pirelli P Zero on my Boxter and I found them very comfortable but wearing too fast..
I had Conti on my 993 first, but they were too noisy and too hard for me.
Now I have Michelin Pilot Sport and I find them the best so far. Good grip (overall), very comfortable and silent...

Cheers
Andrew

Hi James I have had both C4 & currently in a C2 - have tried most over the years and have to say for overall confidence, dry/wet handling and wear I believe P Zeros the best.. Contis to hard which results in handling and S02's just do not match the handling of the PZero in a 993 that is so sensitive tyres. That said I think the rate of ware is also good for a soft compound tyre, changing my rears after 18 months - 10k miles.. [:D]

I've tried Bridgestones (S-02 and S-02As) and they're fine and seem to last well. I've got Pirelli Zero Rosso's on at the moment and they seem to grip a bit better, but don't know how long they'll last. I don't cane it round bends that much (mostly motorway commuting).

I tried Michelin Pilot Sports on the front but they had worn illegally flat within 4K miles (within 3 months) so I won't try them again. It wasn't geometry, they were flat all over.

Despite having the geometry checked regularly at 9M (and it's always within tolerance) I find that the inside of the front two tyres wears flat quickly which is why I end up going through more front's than backs. After 5K this time I'll get them swapped over to even the wear and get a bit more out of them.

One place I will recommend - Event tyres. Seem to beat any local or online price. Plus they've got a mobile service which only cost £10 more than having them fitted in the workshop. A rogue screw popped a new front tyre 3 weeks after having it fitted, and was too close to the rim to have it repaired.

I'm a P0 Rosso convert myself - good, predictable grip in most conditions, great wear rate (set up is important for this), and you can get some good deals. My local place will just about price match Micheldever, so I'm happy...!

Cheers/John

What deals are available for PZero's? I'm going to need a pair for the rear very soon. 285/30/18 N4's.

I'm probably erring back towards the continentals, having had pzeros on the rear for a while now.

They seem a bit vague at speed compared to the continentals, everything else being equal.

At the risk of opening up the emotional "what tyres are best" topic.....

Some of you might recall that I've had problems with handling (bad tramlining, vague steering and twitchy rear (!), especially in the rain) for a while - even after a suspension upgrade, replaced wishbones, etc...

Just replaced the P-Zeros on my Targa with Continentals... wow!! Looks like this has fixed it!

Much much more stable at speed, feels generally less "fuzzy", and much more confident, especially at the rear... Much better in the rain too...

It's like someone bought me a new car!!

Woo Hoo!!

I've always gone with Contis - the handling, relatively low noise, longivity etc all suit my (non-track) use. They tend to be loads cheaper than the competition as well (£125 each fitted for the rears from).

Just about to take the car in for new tyres myself. P-Zero Rossos all round.

Current set:
fitted at 123k miles
Currently 139k miles

16K miles, I'm more than happy with that! Don't know if it was a rogue set that they shouldn't have released. I'm down to the legal minimum tread on the inside (about 3mm on the outside of the fronts) and it still has no problems with puddles on the motorway.
