New wheels :)

You might not like it, but even as someone who hate "purists", I think the wheels are totally wrong.

Your car is in a colour that's a bit more forgiving than the darker ones, but massive, lumpy alloys look awful. If you look at the pictures, ask yourself what you see? If the answer is the wheels, you've lost the overall design of the car.

To me, Porsches from the 80s are an example of how simple design, and proper engineering, put the big four German manufacturers at the top of the global tree, and why the designs were so copied by the emerging Japanese with cars like the Supra and RX7. Clean, simple lines, with no "jewelery" like chrome or unnecessary lines in the metal. If you try to make them something different, you ruin a classic design: it's like fitting an Eames chair with a floral cover from Plumbs. [:'(]

The exception is when performance mods are a real benefit, and the design has to change to accomodate them. See the 924 CGT or original Quattro: the vents and bulges are there for a reason.

Sorry, but fitting Boxster wheels on a 944 is as attractive as fitting 944 wheels on a Boxster to me. Spend the money on the originals.

996 wheels however . . . . .

:)

Strath44 , Thanks that is a great link ! I did think when I was fitting them that they were really light ! They are Turbo look I wheels ? Might be light weight hollow wheels ? I will try and get them weighed.

Looks great ! I might have my ones painted black ? What time are you at Oulton park this Friday ? I will nip round for a nosey ?
I need to replace the engine mounts on my S2 , got them ready to fit but is a bit of a nasty job to do ! Last ones I did on my 944 Turbo , I had full use of a two post ramp at work and a top engine support . I took the complete cross member off .
I have a lot of vibration coming through the steering rack as the exhaust manifold is touching on the union UJ part.
Labour of love ! Went out this evening and it just so Rejuvenating :)

At OP from about 08:30 until late afternoon.

The first thing I did after taking that picture was realign the headlight buckets, really must take another one as it bugs me every time I look at it!

jc,,car looks lovely,,new wheels are not for me and i think your other wheels suited the car much better but nice to have a choice once your d90s are refurbed as well,,,

or even Cayman wheels [:D]

These are all 8Jx17 ET40 and 9 kilos. They work really well visually and mechanically.

Although I have to say that the OP's wheels are not to my taste - they don't even look good on a Boxster.

Personally, and it is all down to what you want to look at on your drive every day, I'd prefer a set of CS wheels or something to yours, which are nicer than the ones above, but they aren't "right" to look at IMO.

Of course, your car is more about performance than show, and if the wheels add to that then it's a good thing. Certainly didn't feel too slow to me! [:D] I always think that something that adds performance is a good mod, a huge bonnet scoop or wrong wheels that don't add anything are a waste.

Hi Edh , I think your 944 looks well mate and I have said before that I really liked how it first looked when you first bought it .
I had the same Cayman wheels fitted to my old 944 Turbo after I sold the 18inch BBS Classic split rims. I bought the set for 220 with tyres , not a scratch on them , I had to replace all the tyres as the Cayman tyres look like they are for off road buggy's.
My old 944 Turbo is the anti Christ for purists !

There are bits of the anti-Christ I'm not keen on, but in that third photo (the front-on shot) it looks perfect. (The Cup mirrors in particular work so well with the blistered front arches.)

Thanks mate , every time I look back at the pictures of my old 944 Turbo it brings a tear to my eye .
Brand new front fog driving lamps £220 each side , front splitter £250 , full paint bonnet , bumper £250 , 924 Turbo bonnet £100.
968 Cup Mirrors £350 . Notice the front 911 big bolster seats £500 for the pair ! 968 tailgate £350 . BBS 18inch classic £1000
Koni CUP Coilover front struts bargain second hand £300 rears £250.
That 944 Turbo stood me at 12k and after I blew the engine it went to Prague for £2800 without the BBS wheels .
It was a real bad Vice at the, I went total OCD on that beauty.
Never look back ;)

The BBS wheels are the dogs! Love to get a set for mine.
IMHO, D90's are grey porridge and really let the car down.
Some later wheels work better than others. I don't think Cayman wheels look nice at all but Boxster wheels, if simple, can lift the whole appearance of the car for not much cash.
As for the wheels that started this riot...have we seen them on the car yet??

Hi , the wheels that started the 2014 riots ! Can be seen on the first few pictures . One single wheel with black and my S2 with them on ?
They are 17inch Porsche Boxster wheels . The BBS 18inch wheels were on my old 944 Turbo and also seen with 17inch Cayman wheels twin spoke .
I do like the D90's and also the 944 Turbo wheels slightly different pattern Forged wheels .
I bought a set of late D90's 944 Turbo wheels for my old Turbo , and the rears were a lot wider than standard D90 wheels ?
My favourite wheels must be the BBS Split rims wheels .

We all wear different cloths , eat different food and fancy different wheels , this is what makes the world go round ;)
