Newbie-just bought 1986 2.5 lux

ORIGINAL: PSH
All the best and good luck with the car , one thing I can say is once you have it running and set up properly you'll learn to love it and fully appreciate what a wonderful car the 944 is....[:)][:)]

Pete
Thanks for the advice Pete. I'll see about the oil breathers. To be honest I think the sender has had it, rather than there being any meddling, as the previous owner knew little about cars and just took the car to JZMachtech who seem to be reputable Porsche specialists in Kings Langley (saying that, it was they who filled it with magnatec).

It's being MOT'd today, and I'll discuss the engine with the guys at Kirkmans, at lunchtime.

I already love the car. Drove out to Chatsworth House yesterday evening and the handling is terrific on the twisties. [:D]
I have to keep the windows up though, or else my chest feels like I've smoked a pack of twenty B&H in the space of an hour.[:'(]

haha.. been there mate.. as suggested earlier in this thread check the rear hatch seal , may also be worth checking the hatch pins to see if they are pulling the hatch tight enough. 944's suffer from exhaust fumes if theres a problem with the hatch due to the aerodynamics of the car , this would be the case even when brand new so it's worth checking the rear hatch before thinking it's a tired engine....[:D]

Pete

oh nearly forgot , blocked breathers can also cause both the smoke and the fumes so check those. This can also cause oil leaks due to crank pressure building to high.. there are so many things to check on these cars before condemming a given part.

Welcome to 944 ownership... it's worth it believe me...[:)]

JZ always use Magnatec, I think they have a deal with Castrol for their range of products. I always used to use Magnatec (I think they started me off with it) and it seemed fine, but then I didn't have to clean up an engine afterwards!

I've just ordered some of new Gulf oil, must admit I was swayed by the colour of the packaging to some extent! [;)]

My neary 200k mile S2 did 100k miles on Magnatec without issue when it was maintained by JZ Machtech. I believe that regular oil changing with any sort of oil is much more important than brand (Apart from Spry Crisp n Dry of course [;)] )

Halfords have a special on Mobil at the moment. 5 ltrs of whatever we are told to use, is it 15/50 semi, for £20.

really?.... wow... hope it runs for a few weeks so I can stock up....[:)]

Bother, that's a brilliant deal! Not sure the Gulf logo and colours are worth that premium... Think the other car will get a treat of Mobil one then, as that's too much of a bargain to miss out on.

hmmm.. Paul I think you mean 20% off... which = £38. [:)]

No......£38 was about what Opie wanted with Club discount and adding in very high P&P. As I was going to Staples to buy some envelopes, and Halfords is next door to Staples, I thought I'd pay the little extra I imagined they'd want - largely to avoid the muppet of a postman refusing to leave it inside the porch without a signature. (I said porch, I don't leave the car open for deliveries. [:-])

No price on the "special" display, when I got to the till I gave them my card. The total was £19.99, I gave them a £20 note and put the change in the charity tin in order to change the world. I then hesitated at the security scanner, felt guilty and ran like hell. [&:]

This was last week, at Halfords in Hemel Hempstead. I can't guarantee it's still there, but I'm kicking myself that I didn't buy the lot.

I think you got lucky mate.. according to their website it's 20% off at £38... it may be that the wrong code was put in or the wrong price given to the correct code/... either way.. good for you ...[:)][:)][:)]

I'll be queuing there tomorrow at opening time.....[8|]

I've even managed to get a pic of my HPE 2000ie (YEW 931Y) in Porsche Post August 2009, with my old 1600 Berlina (SYB952W) in the background, taken summer 1988 I think!

My first 1600 HPE Midnight blue PHK 608R was unusual, 1 piece headlights Mk1 but Mk2 interior and lots of other "wrong" combinations!

Rear turrets went, you could look up into the rear wheel arch and see out through the side window!

I sold it for scrap but the guy spent 5 days welding it back together as it was better than his wifes that he'd hit a gatepost with and broken a headlight (£110 then '86) and bent the wing!

Still have damaged thumb from that car!

Mike

Here's an update -

Got the car back yesterday - being without it 2 weeks affected my psychology[&:]

Good news is 12 months MOT, and engine replaced - and still within my budget.[:)]

Oil pressure appears fine, but there is an idling issue which I'll post separately about.
The only other issue concerning me right now is exhaust gasses leaking into the cabin - will also post separately about this too.

Hope to get out and about now and properly enjoy driving it!
