For what its worth there's a 997 in the Herald classifieds today just above your budget

Hi Richie ,

It depends how fussy you are about spec etc , there is a huge range of options available from new , some disirable and some not so but all add to the overall performance / appearance / disirability and cost of the car.
I am very fussy about spec , it took me possibly about 2 years to get the right car at the right price , finally got a 2006 Cayman S , looked at all sorts of 996 and 997 . guess it depends if you want buy into the 911 ledgend or not , I felt the Cayman S was a good value Porsche , for the price of a 2006 Cayman S with a good spec you would get perhaps a 2003 /4 996 S / 4S .
Anything you need to know about Cayman spec let me know as I did a lot of research , even got the original sales book for the car .
Worth a note while you will pay more for your car from an official porsche centre they are now offering a 2 year warranty on used cars , plus the coffee and shortbread is great [:D] should be at PC Nov 6th if you want a look at my car also Im sure many other members will be happy to give any advise you need - never know some of the cars may be for sale.

I can understand why folk get excited about speccing up a Porsche, but allow me to offer the reverse arguement.

I wanted the pleasure of owning my Cayman from new, but had a limited budget, so I opted to buy it with almost no options at all. In fact all I added were heated seats (my wife's choice) and cruise control (to help preserve my licence), and these added only a few hundred pounds anyway. No big wheels, no leather seats, no BOSE, no satnav, no metallic paint, no automatic suspension ... just a plain simple sports car. If you are buying a Panamera, or even an expensive Carrera, I can see why you want it dripping in all the latest fancy gadgets, but somehow this seems wrong on the Cayman. Bereft of all this stuff it arguably feels even more "Porsche-like", almost retro feeling, the way they used to make them. There is that old chestnut that you need the spec to re-sell it, but then I plan to keep mine indefinitely, so who are you speccing the car for? ... you or the next owner?

You are also more than welcome to give my car a once over, if you would like to see what a very simple Porsche looks like.

Richie, I was out at Pheonix in Paisley at weekend and they have a Silver Caymen '07 think it was 25k, might be worth a look or maybe just a test drive to get idea of what they're like,
Alan.

In Saturday's Dundee Courier, I noticed two things. A very low mileage 996 for sale privately, and West End Honda in Broughty Ferry have a Cayman S which they have just reduced in price.

Hi mate,

I recently switched from 2003 STi Spec C to 987 S and if you were to compare the 2 cars it would be like comparing apples and oranges - they are two different beasts.
Funny thing was I never drove the STi in a flamboyant manner but rather treated like a garage queen - something that Porker may deserve more?

It is common to create misconceptions and make people generalise that you are a 'boyracer' when they begin to hear the roar of the boxer engine two blocks away.
This generalisation instantly vanishes when you jump into a porker.
