Newbie saying Hi (and needs assistance with his 944!!)

Oli it actually screws into the oil filter/cooler housing. Have a look at the relevant bit of manual.

Finally got it all back together, new oil cooler seal kit, filter and oil. Checked the PRV - that seemed ok and nothing else set off any alarm bells so i fired it up. No problems - good oil pressure (just under 5 bar) no leaks, bangs or unexpected oil showers, looks like i got a cheap motor.
I followed the clarkes garage procedure but did not remove the PAS pump, i just took the exh manifolds all the way off and loosened the jubilee clip on the PAS reservoir and moved it out of the way to get the oil cooler out from above - much easier than laying on your back IMO.

A couple of things though, tickover seems high and never dropped when the engine got to running temp. is this easily adjusted? (I have seen a handy adjuster and locknut under the throttle arm but have resisted temptation the play with it in case its a mixture problem).

I'm also tempted to question the accuracy of the rev counter but i will check this against an external device at a later date.

Finally any recomendations for a proper decent set of replacement speakers for the doors, normally i would use infinity but their 5x7's are thin on the ground and i'm unsure whether they would fit anyway. as it stands i have put a Kenwood 4ch amp in the RH boot recess and going to put a set of 6x9's in the rear boot corners but if anyone else has some ideas or experience of an install photos or info would be appreciated

Not sure you'd get bigger than 6 x 4 in the doors,it's damn tight in there!
The rear panels can accommodate a bigger speaker than the 6 x 4 they have at the mo.
As for tickover I'd suggest a pipe off giving an air leak, don't twiddle things except as a last resort.

Dave,

Glad it is all working. They are pretty robust bits of kit, so it takes a fair amount to kill them. If you got yourself a cheap usable 944 then that's very good news - enjoy it!

Speakers - 6x4 is the size for the front doors. There are various ones for sale on eBay, and a thread on here a while ago about them - search is your friend. Having said that, I bought some which should fit but don't - I had to make some spacers to space them out from the door slightly, and it's not a very pretty arrangement. I meant to revisit them when the weather got a bit warmer and sort them out, but never did ... ho humm ...

Oli.

Yes 6x4 is the door speaker size i was getting my jumbers numbled!! with the lack of decent speakers for this size i may be tempted to try some 6x9 in an under dash mounting situation but in regards to previous threads reference using amps against just head units and speakers i would definately recommend it, i even use an amp in my van rather than just a head unit straight to speakers, much much better!!!

Nobody said don't use an amp [8|]. My point was the original 20 year old amp fitted as part of the "hi fi" kit will not be worth using.

You're the first I've ever heard suggesting there are "decent" 6x9s to be had, I though car audio people looked down their nose at them.

Fen, my reference to the use of amps was actually in full support to the comments you had made in the other thread, i'm sorry if my use of words didn't let this come across.....

In refernce to 6x9's then yes i'm sure many car audio people would look down their noses at them, but in the context of my 944 with very little space for rows of componant speakers/subs and very little money to throw at it then 6x9's will be fine for me - the car is only a toy (to me) after all.

I'm not wanting a bespoke audio set up but the fitted speakers are absolutely shot and would need to be replaced at the very least, so I may as well give it a slight quality boost while i'm doing this. I don't have a lot of money to throw around, in fact all the gear is second hand and i will make all the speaker boxes/fitments/wire it all in myself.

Taking the price/value of the car into account i think this is the best option. If i hadn't bought it, this particular 944 would have been in a scrapyard by now. I'm just trying to keep another 944 on the road for me and hopefully a few owners after me.

On a happier note my eldest dragged it out of the garage and give it a good wash yesterday, followed by a going over with a colour restoring compound - its come up surprisingly well, roll on summer!!
