Newbie with 944 project

Totally with you on the rust remedies.
V. impressed with the welding and fabrication on what is a really tricky shape, lovely job!

If you are looking for some quality stone chip to replace the factory covering, I can highly reccomend this 3m stuff:

http://www.consumablesexpress.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000002.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2econsumablesexpress%2eco%2euk%2facatalog%2fSealers%2ehtml&WD=sprayable%20sealer&PN=Sealers%2ehtml%23a3M08800#a3M08800

Unlike most sealers its a 2pack mix that sets to a really tough, resilliant coating - ideal for behind the front wheels. Its not cheap but one sachet will easily do the area you need. Only slight downside is the 'flash off' time; when I used it for my fuel tank last summer it needed at least 24hrs.

Thanks for that link. I'm assuming you mean the "Sprayable Sealer 250ml Bag Ref: 3M08800" shown on that page.

I had planned to re-do the entire stone chip area on both sides (along the sill area I mean). This has proved to be a tricky one for me. I've been told never to spray two-pack without a proper respitory mask, so I have been struggling to find the correct product to use here. Someone mentioned Gravitex - which can be sprayed with a shutz gun, but I'd still need to over paint it in two pack paint so I'm in the same boat.

I had thought of using black Gravitex and not over painting it. It would make a neat job, but It wouldnt look 100% factory as this area should be gloss black.

Yes, thats the one. I assumed, as you mentioned taking it to a bodyshop, you were planning on going with 2 pack anyway.

I would strongly reccomend an air fed mask and suit for 2 pack. 3m do sell some disposable filters that are supposed to be up to the job. However you do hear stories about the stuff being absorbed into the body via skin and eye sockets.

At this time of year, unless you have a dry warm garage with a good extraction + filter system, I'd be tempted to find a body shop or hire a booth.

Here's a few more pics of my progress.

The headlamp covers and badge panel had suffered 125K miles worth of stone chips so I've decided to prep these for paint (to be done along with the front wing). Doing all the prep myself keeps the cost down [:)]

My car looking quite sorry for itself [&:]

I supose this is going to turn into a half re-spray job. Both front wings, one rear quarter, badge panel, headlamp covers and door mirrors. The remnaining panels are good and should look as good as new with a few stone chips sorted and a machine polish. The aim is to have the bodywork looking mint [:)].
