Just an update on this.
I went to Stratstones in Amersham on Saturday with my wife just to have a look at the V8 Vantage as they had a pre-owned one at the lower end of my price range.
The build quality was very very good, but as an approved used car it was disappointing to see the interior (seats) were scuffed and in pretty poor condition for a 33k miles car. (06) plate. Granted it was cream leather.
Seats from 2007 are different and I'd much prefer the later type.
The salesman encouraged me to start it, and to rev the engine to 4k revs!
Bear in mind that the engine is cold, I thought to myself, why is he asking me to do this?! Can't be doing the engine much good!

I'm also now considering a 997 turbo with a sports exhaust that has received good reviews.

I'm going to the Maserati dealership near me too, so lets see what happens there, but I might still stay in the Porsche fold!

You knew you would !!!!

Enjoy the looking around though Hasan it is always good to confirm what we all know by assessing the competition once in a while

Hi Hasan,

First of all I think met the salesman that suggested you rev the engines to 4K when cold! He's only just joined them from Land Rover would you believe! Bit of a knob I must admit. Yes I did buy my Vantage from them, mainly because the original owner had just that week traded it in, so I got it pre to many test drives from this idiot plus a really good deal before they had to advertise it.

Like you, before I committed to the V8V I had been looking around at many cars mainly Porsche Turbo's etc, and I had about ÂŁ60k in my pocket to play with. I was surprised how many Porsche Turbo's were on the market in the same condition as the V8V you looked at a Amersham, basically poor ! Please dont get me wrong, I loved my Boxster and my 911, but like you I wanted to look at something different and to move up in the brand.

Like Porsche, Aston Martin are not stupid. When they launched the Vantage they targeted the Turbo owners with the V8V and not the generic 911 C4/C2 non turbo clientele, you dont get a good Vantage for todays basic Turbo money.

New, todays V8V is a ÂŁ100k plus machine, same as the Porsche Turbo. Good used V8V's are around the plus ÂŁ60k as are good 911 Turbo's. Be careful buying a cheap turbo. The ones I looked at were very often owned by people that could not afford to run them, and had poor service history and were run on a limited budget etc etc .... remember the old saying "monkeys and peanuts"

The trouble with Porsche ownership nowadays, its now in the reach of the everyday man, as is the bottom end of the Vantage market, which sounds like what you looked at with Amersham. These owners also have kids to run !! You need to pay considerably more money to get a good Turbo and a Vantage in todays market.

Like I said, I might come back to the Porsche brand one day, I loved both my cars, but not how Porsche treat their used car owners. The VAG Group dont see the old Porsche owners in the same light any more. VAG only want new sales. todays Porsche dealers only offer poor warranty unreasonable requirements, and poor after-sales etc etc ........ From my findings I dont see this with Aston Martin.

Have fun finding your dream machine .................. Mike

Hi Mike,

Imagine the travesty of Porsches falling into the hands of everyday man, God forbid. And good Turbos only being available from ÂŁ60k+.....what about all those lovingly cared for (and well maintained) 911, 993, 996 and 997.1 examples available anywhere from mid ÂŁ20k to mid ÂŁ50k ? Generic C2 / C4 clientele....I am sure you didn't mean any offence here but it really doesn't read well from where I'm sitting. It also doesn't fit with the club motto of "For owners of Porsches from ÂŁ400 to ÂŁ4m" (or something like that) [&:]

Also for the record, my OPC has never delivered anything but exceptional after sales service (etc.). And I'm sure this is more the normal situation given what I hear from other Porsche owners (and also what I read on this and other forums).

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, however I would like to think there is still a place for "Everyday man" in Porsche ownership and in PCGB [;)]

Regards,

Doug.

Mike

In my view there are a number of real benefits from Porsche ownership and PCGB, take companionship, trips to Le Mans spring to mind, 997 weekends where we get the opportunity to drive properly (sensibly) with like minded folk, These cars offer real performance, good reliability and a reasonable cost to maintain and run them. Try comparing the above to Ferrari or Lambo ownership.
I have had reason to deal with 3 OPC's and all have been very good as per Doug's comments with no reason to complain YET.
I hope you enjoy the V8V and that it proves to be reliable, one thing for certain is it will sound a lot nicer than the turbo.

Good luck with it and hope to see you back soon, as suggested before I know someone with a nice Turbo S cab unfortunately a little more than ÂŁ60K.

Geoff.

Those Maseratis are gaining popularity in Europe .
I believe they are very reliable and they sound fantastic.
I do not know how anyone can say a Porsche sounds good
With the possible exception to a Kn with after market exhausts ...

I don't know what the new 991 Turbos will sound like, but the 991 C2S sounds awesome with sports exhaust switched on, it's a massive lap from the 997 in the soundtrack dept. [;)]

Had a 991 a couple of weeks ago. Agree with Russell, sounds great and a big step up in terms of acoustics ( and a number of other areas too).

My 991C2S with sports exhaust sounds awesome. I had many positive comments from fellow travellers on the recent SW- 997 trip (organised by Clive and Allan).

Here, here! Same with me, sounded great from behind

I test drove a Cab just over a week ago for a day and took it through the Hindhead Tunnel (nice and long if you don't know it) with the roof down and the noise was AWESOME!
If you could see the smile on my face.

I had lots of cars [:D]

Everyone should have at least one Ferrari.

I have had four.

But they are like a love affair:

When the wow factor wears off you get to think about the downside, the bits you very conveniently previously ignored... the size, the running costs, the unreliability, the attention it receives (previously flattering, later a downside)

I swopped my mint F430 Spider for a very basic 2.7 981 Boxster... no comparison ! Am I pleased? you bet I am. [:D]

Not too bad Captain but such a Tinny note compared to a V6 or V8
I guess it is down to the flat six engine and however you tinker with the
Exhaust system it wont play the music of the V engines
You only have to listen to a race Renaut or Peugeot To know what i mean
Not to mention the M/Mc L
