NineMeister Supercharger for your S2

Yep, the hardware will be done by Ollie (he always seemed keen when we discussed supercharging previously, I'll soon sort that out!).

Hi Peter,

Is Oli running Fern and Ashley's Ninemeister 968? I know that they used Auto 2000 for the previous one, but it rings a bell.

If so, he is pretty well aquainted with the supercharger.

DME ? No I havent. Will get Oli to get me one if you think its worth a try?

Without knowing the exact symptoms I wouldn't want to make any promises, but I'd definately ask him about trying a DME relay, it's well worth a go (and really is a spare that every 944 owner should have in their car). If you need to swap any further electrical bits just let me know as the guys can borrow mine for a few hours if it helps.

Hi Paul,
I've not seen the 968 there, but know that Ollie has talked about it. Somewhere here I have some pictures that were taken a few years ago of the engine bay on that car which I'm sure will be very useful, but I hope to bump into the owners and see if I can have a proper look around it one day.
Best regards,
Peter

I think you'll find that several 944 owners carry a spare DME.

You can borrow mine at the rolling road day if it helps diagnose a problem.

Oli.

ETA: Should any be confused, I am NOT the Oli who is aquainted with superchargers, so not the chap mentioned in your original post.

I'll check with Fern and Ashley, I'm sure they'll be happy to let you nose around either at it's lodgings near me, at a track they're doing or when it's in the shop.

Thanks for the offer Oli - But I ordered one this morning as I'm prepared to try anything to get it sorted and as you say everyone carries a spare just in case.
Im desperate to get this sorted prior to a week saturday otherwise there wouldnt be much point in me attending. Heres hoping I fix the issue [8|]!

Thanks Paul that would be really useful, I think there one has a different blower but I'm sure there are a lot of things I can learn from the installation.

I tried a new DME as you suggested Peter, took it for a blast around the country roads for a few mile and just as I thought the issue was fixed it happened again ![] The only way I can explain it is that between 3&4k RPM it just goes flat, the engine grumbles coughs and splutters and then its like a turbo kicking in and then we are flying again. Any advice would be really appreciated !

Bu**er, I hate intermittent faults like that. Sorry, I don't have any useful suggestions, personally I'd just keep swapping electrical things till you make some progress. I do have an old air flow meter here somewhere that's spare if you need to try one, although I'm not sure if that's a likely culprit.

Intermittant faults are a bugger to trace ... always.

From what you say, it could be electrical or fuelling. Is there any circumstance when it is worse? When under load, when at a constant speed, when accelerating, when it is wet/dry, when the lights are on? Does it happen more when the engine is cold or hot?

Swapping bits is a means diagnosis, but is time-consuming and expensive. Having said that, when did you last change the HT leads, plugs, dizzy cap and rotor arm? Also, how new is your fuel filter? And did the problem start after some event? (For instance, did it start when you last serviced it, or last did a track day, or something like that?)

Oli.

Hi Oli
There are circumstances when its worse, Sunday afternoon after the heavy rain It was running as rough as a badgers behind. But there have been occasions when its been nice and warm and the same occurs. Happens when hot and cold. Dipping the clutch allows the engine to rev freely. The stuttering and lack of power is between 3&4k rpm.
The fuel filter was replaced on a full service in March along with the fuel lines to the filter and the spark plugs, serious amounts of work happened at the same time to get it road safe ( just over £3K looking back at the invoice[:(] ) Since then Ive had a top end rebuild after a hole appeared in the head and for the first week or so of having it back all was well. But I would have no idea when the HT Leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm were replaced, if ever ? Is it worth doing anyway just for piece of mind, any idea on cost ?
Regards
Andy

It probably is worth replacing your HT leads and dizzy cap and rotor arm. I'm a big advocate of pro-active maintenance and I replaced that lot a few months ago and was shocked at the condition of the HT leads. The insulation which looked perfectly fine visually basically crumbled in my fingers when I removed them they were so oxidised. I had noticed no adverse effects when driving but based on the condition it was only a matter of time. Dizzy cap and rotor arm were not too bad though. Cost was about £120 or so for everything.

A bit of a tip for you. Call out the RAC or AA. I had an issue when my car wouldn't start intermittently and after hours and hours trying to suss out the problem I eventually called out the RAC and the chap diagnosed the problem within 20 mins. It was a loose reference sensor. A quick nip up with the spanner and she's not missed a beat or failed to start since.

Andy,

Hmmm. I'd probably be with Scott and suggest new cap, arm and leads. But this isn't terribly scientific - it's just the "replace things that are old" method, which may or may not hit the spot.

Ideally, find someone who is good at diagnostics, and ask them to examine it. They would use an oscilloscope to look at the spark the plugs are producing, as well as the output from other sensors on the car (crank/flywheel sensor etc) and find the problem that way. Given the recent work done on the car it is unlikely that it is a fuelling problem, but not certain.

Sorry, I can't help much more - internet diagnostics are vague at the best of times.

Oli.

If you need a new reference/speed sensor i've a brand new one I bought when I was having my intermittent starting problem. I was going to replace it anyway as I suspected the reference sensor however once the RAC guy diagnosed that it was just a loose reference sensor I consigned the part to my shelf for future use. The speed and reference sensor are the same part with the same part number by the way so you can use it in either location.

Andy,

If you are going down this route (trying new bits) then you could do with a friend nearby with a similar car to swap bits off. This would save a load of money.

Whereabouts are you? Oxfordshire ... will you be at the rolling road day next weekend? Could be a good chance for a bit of swappive-diagnostics (technical term there, I hope you noticed it.)

Oli.

Oli - Im now in Buckinghamshire about 5 miles south of Aylesbury.
Yes I am going to go to the rolling road day. And would be grateful for any help and assistance to try and get to the bottom of the problem.
Scott - I dont know wether I would need that part (is it the same for an S2) but would be grateful if you could bring it along next weekend just in case.
I will get new HT leads,Dizzy cap and arm sorted this week just to eliminate that possibilty. The Car is going to RPM on Monday to have the engine bay steam cleaned to remove the soot caused by my little fire after the cylinder head went and for them to have a look over it.
Regards
Andy
