Nitrogen Fill - One for the Boffins

Clive

I dont mean to be picky but I hope we dont fill our tyres with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) . I think it is plain simple Nitrogen ie N2 which is chemically inert whereas NO2 is quite toxic.

I think the reason that N2 filled tyres do not require topping up is that the nitrogen molecule is quite large when compared to oxygen and water which can permeate the rubber.

Looked back through the posts Jonathan and think Clive only mentions N2! Of course we could try N2O but that would just be for a laugh.........[:D]
I would be interested to know how pure the N2 might be after 2-3 fills/purge cycles. Short of sucking out the residual there will always be a certain amount of air in the mix?

Thats very strange because on my emails from I definitely saw NO2 but miraculously on the above posts I now see NO!.

"I do speak from experience as I've used N02 in my tyres exclusively for the last 4 years, in turbo, GT2 and Scuderia. There's no question in my mind nitrogen is much better. The principal point is that frequent topping up is not required as pressure is better maintained. I had my Ferrari for 2 years and only topped the tyres up once."

I think we should all have a laugh or maybe a little moderator editing [:D][;)]

NO2 lads?

It's nothing to laugh about!

Filled the tyres with oxygen free nitrogen from a bottle, set the regulator to about 50psi and then bled them down to 10psi before refilling 3 times to try and flush them out.

Finally set the pressure with an accurate gauge.

One point to watch was that even though on the day of the fill it was 19 DegC in the garage - when I checked the pressures a day later (garage at 20 DegC) they had gone up by almost 2 psi.

When you take the nitrogen out of the bottle it is noticable that the bottle gets pretty cold - so you are filling the tyres with abnormally cold nitrogen gas.

You need to check the pressures again after everything has warmed up to 21 DegC.

Lets hope Spain is hot enough to warrant the hassle
