Hi All
smile.gif

Just had a slight Nitrous explosion lol
smile.gif

Not Nitrous kits fault...was me and my son....
smile.gif

It blew back through the plenum and back up through the MAF...blew the air filter casing into tiny little bits lol and a few other bits got damaged..

Will probably have to replace throttle plate but wont know until Sunday afternoon when I take off the Plenum....

If anyone else runs Nitrous ,,,,dont accidentally hit the arming switch while there is gas in the pipes, while working on the engine...and then touch the throttle micro switch lol..

But engine is still running...thanks to Adrian Clarke and John Speake for the advice I needed

Will let you know if any further damage in next couple of days

Once its fixed ,will increase from 100 hp to 150 hp I think

Hi All
smile.gif

Engine was running at 4000 tickover after NOS explosion...

So today I stripped off the plenum and throttle body to see the throttle plate....

The left hand side of plate was bent down around 30 degrees lol...so as I looked down I could see a half inch gap instead of no gap with engine off
smile.gif

Soooo....kept stripping down until I could remove the throttle body...(not fun ,take my word)

Put body in vice and with a pair of snap-on high torque pliers..I bent it back straight..then rubbed down the rough edges with wet/dry...etc

Not a perfect job.but will do until I get a new air filter casing to try mixture etc...

Does anyone know which way the 3mm mixture allen key on MAF works ?

Is it screw OUT for richer or IN ???

Put it all back together....and it now runs ok ish...

not great but ok...about 100 revs fluctuation at tickover and a little "fluffy" at low revs but under hard throttle is fine...

No nos YET LOL...

All the best Brett

Hi ALL :)

5TH September ...update...

Now running 150 hp jetting....truly amazing power now....and all at the flick of a switch...

No more explosions lol...

Am now "growing" my own plugs as I call it....

This means grinding OFF the top of the side electrode (AS PER - WIZARDS OF NOS BOOK)....so my plugs from a side view look like a number 11 ...

The reason for this is that at high jetting with Nitrous (over 100 hp) the plugs can act as a glowplug and ignite the Fuel/Nitrous mix and burn holes in pistons...

Am about to fit a couple of laser lights into dash so ..I KNOW when Nitrous is running....the little lights in tips of switches are not good enough and unreliable...

Have also fitted 18 x 10 996 wheels on back and 7.5 x 18 wheels on front...

The idea being that I needed the extra traction as almost none with standard 7 x 16 wheels...

I can still spin the wheels with the 18 s on but MUCH better traction now :)

23rd September will put the car on dyno again with 150 hp jetting.....Surrey rolling road ...TVR versus Porsche day....with a trophy for highest HP on the day....

All the best Brett :)

Brett thats gotta be fun! Well done for having the balls to do it!! [:)][:)][:)] Where can you go next? Can you take it any higher or will it go bang?

I would love to supercharge mine at some point but I'd want to make sure the engine and box were 100% before I did it! Not to mention the cost!!

Llew [:)]

Hi Brett, I love following this story, good on you. Sounds amazing, Where's the rolling road - would love to see the car in action.

keep at it, Phil

Hi Llew :)

Yes I will go higher...

I will increase by 50 hp a time...then dyno...etc...then another 50....

heheheheh...

All the best Brett :)

Hi All :)

Another update...10th September...

Fitted 2 Laser Led Lights into dash....The switch Leds in the Nitrous Arming switch was not reliable...
Now when I arm the Nitrous a Blue laser lights up......not only do I know the Nitrous is armed but at night so does everyone within a few hundred yards lol :)
These new Laser LED lights are VERY strong...

I also fitted a RED laser for my kickdown switch arming...

Next I wired in my Nitrous bottle heater....you need a heater to bring the bottle and Nitrous up to pressure... (think small electric blanket - wrapped around the bottle)

Ideal pressure is 950 psi...which it now reaches in around 10 minutes of heater activation....the bottle heater draws 30 amps and my Remote laser thermometer says that the outside of the bottle is now at 178 F....(at hottest point ...just under edge of blanket)

Once all wired ...I then went to a quiet local flat road to try a couple of launches with full pressure which I had not had before...

Well......the extra temperature/pressure give an enormous amount of extra power....

I was amazed.......

I launched with my kickdown switch activated...so it launched in first....the car instantly went sideways lol....straight onto other side of the road....I straightened it an eventually got it back onto my side....there is a very nice S of black tyre marks going from one side of road to other and back now....lol..about 50 yards long :)

I tried one more launch with kickdown switch NOT activated...so it launched in second....slightly better traction....but heard a miss on a plug....so abandoned testing until new plugs fitted in next couple of days...with the way I alter my plugs they dont last long and wasnt risking a hole in a piston....

With the extra power from correct pressure...and IF I can get enough traction....I am fairly confident it will now easily run a 12 second quarter.....even possibly an 11...with a 0 - 60 mph of around low 4 seconds....

Dyno in couple of weeks ....I am going to run several runs....both without heating at around 600 psi and with heating at 950....

I confidently expect after today to see a BIG increase in HP and TORQUE ...with the 950 psi...

All the best Brett :)

Keep at it mate, I love what you're doing. Willl definitely try and get along to the RR on 23rd and say hello.

regards, Phil

Hi Brett, Phil, all,

Interested in this one as I have looked with some seriousness at supercharging 944(as below), but the U>S> kits are some $6000. + tax. So can the NOS kit in its basic format be turned off and on simply?, leaving the car running normally in the "off" position, if of course standard items like the plugs wer n`t modded.
I`ld have liked to come up on dynoday as well Phil, but already got work commitments. Will follow this thread and if there are any comments on 944 applications...

Hi Keith :)

Yes I know about supercharger costs...I went into them for my 928....the killer for me was the £700 import duty and VAT... :(

Yes Nitrous can literally be turned on and off at the flick of a switch...and you dont have to alter plugs like I do...thats only for BIG Nitrous jets.....for under 100 Horsepower jets...you can just run normal plugs....

And all for under £1000 :)

Its truly amazing stuff.....I honestly laugh evey time I hit the switch :) :) :)

Anytime you see me...(I do a lot of events..PCGB and dyno days etc) I will happily give you a ride :)...Same applies to anyone reading this........

All the best Brett :)

Thanks Brett, yes I looked at 100i manufacturers website and all looks good. Where do you mount the cylinder, I have no boot and the implication is that NOxide is not good to keep in the cabin. What about engine outlet valves, the site implied, unless I misread it that the ports might need enlarging, and the exhaust valve timing might not work? Did I miss this bit in an earlier post?

Hi Keith :)

You dont need ANY engine alterations at all :)

Nos in cabin is fine...its only an Oxidiser...its NOT explosive and its NOT flammable :)

Normally on a 4 cylinder engine the Crossfire jet is fitted between air intake and plenum chamber...in the rubber neck....if you post an engine piccy here...I will tell you where I would put it..But the Wizards of Nos site will give more accurate advice... :)

Here is their Forum link...http://www.noswizard.com/bboard/

All the best Brett :)

Hi All :)

Picture update...My "home grown" plugs for Nitrous...

NGK BP7ES...one grade colder than normal BP6ES

Side electrode ground off to stop it becoming a glow plug and burning a hole in pistons... lol

Side ground at 45 degrees to improve flame front...

Second picture in next post..........

All the best Brett :)
