Non-Start - Again

ORIGINAL: Bow Runner

Right a DME bypass and fuel pressure test later I think I've identified the problem. No fuel pressure whatsoever. It's either a duff fuel pump or some failure in power to the fuel pump.

with the 3 wire bypass fitted you should hear the fuel pump pumping ctinuously loud and clear.
If you cannot hear it then check the fuel pump fuse has 12v+ on it. If it has check you have 12v+ at the fuel pump terminal. You could run a bypass 12v+ feed to the pump from the battery if you need to.

If it is still not running then check the pump is earthed or run a tempoary earth strap to the fuel pump body from the car chassis or better still the battery negative terminal.(I use the black jump lead for earth bypasses)
If it still doesn't run the pump is jammed , the fuel tank filter or outlet is blocked or the pump is fubar.!

If the pump is working and you have no pressure there is a non-return valve in the fuel pump which could be sticking open or the FPR valve is faulty

I would add to peanuts comments to check the voltage at the pump with the pump connected. I have seen plenty of 924/944 fuel pump problems where one or other electrical contact was corroded, and only delivery about 6v at the pump with the load from the pump in the circuit, but the low resistance of a multi-meter would read 12v in the circuit without the pump. (If you have this scenario, it is a dodgy connection somewhere, assuming the pump runs with the wire straight from the battery as Peanut suggested.)

Well 12v from the battery to the DME and 12v from the ignition to the DME. No noise from the fuel pump with a bypass. Couldn't check the power to the pump as the screws holding the cover were far too rusted and I didn't want to strip them.

Off to the garage it will have to go.

I reckon I will get the in tank filter, fuel pump, fuel filter and FPR all changed at the same time. Pop goes the bodywork improvements for this year but better to have a running car.

did you check to see if you had 12v+ at the fuel pump fuse holder in the fuse relay box with the 3xwire bypass fitted ? ???

I think its fuse 34 from memory. Just push a paperclip or spade connector into the fuse holder socket

If there is no voltage at both sides of the fuel pump fuse the new pump won't work either [:D]

It lives again. Kaput fuel pump. Replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter and in tank filter at the same time. The fuel pump was some generic version and the fuel filter looked ancient. The in tank filter was not clogged but looked a bit tarred.

Good stuff. What a relief. I assume you'll be taking it for a good airing this weekend then [:)]

Cheers
