Number plates & Road Angel

Okay, i' m going to start another thread collecting names of those interested in purchasing a Road Angel + Laser Alert (as this thread has been hijacked!). Once several people have expressed an interest I will ring around a few companies to try and get a deal.

I would suggest that we need a minimum of 10 people to get any appreciable discount.

Taz

don' t know if it' s worth linking up with the company who are demonstrating next week - see earlier item same thread, as they' ve promised a discount

So if the road angel is not a radar detector, then it is no good for telling you which cameras are NOT armed that particular day. One of the pleasures of the old radar detector I find

What with the mobile phone charger - I reckon cars need 3 cigarette lighters these days - and that's for non-smokers!

Pat

Hello peeps,
I run the Radar Detector Shop (and DT Concours) and I use a Road Angel in my 968 and it is one of the best, especially if you want to move it from car to car as I do, just let me know when you have the best pricing, I'll do what I can with regard to discount as long as I can still feed the children [;)]

Hi Pat,
just a note on your comment about needing to know if the speed trap is active, answer this honestly, if you have a radar detector that doesn't go off when there is a Gatso ahead that you have seen, would you slow down to the speed limit or would you carry on at the same speed. (Presuming you are over the speed limit of course.)

In the phone calls I get, people often say that a radar detector is better because it will tell you if the trap is active. I wouldn't take the chance, I am still going to slow down, so I would rather have a very reliable device that carries a database of the locations than a device that relies heavily on a strong signal coming from the speedtrap to give me enough warning (if any).

Hi K3000,

There is a real pleasure driving around the M25 knowing which Gantries have a live camera in them and those that don't.

It is plainly obvious which ones are armed and which ones are totally benign.

Even in rural locations it is plain to note which camera's are live and which camera's are not.

Do I slow down? On the M25 in the outside lane, I am driving in a stream of speeding motorists and only I know when to jam my foot on the brakes!

Or when there are roadworks, and there are reputedly speed cameras, I know if there really are and when it is necessary to slow down.

When you have owned a radar detector you know it works and therefore have great confidence in it. I agree however that it does affect you driving for the better overall.

Pat

I have to agree with K300. I live in the city and the real radar detectors give off too many false alarms. I have many friends with both GPS-based detectors and radar detectors. Those with true radar detectors end up muting them in London due to the high number of false alerts.

Pat, you are right in that knowing which cameras are armed is beneficial but i'd rather know about every camera. The general consensus seems to be that true radar detectors are better in less-populated areas but the GPS-based systems are favoured in heavily populated areas. Several online stores i've spoken to back this up.

A compromise (to a degree) is the Snooper S6-R but this is still not quite the same as the Road Angel. It is a radar and laser detector.

Then there's the issue of convenience and minimal disruption to the vehicle itself.

I wonder if there is a combination device that does laser, GPS and radar in a self-contained unit that is highly portable and doesn't require any form of permanent fixing to the vehicle? Or am I asking too much?!

Taz

unfortunately not, depending on a few variables the best compromise is a Road Angel and a reasonably priced radar detector that can both sit on the dash, and so be moved easily.

I bought one a few days ago & so far it has spotted all cameras correctly & pointed out a number of blackspots that I was not aware off. A very useful feature that is not pushed in the advertising is the GPS output from the serial port. I plugged it into Autoroute 2001 & now have a little car driving along the map showing exactly where I am. Very useful when looking for a badly signed junctions etc. The always visible & accurate speed readout also allows you to keep an eye on the speed at the same time as the road, much safer than having to look down to read an inaccurate speedo.

See my post on the other Road Angel thread. Best price i've got so far for PCGB members is 345GBP for the Road Angel. Uplands is the company and they can do the Snooper S6-R Neo for a good discount as well. The only sting is the P&P at around 7 quid but they do deliver next day.

Taz

I'm interested in using the mapping data output of Road Angel (for use with AutoRoute). How did you 'plug it in'? Do you mean into a laptop running AutoRoute or a PDA?

Cheers,

Taz

I have been away on holiday for a couple of weeks and my original thread has grown a little in length and complexity. Have lost the ..... thread... of it a bit (?!)..... is anyone going for bulk purchase of Road angel and if so how much ?
