Paul, When you say they must have a BS stamp (British standard presumably?) the old ones probably don't so is it just that they would look new so therefore must be new or is it just the new style of plate that needs it?
I've no idea. As I understand it, it's illegal to have number plates that don't have the BS stamp on them. I'd guess that there'd be no argument if they were obviously original plates and you'd not drawn attention to yourself. Having a set of plates with background printing, odd fonts, non-standard spacing, company logos etc. will lead to problems.
Only for newly manufactured (2001 onwards) parts. Original plates are perfectly legal: the only retrospective legislation was to outlaw silly unreadable fonts, which had also remained legal on original plates after the 2001 change. Personally, for a 1990 car, Id have old style (legal then) plates made, because who can argue that they arent original? Id ensure that I had a correct large rear plate too, as opposed to the smaller conventional sized one. There isnt a legal plate size, as Im sure everyone knows - the law only stipulates character font, font size, spacing & minimum borders and legal plate sizing is a result of this. A maximum size isnt stipulated. Simon

Just to play devils advocate I bought a set of pressed ones from germany, car was on a NI (its orginal plate as it happens car was from NI) I had them made up with the correct GB blue strip with euro stars, that car went through an MOT with them and I even got done for speeding with them on by a mobile camera unit [] lol (Driver awareness course to do on the 27th [&:] No mention on either occasion. Now my brother-in-law bought plates form the same place but asked for D on the blue strip, been pulled twice because of it, will depend on the plod or tester who see's it though

ORIGINAL: sc0tty There's even a guy at my office who plates is T 12 1NCH !!! what a complete dickhead.
Well, I'd say that depends upon where those 12 inches are attached ... [] Oli.

A bit late now, but I had an adhesive front number plate made up for the 951 which is now on the Badge panel in a 924 Carrera GT fashion - not to be chavy but just to ensure max air flow to the Rad and intercooler. BTW - it cost £5 on ebay and has no markings other than the GB sticker at the LH side. I had a new 'standard' rear number plate made up and this made the car look so much smarter at the rear

I'm so tempted to order a set the same as I had before, but with a standard reg on this car just don't think it'll have the same effect

Just thought I'd put in a recommendation for dealerplates.co.uk - just got mine today with original dealer logos - they look great and they're BS marked too. For £25/pair delivered I'm impressed.

When i had the Turbo I got plates from fancyplates.com the front was made the same height as the central bar they attach to, never got any grief from plod or MOT testers for an undersize plate.

ORIGINAL: zcacogp Is it that numberplates on cars need to comply with those rules, or that any new numberplates made have to comply with those rules? I think it's the latter.
That's my reading of the law too (makes sense, there'd be an outcry if we were all forced to change them). To have any chance of prosecution they'd have to prove that you bought the plates since the ruling change, and I suspect/hope the police have better things to do. I have not had a problem with the number plates on my cars going through an MOT and neither car has current spec reg plates as I think they spoil the look of a classic car (the white car even has a vinyl front one and that passes). What I think is a little more worrying is the French police attitude to number plates [link=http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=48&t=860302]as reported on PH[/link].

Anyone used dealerplates.co.uk recently. They've not responded to my enquiry. I want original pre 2001 'Charles Wright' font in solid black. Currently I can only find one supplier with the font but in 3D style. I am re painting my 924 turbo and want new original plates. I have them currently but must be 20 years old and a little tired. Although no BS number as currently required has passed all its recent MOT's without issue. Any ideas??

I used Neil back in June and am very pleased with the results. Email was neil@fryer.co.uk. Not sure if this is the one on the website.
