Odometer gear

The gear in my odometer (the one driven by the worm on the motor) has disintegrated. It's so bad that I'm not sure how many teeth it had. The most common for sale appears to be the 20/21 tooth gear. Is this likely to be correct for my early Oval dash? Am I going to have to order from the 'states or is there a UK supplier nowadays?

Thx.

The is a place in Germany or Austria I think Michael [link=http://www.plastikzahnrader.com/english.html]Speedo gears[/link] Click gears on the right then change the category to Porsche

Thanks, yeah, looked on there, but I don't know exactly what gear I have because it's fallen to bits, I was wondering if anyone here had done theirs and could remember what gear they used.

This is a tough one. Take care looking in the US for a gear as most will be MPH speedos - not KPH. I found this Porsche reference on the Pelican Parts website that includes euro speedos (KPH) as well as MPH for North America. I appreciate this doesn't solve your problem but it seems to rule out the 20/21 tooth examples if you have a KPH speedo. http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/images/electrical/odogears.htm

And, amusingly, KPH is nothing more than a printed scale underneath the principal MPH graduations. Bruce, you do realise that we are the people who INVENTED imperial measurement, don't you? Feet, inches, gallons (proper gallons), ounces, pounds, miles... that was all us.

Errr...no. The Egyptians are thought to be responsible for feet and inches, the mile was from the Romans,

Received my replacement gear, came from Porschefarm in Italy. The German site in Waylander's link doesn't list the 20/21 gear for the 944 presumably because Euro models are in KM, although they do list it for USA 928s. Went for the 20/21 tooth version that the yanks have in theirs. Dismantling the cluster and removing the speedo head is pretty straightforward, then the speedo splits into 2 halves, speedometer and odometer. You can see the offending gear, brown in colour, which has disintegrated here.

Fitting the replacement wasn't as fiddly as I thought, the 2 adjacent gears have to come out first, though..

Speedo reassembled. The whole thing turns over by hand nicely with the new gear meshing with the others correctly so it looks like I have the right one

Will get it back in the car tomorrow.

Nice work. Trust you managed to zero the speedo reading while it was in bits! [;)] Think I read somewhere that you should zero the trip counter while the car is stationary to avoid damage?

That's been the standard advice since before I even looked at a 944 10 or more years ago. Theory is that re-setting the trip meter whilst the parts are moving puts more stress on them? Makes sense, and there's no real reason to push that button on the move.

yes its true. i ruined my trip function years ago when resetting whilst the car was just rolling [:(]

Just to close this. Refitted to car, works fine and with the added bonus that the voltmeter (previously pegged on 16v) works properly now that I have cleaned the connections to the cluster. Happy days.
