Hello,

Just wondering if there was a 944 long termer or two on here with experience with these old Audis.

I feel quite enthusiastic about the 5 cyl engine which is virtually indestructible and has a strong modification potential along with a great soundtrack.
The Quattro 4WD system is said to be very efficient and apparently quite reliable, and as the roads over here can get quite ugly in Winter I quite warm to the idea of 4WD.
The only Audi I have ever driven was a '95 A4 V6 and it felt quite dull on wallowing suspension and with a dead-ish steering feel. Are all Audis like that?

Any thought?

One of my mates ran an Audi coupe s2 for a few years it was a nice quick neat handling car.

Ran an old 80 Quattro with the N/A 5 cylinder. Had done 158,000 when i bought it, ran it for 3 years and sold it with 189, 000 miles on clock, all i ever did was replace a rear brake calliper (handbrake issue they all have, the activating pin wears down and you cant get a handbrake) and part of the exhaust system. possibly the cheapest car i ever ran.

As you say steering bit dead but almost any car i have ever driven has poor steering feel compared to a 944

I had a 91 Audi S4 as my daily driver a number of years ago - same engine as the S2 and the last of the 'Ur'quattros. It was a great car, although definitely in the Audi mould of 'not really thrilling'. To me though, I'll take dull any day for the daily commute! Given the safety and security of four wheel drive, the (almost) unbeatable noise of the 5 cylinder and a lovely wave of torque, it was superb. I worked as weekend boy at an Audi dealership from 93-2007, have driven nearly every model of Audi, and have owned around 25 of them. I recently bought another 90 for the 'collection' (if 4 cars could be a collection) as the 5 cylinder engine note is every bit as infectious as a flat six! Consider it recommended!

I have an Audi RS2 Avant itch I need to scratch!! Looked at them a year ago and went the sensible route of buying a BMW 520d touring due to 35,000 miles per year. Now I need more power!!

Steven, what's the fuel consumption like on the 90?

I've been salivating over a pristine Pearlwhite 90 Quattro with the 170hp 2.3 5 cyl...

So has every sensible petrolhead ever born! Buy now, the prices will only go one way from now on ...

(I have heard that they are pretty unexciting to drive. Not sure whether this is true or not.)

Was that one of the odd S4/S6 Audi 100?

A friend had an estate one for a while, I drove it a few times. Went well but had a big bus wheel and bad breaks.

Yes, it was one of the originals based on the old Audi 100 of the time, flared front wheel arches and the 'Avus' alloys. Mine was one of several Audis that I've had in Magnolia Mother of Pearl - still one of my favourite colours. It even makes a Ford Ka look good. Ok, maybe not. I also owned a very late 90 20V for while which was utterly great. It was a non Quattro and such an excellent understated 'sleeper' on the 15" Aero alloys. My dad had an A4 2.8 Quattro at the same time and it had no bother keeping pace!

The RS2 is a pretty awesome drive, albeit in a very no boost/lots of boost sort of way. Very muted 5 cylinder thraap, however.

As far as fuel consumption on the 90 goes, I have to admit I have no idea. I've driven it something like 10 miles since I bought it in November. It's been in storage with the others since then, so roll on the better weather!

As SUSIT above, I ran an 80 Quattro 2144cc n/a around 1987, it was an '84 car.

They were lovely well engineered cars but dynamically flawed like a 911, the heavy engine cut the tripe out of the front tyre shoulders and suspension bushes, but with the right technique, trailing throttle turn in and power thru the curve they could be made go round corners. Wet roundabouts were their chosen specialised subject - totally incredible for the era.
Windy motorways, they were like a ......Euro Fighter I imagine...... in cross-winds.

The swb Quattro Sport was created for Group B to create 205T16 turn-in standards and overcome the understeery nature of the original Quattro

The A4 marked the start of a journey towards todays bling Audis. I've had loads of them, still have one - but I don't like them any more. Actually Skoda are almost where Audi were in the early 80's. Simple, low key, well made, free from

Recommended, yes if you like character & quality

I've known, or driven, a lot of Audis over the years, from a D-reg 80 to a V8 RS4. To me, they've all been incredibly well-built cars, with great interiors, but let down by not being set up for UK roads.

The diesels are nose-heavy, the S-lines are really nasty over potholes, and ever one I've driven has had poor steering and ride. I've never really understood why you'd choose one for driving pleasure over a BM, or for comfort over a Merc (or even a Lexus). They seem to sit in a place somewhere in the middle, yet failing to be one or the other? A friend has just bought an A3 with the s-line pack and is in physiotherapy. It's tooth-shakingly harsh, for what purpose?

The '05 RS4 was the biggest disappointment. I listened to it start up every morning for two years on next-door's drive in awe, but when I had a few hundred miles drive of it it was compromised so much by the ride that it was almost American in it's inablility to get power down in corners as it was skipping around on every slight bump or cat's eye! I'd prefer a wallowy old US muscle car, that was at least comfortable whilst slow....

What I've never tried is an old Quattro. They seem the perfect car for me; '80's image, not stupidly fast, 4WD to keep me out of a hedge, and a practical 4-seater with a boot. Would a Quattro be a step up from a 944, or would I be comparing it to our Legacy all the time, and finding it wanting? [8|]

I tink if you went from a 944 say a Turbo or an S2 then you would be very disappointed in an Audi coupe Quattro or an S2 . The only reason you would change would be to get bigger back seats.

Well here we go, had a Audi S4 Avant 1999 (Twin Turbo V6 Quattro) the best built car i have ever owned and i have owned a 100 + cars, had it re mapped by MRC (These people are the best in the UK for Audi) it went like stink........the brakes from the factory were basically VW Passatt items and were woefully inadequate even when the egnine was in standard tune (270 BHP) Who would release a vehicle out on the roads with this much grunt and inadequate brakes ?
My old Mam (75) has a Audi S3 again Quattro with 220 BHP again shitty brakes but they cope due to car weight, again very well built and handles like a go kart.
The basics of car performance are Brake,Suspension then Power, something which Porsche understand and Audi do not !!
I know of a mint Audi 90 saloon with the 5 cylinder engine with a total resto ( the guy has contacts in Audi DE) for sale and at not silly money.
The UR Quattros are awesome but never never call a 994T laggy after driving one of these, but the sound is better than a "screamer" when doing the Huba Huba with a lady [:D]
My old BMW 7 series is better technically then most Audis, big brakes and suspension to suit along with mega build quality...............doing a 440 mile trip in the flying sofa tomorrow [:D]

Surely a 5cyl 80 is, in fact, a 90?

Simon, no - its not, the 90 came after the original 80 quattro (B2) series. If you google that, you will see what I mean. They were a 1984/85 model year only - then the 90 arrived. A 90 is a big bumper 80. The press launch cars were a reddish metallic as was my own[8|]. They were a rare car, no-one knew about them as they looked like an Audi 80. A real Q car - no pun and all that.

Have to agree the brakes were not up to heavy repeated use, but in the day, all cars except Porsche had poor brakes.

My nephew has a 1990 20v quattro 90(I think?) (non turbo) not driven it but sounds nice, engine is actually broken currently (low oil issue) but supposed to be very strong.

I have a late 2005 a6 3.0 tdi s-line, it can be harsh but on the right road it handles like a 2 ton estate car has no right to, its swift enough for a works van and so far I have avoided taking it to MRC!

Ok, so the handling is not what they're best at. I definitely wouldn't want one a replacement toy for the 944 though, they are far too different cars, and the idea is more to replace the old daily Clio with something actually comfortable that doesn't scream above 60mph, than reduce the 944 budget and go wild modifying something else.

Anyway, doesn't this one look nice? At this price he will probably keep it for quite some time though!

And not forgetting the 80 2.3E 5 cylinder for one model year only(1993)!

They use a drop of Oil Tony, always did even when new so I'm not totally surprised.....

I agree - my A6 estate 2.0tdi S line steers well for a 2 tonne lump, but 140 horses requires serious patience, it can overtake but bicycles only. I got it due to kids outgrowing Golf then A4 and knees in the back of my seat. You have the right one, V6 & Q

Very nice TTM, the rear spoiler is actually hollow Aluminium - and the key for the boot is in the taillight as they could not bring themselves to put it in the gorgeous body work[:)]
