Contrary to what Mr. Hartley had to say back in 2010, it's actually due to crankcase emission control. Closed crankcase ventilation was introduced quite sometime ago and dipsticks had then to be abandoned since they were a potential source of leakage.

I'm not sure that's absolutely true Clive. My '07 Golf GTi, which I'm sure has a closed crankcase ventilation system, does have a dip-stick - but it's fitted with an O-ring seal.

Anything's possible but I suppose Porsche has just chosen to take the sensor route. For the mid-engined cars it would be a little bit more challenging to make the dip-stick accessible compared with those cars where the engine is on show, but then I think earlier Boxsters had this facility.
