Oil Filters

Chaps,

A quickie. What sort of Oil Filters do you use in your 944?

The reason I ask is that I have ordered a bunch of oil filters from Euro Car Parts (thanks to the 20% off thread on here), and there are a variety of different types available, with (to my great surprise), Bosch filters the cheapest - cheaper than "OE Quality" filters.

Are Bosch not OE quality? Do Bosch filters not work as well? Or are they somehow different? (I know that in the world of VW's, cheap oil filters didn't have oil pressure release valves and were meant to be avoided, but Bosch filters were the good-qaulity ones with the all-important valves!)

Can anyone shed any light?

K&N oil filter. Advertised at a good price so I plumped for it. I would have thought Bosch would be perfectly acceptable and OE quality but perhaps someone more informed will be along in a minute.

I get MAHLE filters from my local motor, which I believe where actually OE or at least for the oil filter anyway.

Last few I got a deal from Exeter for genuine, still got one left. Not sure if Mahle ones have anything to do with the gen ones anymore. ISTR the gen one says made in the USA on it and Mahle germany?

On a slightly related topic, is there a nack for getting these off and out without making a god damn hideous mess? Did mine for the first time before Christmas and oil went all over the shop. I had wedged some rags all round the area but it still made a mess.

I got a genuine part as part of a service kit, Oil Filter, Air Filter, Plugs and sump plug washer for £42 inc VAT all Porsche parts. I don't know if this was a good deal or not. The world was covered in snow at the time and this was easy to get my hands on.

Chaps,

Thanks for your answers.

Mark - that sounds quite expensive for a service kit (sorry to say). Oil filter about £5.50p (Bosch, as mentioned above), plugs about £1.20p each, so £5 or so all in, sump plug washer about 20p, air filter I don't know as I have a K&N reusable one, but can't be more than about £15 at the most. So about £15 cheaper than the kit you mention ...

some advise punching a hole in the top. i found it didnt make much difference. i left it for about 1/2 hr and used a rag round the bottom still got about an eggcupful of oil released when i took it off. its an odd design; the BWM and VW i've owned both used cartridge filters at the top of the engine which drain properly and any other car with a screw-on filter has been mounted underneath the engine.

Thanks for the news about oil filter messes. I understand the Mahle and other OE style filters have a "check valve" type system that is supposed to keep oil in the filter when the engine is off to act as a sort of primer for the oil system. That way on startup there is oil available immediately and the engine doesn't have to fill the filter before oil pressure builds up.

I was hoping this check valve would mean no mess on changing (haven't done one myself yet) but I guess an egg cup full is FAR less than a filter full.

In North America (web sites) it seems the Bosch filters are cheapest - less than $6 CDN, Mahle can be had for less than $8 CDN and K&N seem to be about $15CDN.

My local factor does Mann ones which have always been fine on the 3 or 4 cars I've fitted them to. A couple of tricks I've learnt to make it slightly easier to change them. A get a cap tool that fits on the end, I think it shares with a Mercedes one & takes a 3/8th drive extension. The other one is to pop the lights up as it moves the linkage out the way & gives a bit more room to get the filter out.Oh & always protect the badge panel as it is very easy to scratch it if you drop the filter!

Well having not changed one yet I was going to go for a Mahle same as the air filter, but i'm probably goingt to go with a K&N just because the have a socket nut on the top which will make changing it next time a whole lot easier!!

It is not worth wasting a moment of your life considering which oil filter to get. There is not a huge price difference and they all work the same. Just get the one that is most convenient. Life is too short.

Thanks. I was just wondering whether to lament the fact that I bought the Bosch ones, as they don't have the check valve ...

... but then I found an empty bottle of beer in front of me and lamented that instead!

[:(] Next time I will put more effort into it. The plugs and oil filter did come in nice Porsche boxes though.

Now that is a much more useful way to spend your time!

Gotta love Porsceh boxes, years ago I bought a replacement middle vent for the 924 which came in an original 80's box NOS.

Although I did throw it out this year lol

Well I went for the K&N off ebay £11.04 inc p&p, simply because of the nut on the top which will making changing it a hell of a lot easier given the position of the oil filter on a 44

The genuine OE part is black with Porsche printed on it. I can't imagine Porsche would allow ECP (or anyone else) to sell those unless they paid a license fee to Porsche, which would wipe out any saving. Though it is probably the same part without the Porsche logo on it. Either way there is no such thing as branded oil filters. They will be made by two or three manufacturers and all the well known brands will buy from them and paint their logo's on the side. It makes no sense for them to invest in a production line for all the hundreds of oil filters they need to produce to satisfy the whole aftermarket - too much of a narrow slice of a shrinking low-margin market considering manufacturing and distribution costs. They will buy from one of a small number of manufacturers who make the bulk of the quantity to supply the world and therefore get economies of scale. Well known filter manufacturers will concentrate on making filters for new and current cars, and specialist applications, where they have a contract to supply with a manufacturer.

I remember buying a service kit from Porsche for about £50 which included an oil filter, sump plug washer, fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs. I struggle to get all that from Halfords for my Focus in their own branded stuff for that price.

ECP sell the Genuine Porsche oil filters under their part "OE Quality". that goes for all Genuine Porsche parts they sell

I use 964 Turbo filter. It's a little bit taller, otherwise similar than 951 one. More cleaning capacity and also easier to remove.

I'm sure ECP buy thousands at a time and get a good discount from Porsche uk.. They also pass on a little discount to us undercutting Porsche retail price..
