Oil loss - extended warranty cover?

Well I Guess that I'm about to find out whether the "investment" I've made in an extended warranty for the last two years is going to be worthwhile.

Came back from Silverstone on Sunday evening, parked on the drive only to find 5 minutes later that there was a river of oil running from underneath the car [:(].

Porsche Assistance have taken it to Tonbridge OPC and I await the outcome of their investigations - here's hoping that the extended warranty covers whatever the problem is....
 
Failed intermediate shaft bearing and the OPC is going to replace the engine. Extended warranty looks like very good value now!
 
I have always wondered as time went on if it was especially as it does not cover so many things like wheel bearings. However its nice to know the big stuff is covered if a problem does occur apprently with no argument from what you are saying above![;)]
 
this intermediate shaft bearing is terrifying me. I have a 2005 '05 car 987, made in April and it seems this group of cars is pretty feeble in this area. what do I need to do (if i can ) to stop this happening and what should I look out for as a warning? i wasn't going to bother renewing the warranty as it seemed fairly dear for a new car but this is really making me think twice.....and it annoys me as i bought the porsche instead of a ferrari because it is allegedly bullet proof......
 
I tell you what, even if you didn't have the warranty, it has to be pretty embarassing for Porsche to have an engine fail that is so new. Surely, they would always sort things out in these cases. Wouldn't look good in the paper.
 
fair point - is this something that is really a common issue though or is it a case that people have been particularly unlucky? i have never had to worry about anything like this with my other cars, normally one doesn't have to think about it.....is there a patch of oil that's a give away? Physci - was it a case of sudden death or did you notice anything odd before hand? thanks
 
No indications prior to Sunday. The "check engine" Emission control warning light came on a few miles from home and was going to call OPC on Monday to have it checked out but the river of oil beat me to it. Car has only done 21k miles and as not yet 4 years old was ready for a row with OPC until they told me covered under the warranty.

London987 - have to say I nearly did not renew the warranty last year as thought was expensive and had to chase OPC to have renewed as they did not write to offer renewal. Very glad I made the effort now.
 
This is the third IMS failure i have seen reported on 2004 or later cars in the last 3 months. Bear in mind the number of cars they sold in the UK in the 4 year period and its not a huge amount of failures, but worrying nonetheless !

You'll be back on the road next week with a reconditioned engine (complete with improved bearing) in place.

My warranty renewal is due new month - no brainer for me, even if i have only covered 3k miles in the last 11 months

It amazes me that no one can get a statement out of Porsche on how they intend to remedy this problem . They seem keen on developing LED rear lights, fancy spoilers, Anniversary Boxsters....but the engines keep on blowing up. As a Porsche club , does anyone in the club or running it speak to Porsche on this ? It would be interesting to know if they are working on this ?

If you look at the new 997 Gen2 you will see what will happen to the Boxster engine next... and seems RMS, IMS, etc are all solved with the new Gen2 Boxer engines...

Its worse than i thought John - since 1 Aug last year 2520 miles - i did 1200 of them in one weekend.
 
I had a problem with 2nd gear baulking in my 2004/986 S back in January (at 25k mls) and Dick Lovett replaced the gearbox under warranty without any fuss. The only issue was whether to rebuild or replace. Not surprisingly, I'll be renewing at the end of the year. BB.

Any idea if now an engine goes pop - or incontinent - you'd end up with one of these engines? Or was the 986 to 987 change significant enough for the engines to be incompatible?

I've already told the dealer I'll be taking out the extended warranty on mine. The salesmen reckoned the RMS issue has been blown up out of proportion and that I shouldn't worry, but my feeling is that the car is already over four years old (five after the included warranty runs out) so I'd rather have the extended warranty for peace of mind.

which ones are gen 2? 987 3.2 or 3.4?

Neither - gen 2 engines will start in the facelifted Boxster/Cayman from early 2009.


As to what you'd get next year if you need a new engine under warranty ? - the same as this year, a reconned gen 1 engine. Gen 2 engines are DFI units, so fitting a gen 2 engine would require changing much more than just the engine.
 
I've just had the IMS fail on my 2003 S. Had a new engine fitted with Porsche making a significent contribution to the cost.
This is my first Porsche (fulfilling a boyhood dream). Made an effort to find a low mileage, full service history car. In the last year I have had the main seal replaced and then the IMS failure. I don't drive the car hard, so naively expected it to be bullet proof.
The OPC called this an "auxilary shaft". I have assumed this was the same thing - can anyone comfirm.
Despite all of the above it is still the best car I have ever driven and gives me a thrill every time I go out in it.,,
