Oil loss - extended warranty cover?

ORIGINAL: caws
Porsche making a significent contribution to the cost
You're saying this specifically because it wasn't under the Porsche warranty, I trust?

These failings are quite clearly a design fault and/or manufacturing fault, but they've obviously never considered it common enough for a recall. I guess peeing oil all over the road then wrecking the engine isn't in the same life-threatening ball park as something like faulty seatbelt anchors!

is the RMS something you can/should get replaced at regular intervals to guard against this issue or is it a case of you're lucky or unlucky....does it wear out? also what's IMS?
thanks

Thats correct. It did not have extended warranty but as it was a low mileage car with full service history they contributed.

Jamie,
Rear Main Seal (RMS) doesn't need to be replace on regular intervals... latest seals and tools (both equally important) fixes the problem for most 996/997/986/987s but yes, there are a unlucky few who have had to get them replaced several times... This will no longer be a problem with 997 Gen2, has never been a problem on Turbos, GT2, GT3s and we'll have to wait for 987 Gen2s for Posrche to put this down as part of history...

A couple of weeks ago I took a call from a very distressed female 2004 26000mile FSH Boxster S owner whose engine had "blown up". She had bought the car from a non Porsche outlet when it was just over three years old and the "warranty" she had only covered work up to £6000 including a strip down to confirm failure. She was being quoted approx £9500 to fix the problem.

I gave her the IMS saga well chronicled in this forum suggesting this was the probable cause and suggested engine replacement was the only option, also this was a well known fault which affected some Boxsters
On checking with her today she had contcted her local OPC with her tale of woe and they agreed to replace the engine and fund the difference if her seller's warranty coughed up the difference which they did.

She is a happier bunny although concerned and actually quite shocked that a car from a maker with a reputation for quality i.e. Porsche could have such a fault and even with my limited knowledge I could tell her that this fault is not that rare as we get to hear of most of these failures due to the catastophic results to engine and posibly wallet.

I would say that if you have your car regularly serviced with an OPC or others, don't have the Porsche extended warranty, and you suffer this failure make a stink at your OPC, bend their ears for a goodwill payment. Incidentally £9500 for a fitted replacement 2004 Boxster S engine does this sound right?
Regards.

Think you may find that a good percentage of the 9.5K will be labour costs now running at about £150 per hour in some places. Just forked out nearly £500 to replace a crankcase oil seal on my Boxter S and the seal cost under £20 add £40 for oil for the gearbox..... should have stuck in at school and become a prorsche mechanic oops sorry they are Technicians now [sm=spanner5.gif]

This is all a bit worrying. I joined the Club to find out more about the marque after reading the many internet reports on engine failures, which surprised me considering Porsche's reputation. I was thinking about buying a 2 year old 987 from the OPC network and hoped that all the fuss was associated with the older 986's. It seems I could be wrong.

How much is an extended dealer warranty? Warranty Direct quote about £1500. Are there other more cost effective sources?

You'll get 12 months warranty with (nearly?) all Porsches sold via the official dealer chain, and it can be extended for a further 12 months for £895, until the car is 9 years old or has done 125000 miles. You also have to renew it up to 8 weeks before the end of the previous warranty period. The warranty includes Porsche Assist (RAC with bells on).

The RMS/IMS issues (as rare as they may be) are precisely why I only considered buying from an OPC.
