Dare I mention ZDDP? quite a lot of info out there on that subject. Wow looking at numbers M1 10w60 is mega thick, I just put it the other car in absence of 15w50, probably be ok but I'll keep an eye on it. For the 964 most 20w50s seems closer to 15w50 and is actually listed in the owners manual. There are still some motorsport/race oils at 15w50, millers cfs in particular has all the good stuff but is 50 quid for 5 litres. As i mentioned Steve I get bike motul oils cheap so i used 300v 15w50 4t factory line last time. Just about due another change in the 964 so i may go with millers cfs or valvoline vr1 (which comes in 5w50 which i might try). I'm a little sus of w40 oils as i dont want provoke any oil leaks. But i guess if you have a tight engine maybe thats been rebuilt thats not a worry.
Having had a major service earlier this year, I have noticed a distinct change in the oil burble / gurgle as the 11.5 litres of oil is being circulated back and forth from the cooler. I appreciate that the oil has to circulate as part of the functionality of our air cooled engines. However is the volume of burble more/less apparent depending on oil (viscosity) and filter type used. I have a Mann oil filter fitted with Fuchs 5W-40 lube. (fully synthetic). 964 runs and pulls well, gets to temperature normally; thermostat opens then the oil temp gauge indicator drops just below the second mark. Pressure at idle 2.5/3bar and 5 when pulling. Just not noticed the extent of the burble being as loud as before, expecting it to quieten off as time goes on. You know how in-tune we are with our cars, you notice these slight changes. Wondered whether this is normal. Would appreciate your thoughts.ORIGINAL: Steve Brookes Well...I've just taken out the Mobil motorsport 10W-60 and put Fuchs Supersyn 5W-40 in. The engine is now back to where it was before the thicker oil went in. It's now eager and responsive again. Thank goodness this thread came up and the advice there in from Opie Oils. I wouldn't have thought in a million years that something as simple as the grade of oil could have an effect on the engine's performance.

Paul, I think it could be the Mann filter that is causing the gurgling. I'm sure I've read on Rennlist that non OE filters cause the noise. I always use Porsche original and have never had gurgling oil noises. Also, I believe the Mahle OC54 filter is the same as the Porsche one. p.s. the one time I thought I could hear gurgling, it turned out that I had knocked the headlight leveling switch to its max position. [] p.p.s. 2/3 bar pressure at hot idle is too much. It should be 1 to 1.5. If you've always had that pressure it probably means that you have an aftermarket sender and should think about changing it for an original (I tried three after market, all were rubbish. A Porsche original fixed the problem).

I read Paul's comment as that he is now getting gurgling all the time since the last service and that prior to that it wasn't a problem. Here's a Rennlist thread on the subject: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/964-forum/623563-constant-oil-gurgling-noise-cured.htmlORIGINAL: kevin Not quite Steve, I've always had genuine stuff in mine, and Shell Helix or similar oil, and for about a day or two after the service I always have gurgling, it maybe that after then I get used to it....... K
Thanks for the replies folks. First couple of years of having the 964 genuine Porsche filters were used, then a few Mahle with no issue. Then this last service the gurgle appeared more apparent, so as you do, lifted the engine lid for close analysis and noticed a Mann filter, which surprised me! To be honest I would much prefer to have had genuine Porsche or Mahle, however I have respect for my 'indy' and that's what was used. Took the 964 out for a run yesterday. On start up no gurgling for first 15 seconds or so, then it appeared, although I'm now not sure that it's as loud [&:], paranoia creeping in me thinks! Anyway goes for a drive keeping a close I on temp. It was cool first thing but sunny. After about 5 or 6miles temp indicator reached the second mark on gauge then dropped between the two, then gradually increased and then held its position. So upped the pace as you do once the thermostat has opened. [] So I think all is well, although I may change the filter for a Malhe or Porsche. I know Mahle manufacture for Porsche, however I had read on Rennlist that Porsche are now using Mann!! Steve I was so busy watching the temp yesterday I forgot to check the oil pressure at idle. I will do this and reconfirm my figures. Thanks again for your replies folks.
Update regarding the oil pressure. Checked it yesterday Steve, I can confirm that oil pressure when hot is 1.5 to 2 bar on tick over. I'll leave the filter for the time being, however I'll fit a genuine Porsche one next oil service. Had MOT yesterday and passed with no advisories!
That was my Rennlist thread that Steve has linked to. The genuine Porsche filter we took off was made in the USA, the Mahle filter was made in Germany. Gurgling with the Porsche, none with the Mahle OC54. Even the Americans don't seem to rate their own filters. Oil wasn't changed. Interesting that Alex cut them open and confirms what i'd thought. For me the original almost seemed and sounded restricted, while some say it's reassuring to hear i'm not convinced. Feel sure i've read some place that the Mahle was OE when new but can't seem to find it.
