ok time to speak up .and no lies now..SPEED verses cabin noise..

My CS does have underseal unlike Steves, although I doubt it makes much difference to cabin noise even on concrete road surfaces. With the higher rev limit than a regular 3.2 the car will do an indicated 135 in 4th (@ Goodwood) & it sounds bloody fantastic.

hi pete ...you mention that you did your own roof was this just he top cover or did you do the inside as well..where did you get the bit to do the job....and how much...

My sister made the inside to the pattern I gave her and I stuck it on (dead easy). I bought a recover kit (includes absolutely everything you need) for £70.00 from Southbound normally about £120.00 I think (but he owed me). Took a friend and I half a day to make a thoroughly professional job.

i know southbound he lives in my road...and his work shop is just out side winchester where i live ...and your right the kit is normaly 120....asked before...realy nice guy...

Just to make sure that you're spending time/money in the right area ,you could always temporarily affix a strip of "duck" tape or similar along the leading edge of the targa roof/top screen frame. This way any marked improvement on a test run would ensure whether or not you're barking up the right tree[8|].
I too have an 87 3.2 targa(tucked up in heated garage while it's wet and salty out) and plan on this approach myself as I too suffer excessive wind noise above 80mph. With the roof off once past the century mark a strange calm ensues and my main worry is being sucked out of the car by the venturi effect!!!!!

well i rried the duck tape and blow me what a differance i can hear the engine now...so this is what the coupe sounds like ....hmmm ....well i guess i might just leave it there for the winter.......even at lower speeds it seems better...any way have a fab xmas break ....

interesting....

as for the newer 993's.. so on the autobahn's

up to 110mph.. it is fairly 'normal' (?) and surprisingly quiet ! althoug still very noisy compared to say a new sports car... although as mine is also a Targa it is always going to be a bit more noisy !

beyond that it really depends on how much throttle I'm giving it, so up to 120mph it can be held in a fairly quiet cruising style.. although above 4000rpm on any (IIRC) 911 the engine does really kick in.. and it's very difficult to resist the temptation to to give the varioram a full run...

beyond that I've only really given it full power.... and the full noise.. but the last time I was there I got up to about a mere 236kph (on the digital speedo) before the noise of my "mrs" shouting at me was more than the road noise, so that made me slow down !

The front edge of my targa sticks up and causes loads of wind noise. What did you do with your problem?

Regards, David.

well david as i said i tried the tape just to see.{across the join over the roof and the wind screen ...and sadly it made a big differance...so i think when i get time it looks like a roof job...you can buy the kit from south bound in stockbridgr near winchester....its just under 150 ...i think... this should make a big differance making the roof much sotfer

Michael,

Sorry didnt see the later posts about wind noise, but glad you tried the tape test and has confirmed your problem.

As a suggestion, as you are going to visit Southbound for the kit anyway, I'm sure David, (I think) would assess your current roof for you, maybe it only needs to be professionally re-adjusted.

As a last note, because my roof had been previously recovered (before I bought the car)
and had been bodged....Southbound did a full back to metal rebuild & custom fit for me-
this included stripping out the doors and resetting the windows to close snuggly on the top side seals....total cost was £700.00 plus vat.

Having a nice cover is one thing, but once you have tampered with the original roof, a 'fitting' is essential, as you must take into account that the targa shell will have flexed no doubt over the years/miles!

Happy New Year to all!
